I switched the Hard Drive in my main desktop yesterday with another just so I could install something on it. Then, when I switched my other desktop hard drive back to it's original, it wouldn't detect it.
The power cables and all the connections are still good, because it still recognizes my other computers hard drive. I'm in deep trouble for screwing up the family PC, how can I fix it?
I have been trying to install Ubuntu on my main computer for some time. I think I have two problems: my hard drive and video card. I started with Ubuntu 9.04 but got nowhere. I am now trying Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit. I can at least use the live cd if I put the video on safe mode. Just in case you are wondering, I have tried other distros: Fedora, OpenSUSE, Slitaz, Wolvix, etc. Only Slitaz and Ubuntu 9.10 works on a live cd.

OS: Trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 32bit
Motherboard: ASUS M3A78
CPU: AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core
Video Card: Galaxy Geforce 9500 GT 1GB 128 bit DDR2 (Nvidia) Hard Drive: Hitachi 1 TB Sata Drive 3 Gb/sec 7200 RPM Ram: 4 GB (I think, its been awhile since I built this thing) DVD Burner: LG I think I have two problems: the Sata Hard Drive and the Video Card. When I go to install it, I can get to the install menu but from there all I get is a blank screen. I have tried to put the video in safe mode then install it but I get the same result: a blank screen.
How do I know if Ubuntu recognize the Hard Drive and Video Card? I tried the mount command to see what it sees but I didn't notice any Sata Drives. I was told that I may have to do something with the kernel so it will recognize my Hard Drive. How would I do that?
I have been working on this for awhile now. On a side note, does it matter which Sata Plug the hard drive is on? Right now I have it on the 1st one but I would like to move it to the second one because I want a dual boot system. And yes I know I can use the same hard drive but I would like to keep them separated and use a switch to pick which OS system to use.
While running on the Live Cd, Ubuntu seems to know about my video card and ask to install some drivers but then it asked to be rebooted and it came back up not recognizing anything; video card and hard drive that is. On the live cd I ran the following commands: lswh, lspci, mount, and df. I am not too sure if they will show if the hard drive and the video card are working since I did them on the Live CD. Also on the lspci command, I did this after Ubuntu loaded the driver for the card.

Recently I noticed my hard drive sounding like it was repeatedly clicking off and then immediately spinning back up. Obviously, this doesn't sound like it is very good for the hard drive, and may be the cause of my computer locking up the other night.
I believe the affected hard drive is a Seagate 1TB SATA drive I bought this past summer, which is connected to the on-board SATA controller (SiLabs, I think?). Here is the dmesg output from when the problem started occurring.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had an old Dell Precision 470 with 2 hard drives, a 250GB boot drive with Red Hat installed, and a 500GB hard drive with data on it. Both of these are SATA. The computer died and I have replaced it with a Dell T3500. I was hoping just to move the hard drives into this computer and let generic drivers take over until I make the necessary changes. Unfortunately, I get the following kernel panic message after POST:

Quick background: I've always had problems with Ubuntu on my external hard drive, but I think it's actually with grub in Gnome - any Gnome. I had Karmic installed until after grub upgraded and a bootloader error made it impossible to log in, so I went over to PCLOS KDE.
I've missed Ubuntu and really wanted Lucid, so I tried reinstalling it to the external. Same problem. I tried PCLOS Gnome, and, yep, same - though I could reinstall the KDE version no problem. Anyway, after umpteen attempts, which included formatting the external drive in Windows (which doesn't ever recognise the external in My Computer till I do), letting Ubuntu do the partitioning, doing the partitioning myself, I finally tried to install through Windows via Wubi - still to the external drive.
It failed, and now the drive is not recognised in the BIOS, Ubuntu, or Windows (I've now installed a dual Ubuntu-Windows boot on my internal). Have I stuffed up my external drive? Is there some way I can make it recognisable (changing BIOS settings???). Do I need to supply more information?
I have a Sony VAIO AR series, it contains two separate 120GB hard drives that were originally configured in a raid. They're called hd0, and hd1. I disabled the raid and partitioned hd1 in 3 ways, one medium sized partition for the operating system (ext4), one large partition for storage (ext4) and one small partition for Swap space. I then installed Ubuntu onto hd1 with help from UNetbootin. After installation went fine I loaded up Windows installer, created two NTFS partitions, one medium and one large, and installed Windows 7 of the medium sized partition. Now I can't figure out how to boot into the Ubuntu side on hd1. Needless to say, in Windows, hd1 is not visable at all. I can see my two NTFS partitions fine.
When booting up I go through two main screens. The first screen "Matrix Storage Manager Option ROM," lists the physical disks (0, and 1.) and gives me the option to enter configuration with [cntrl+i]. The second screen gives me a list of options to boot from, Yet they are all Windows options and many are redundant. The list includes "Enter Command Line," which when selected tells me "Boot failed! Press any key to enter command line." command line brings me to "grub>" I tried booting Ubuntu from this command line, but don't have much to work with here. If an old bios and mainboard is being used, such that it cannot handle the large size of HD, then is it useful to say use a live CD and from its initial menu (pressed a key), choose 'Boot From First Hard Disk'? Would this be similar in getting around a bios and disk size limitation I wonder - like - does the use of a live CD in this way avoid using the bios to point to the active partition??
The reason for asking is that a friend has a couple of quality old rack mounted server machines and wants to use Ubuntu having now fitted 80 GB empty drives. Live CD seems ok, and 11.04 install goes ok but on boot up grub comes back with an error.
I recall that early machines cannot see larger(?) HDs for booting purposes even though installs go ok in very large HDs. I wondered if a live CD to boot up temporarily - trouble shooting - would be worth trying for this reason, or am I way off?
start getting Linux up and running. Like a lot of people, I chose an older computer I could fuss with, a 500mhz 256meg ram machine, and decided to install Puppy on a spare 40meg hard drive I have, as my bios does not boot from usb...I think...
Anyway, I have found that my bios does not recognize the hard drive when formatted to ext2! I have taken the drive and formatted it back to ntfs, and my bios recognizes it, and then back again to ext2, and nope, it's not there, thus I am still booting puppy from the cd...sigh...
Is my bios so out of date that I'm just out of luck? Is there anyway to check this?
I have been running Ubuntu 9.04 for the past year. Tonight decided to upgrade to 9.10 thru update manager. Every thing regarding the install seemed fine until the request to restart the computer. I hit the restart and it will not boot up. Computer goes thru the normal restart screens.
Screen flashes with bios info--no hard drive detected, then proceeds to show booting from hd, then loads grub stage 1.5 (not grub 2)and screen goes blank.
I installed(actually i hope i did) CentOS 5.5.However i can see my HDD in Hard drive menu in bios but HDD doesn't shows in boot menu.

Now when i plug in fedora 15 OS the HHD is not mountable. And neither of them are being recognized by ubuntu. I have tried plugging them in together, and separately, still nothing. I'm getting pretty frustrated. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have on my old PC 2 HDDs. Both are recognized as ATA66 (DMA3) in the BIOS. During booting with TinyCoreLinux, one HDD is recognized with DMA3. But the other one (in this case the slave, which is on the same IDE flat harness for both HDDs, 80wires 40pins) is recognized as DMA2 (ATA33). Somebody know what should be done in order to have both with DMA3?

I'm having trouble getting Ubuntu installed on my desktop, I'm trying to get a dual boot going with Windows 7.
The Windows 7 install was fine and the OS is working with no problems at all. But when I try and install Ubuntu, the installer can't see any hard disks on the system. The first screen is OK where it checks for available disk space, but on the following screen there are no disks listed.
I can boot into the Live CD with no problems, and I can see the disk and create partitions with GParted, but when I go back into the install it can't see them. fdisk -l can see them as well code...
I tried using the all_generic_ide option as well because I saw that in another post but it didn't help. I'm not really sure where to go from here, I've looked in the BIOS and there's very few options relating to the HDD, and none of them seem relevant. There's no RAID configuration or anything weird like that.
The machine is an AMD 64 with a Gigabyte GA-K8N-SLI motherboard. The HDD is a 250GB SATA2. The disk seems fine, and I've verified the install DVD as well, it seems to be OK (I tried both the 32 and 64 bit installers).

It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.
Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIm using it in an attempt to backup all of the files off of my dead Windows xp Computer. Right now I am using the 9.10 live disk of Ubuntu and cannot get the program to recognize what kind of file system my internal hard drive is using. (A western digital 320 GB hard drive with partition 1 in NTFS and part2 in FAT32) I would like to be able to back up this drive onto my 1 TB Western Digital external hard drive that is also in ntfs.
Now here comes the wierd part, it won't read or recognize my interal and external hard drives that run those file systems but it will recognize and allow me to read, edit, and access all of the ntfs hard drives on my home network. I did some lurking and tried a tutorial for creating a mount point and on how to force mount a disk, but neither of my disks would show up in Places/Computer. So then I checked the /etc/fstab file and is says,

Which I think means that it says I have no hard drives installed or connected to the computer. Yet when I go into Disk Utility it tells me the disk is there and asks if I want to format the disk into ntfs...
I've set up a dual boot system with Debian and Windows 8, both installed on their own drive, with their own boot partition. I installed eveything in UEFI-Mode with fast- and secure boot turned off. Both installations are working, as I can access them by changing the boot priority in the Bios. What I cannot achieve is to let grub boot my windows installation.

As you can see, my linux install is on sda, my windows install on sdc (sdb beeing a data disk). This is the entry I made in the 40_custom file in etc/grub.d:

I think this should be fine, but if I choose the windows entry wehen grub is booting, it says: error: no such partition. It's my first debian installation, and I am stuck here. Not too much of Linux experience in general.
I installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my desktop a month ago before I left my apartment for winter break. It worked beautifully for the week I used it, but now the computer won't boot. I'm using the ubuntu live cd right now to type this. I can't install it over my last hdd because apparently both of my hdds aren't bootable. I unplugged the computer for the month I was gone and the BIOS date reset to 2004. I'm not sure if that affected anything, whether I need to replace the CMOS battery? The computer was built in 2004 so I'm thinking the battery might be old. Basically the computer functions on the live cd, just won't boot from either hdd.

And when I plug it in I can choose: the standard ubuntu kernel is the one on my external, and the original one is listed under other...
I'd like to be able to startup without external hard drive and make the ubuntu on my internal drve the standard.
I wanted to use an older computer again, so I tried to fire it up, but alas. I don't recall when the last time was that it was running, but I don't think it didn't run back then. I just had a new computer

[PROBLEM] What happens is this:
1. The computer starts up. No POST-beeps.
2. CPU is ok.
3. RAM is ok.
4. Disks are auto-detected and listed.
5. Then the computer halts. No message, no warning. I am not even able to hit control+alt+delete (I say this, cuz I noticed this. I am able to run and alter the BIOS in an earlier state of booting up, with the keyboard, obviously). It just completely hangs/locks.
[WHAT I HAVE TRIED SO FAR]
1. Removing all hardware but monitor, RAM, keyboard. - Result: comp stops doing stuff after checking RAM, without any message whatsoever.
2. Cleared the CMOS (with the jumper, also by removing the battery). - Result: no changes.
3. There are two pieces of RAM. I removed them all. Result: POST-beeps. I put one back: loaded till after disks. See above. Exchanged the RAM-piece with the other RAM-piece (so: still one piece of RAM): same thing.
My laptop is windows xp pro, I need to install ubuntu, so I kept Ubuntu CD into my lap and restart, again it shows windows xp, some body told "BIOS is not set to boot from CD or DVD drive".
