CentOS 5 :: How To Update A Dell BIOS

May 3, 2010

Im having trouble figuring out how I would update my BIOS on a Dell Dimension 8100
The newest BIOS i can find is here

[URL]

But these downloads are both .exe files The Dell is older and has a floppy drive, but the windows machine Im using does not.

Is there a way to make this as a cd on the Windows machine and boot into that on the Dell? any time Ive updated a bios it has been through Windows.

Jun 8, 2010

I installed REL 5.5 on this Dell laptop (originally win 7) and everything works ok except when i get to the login GUI the LCD brightness (or lack of) sets to it's lowest so i have to click the f5 button to brighten the screen. If I log out, the LCD resets to the dimmest setting (can hardly make out the login GUI) and again I have to click on f5. I believe I need to update the BIOS but I don't know how. The BIOS update I dound on-line if a xxx.exe file.

CentOS 5 :: Updating Bios But Only Have .exe To Update

Aug 27, 2011

You can use RHEL driver: [URL] use same kernel driver for CentOS as RHEL. I'm really new with Centos OS, can you guide me on how would I be able to update my software via RHEL Driver? I see alot of RPM and images.

Hardware :: Dell Precision T7400 Can't See 2TB Drive In BIOS

Oct 1, 2010

We have a RHEL5 box with a 2.6.18 kernel up and running (no RAID in use, but the SAS controller is enabled in the BIOS). To expand the storage, we bought a 2TB drive to add to the machine. Currently the setup is like this:

SATA-0 => DVD-rom
SATA-1 => DVD-rom
SATA-2 => empty
HD-0 => old hard disk
HD-1 => old hard disk
HD-2 => new 2TB drive
HD-3 => empty

The BIOS doesn't seem to have any way to list the drive on any of the HD ports, only the SATA ports, so I'm not sure if the drive is being recognized or not. fdisk -l doesn't seem to recognize the 2 TB drive.

I'm going to try reordering the drive ports and try the drive in another machine, but I'm baffled here...

Fedora Installation :: Dell Inspiron 530 Dead After Bios Upgrade?

Jun 8, 2009

I have a dell inspiron 530 desktop with core 2 quad and 4GB memory, running 32bit vista and 64 bit fedora 10. I searched on the web with "can I install 8GB memory on dell inspiron 530", and got couple of articles that says I only needed a bios upgrade.I downloaded bios version 1.0.18 from dell and run that in Windows to replace bios 1.0.12.After it said upgrade successful and asked me whether I wanted to reboot to have the new bios taking effect, and I said yes. And it shutdown the computer, and never came up Now, when power up, I see nothing, not even the "F2 to setup, F12 to boot menu" message, much less the grub selection. Is there a way to revive the computer?

Fedora Installation :: OT: Dell BIOS Always Boots Windows Harddisk?

Nov 14, 2010

I have a Dell Vostro with sda and sdb (the latter was installed by myself). I installed FC14 x86 64 onto sdb with /boot being on /dev/sdb8

I did not want to install grub onto /dev/sda as this is a shared machine. I thought that I would be able to use the BIOS's 'select boot device' to select the sdb disk and boot off that and get into FC that way.

fdisk verifies that /dev/sdb8 is marked as bootable and grub (via find /grub/stage1) confirms that it is installed on hd1,7 (ie /dev/sdb8)

However, no matter which hd is choosen as the boot device, Windows is always booted - I change the boot order to use: DVD, sdb, sda but it still boots Windows. It seems like the BIOS only wants to boot sda no matter what.

Ubuntu :: BIOS Update After Fitting New CPU?

Aug 8, 2010

I have inherited a Dell Inspiron 1300 with a 1.6 Ghz Celeron M and would like to fit a Pentium M 765 2.1 Ghz.

My questions are, will i need to update the BIOS after fitting it, or can i just plug and play?

If an update is not necessary, as such, will i see any kind of gains from doing so?

and if an update is necessary will i have to do it from a boot CD?

Also, as a side note, i plan to eventually boost the RAM and install a bigger HD, will a BIOS update be required after fitting either?

Ubuntu :: Can't Mount Filesystem After BIOS Update

Jan 17, 2010

I just flashed/updated my BIOS using the MSI LiveUpdate4 utility under Windows 7. Everything worked the way it was supposted to as far as I can tell. Except that I can no longer boot up under Ubuntu. Windows XP and Windows 7 both boot up fine.

I get the error message:

Quote:

Mount of filesystem failed
A maintenance shell will now be started
CONTROL+D will terminate this shell and continue
Give root password for maintenance

I never set a root password under Ubuntu so I can't do that. It also said after failing to accept my user/sudo password something about running Fsck manually. So I put in the Ubuntu installation CD and am running it live. It comes with Fsck but there are quite a few options and I don't want to choose the wrong one and end up loosing data.

General :: Unable To Properly Shut Down After Bios Update

Sep 6, 2010

I have a bit of a weird problem, I have updated the BIOS for my motherboard (MSI K9A2 Platinum V2) to version 1.B which updates the CPU AGESA code. After the update I was unable to properly shut down linux (gentoo linux 64 bit, kernel 2.6.34, kde 4.4), when I try to do a shut down (tried it from kde and from the command line as well with the same result) the computer shuts down but then it starts up again, only this time the keyboard doesn't work. I think that somehow, the way the pc shuts down has changed (maybe linux is sending the wrong commands in order to shut down) because from windows 7 I can shut down the pc properly.
I have tried to recompile the kernel (I thought that maybe I forgot to add support for some ACPI, APM or CPU options that could affect the shut down procedure) but with no luck.

General :: Create A Bootable Dos CDROM In Linux That Is Bigger Than 1.44MB For Bios Update

Sep 13, 2010

I need to install a bios update to fix my PC after I upgraded the CPU. BIOS update should fix it.

But...This seems to be way harder than it should be. I'd be great if motherboard manufacturers could provide bootable iso images with all the tools to do the job without us having the build these ourselves...

Anyway, how do I go about creating a freedos bootable CDR under Kubuntu that is BIGGER than 1.44 MB!

My image file is 1MB already. The flashing program 32KB. I tried the methods from the various forums and just couldn't get them to work. Either ran out of space, or all the links to fdos were broken.

By the way, [url] doesn't seem to be right anymore and thats where everyone is pointing. I would probably have had this sorted if I could have the 2.88 MB image, but all I can find is a 1.44MB image and I have now idea how you can grow that to a bigger one. Why be stuck with 1.44MB? are we still in the 1990's ?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Can't Mount Second BIOS-RAIDset

May 15, 2011

I've a problem to mount a second BIOS-RAIDset in CentOS 5.6. De computer is equipped with 5 SATA disk drives, 2x 1,5 TB (RAID1) in boot (working properly) 2x 2 TB (RAID1) for holding a VM for a NAS (must me mounted to /nas but it doesn't). 1x 750 GB (single disk) not assigned yet.

The 2x 2TB RAID oneset is assigned using a mapper: /dev/mapper/pdc_ccbjafbfd

De RAIDset is recognised by dmraid en is operational. I can see the partition (added with p1) with fdisk. But when I tried to mount the partition on the 2TB nas it says: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/pdc_ccbjafbfdp1 And when I try to use fsck it says: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/mapper/pdc_ccbjafbfd 36.Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?

I think there's another program active on the background.

Mounting-commands: [URL]
System-information: [URL]

The problem started at the first reboot after assiging and formatting the RAID-set.
