Ubuntu :: Install The New Memory To Dell T7400?

Apr 26, 2010

I met a weird problem when I try to install the new memory to my Dell T7400. The computer is installed ubuntu 9.10, 64 bit version and 8 G memory. I got extra 8 G memories, and installed them on the machine. But the problem is ubuntu does't recognize the new memories, but the BIOS does. I switched the position of the new memories with some old memories, but it turns out the old memories also can not be recognized by the system. I got some memory information by using cat /proc/meminfo

MemTotal: 2055440 kB
MemFree: 1019100 kB
Buffers: 105900 kB

Fedora Hardware :: SAS Driver Not Loading On F14 On Dell T7400?

Mar 1, 2011

I've been configuring a kickstart installation of Fedora 14, and everything was working fine on a slightly older Dell Precision 490. The machines we're actually going to use, are Dell Precision T7400, and when I tried on thoseit had some issues with the SAS controller, and is unable to see the hard drive in the machine. I get the following error (see attached dmesg output for more details):

Code:

Hardware :: Dell Precision T7400 Can't See 2TB Drive In BIOS

Oct 1, 2010

We have a RHEL5 box with a 2.6.18 kernel up and running (no RAID in use, but the SAS controller is enabled in the BIOS). To expand the storage, we bought a 2TB drive to add to the machine. Currently the setup is like this:

SATA-0 => DVD-rom
SATA-1 => DVD-rom
SATA-2 => empty
HD-0 => old hard disk
HD-1 => old hard disk
HD-2 => new 2TB drive
HD-3 => empty

The BIOS doesn't seem to have any way to list the drive on any of the HD ports, only the SATA ports, so I'm not sure if the drive is being recognized or not. fdisk -l doesn't seem to recognize the 2 TB drive.

I'm going to try reordering the drive ports and try the drive in another machine, but I'm baffled here...

OpenSUSE Install :: Windoze Driver From Dell's Site Dell Inspiron 5160?

May 24, 2010

This card has been the bane of my existence for a while. In the old days I could get it to work with Fedora using a generic video driver. A friend recommended OpenSuse because of my love for KDE.

The good news is that install went greeeeat. But after that, I once again got a black screen with a line randomly done it. Is there a way to change? I tried changing those resolution options but it didn't work. I have the Windoze driver from Dell's site. Its Dell Inspiron 5160.

OpenSUSE Install :: Virtual Memory / Resident Memory Of Server?

Feb 3, 2010

we found that if we use 'top' to show the memory usage of a server (SuSe Linux 10), we can get virtual memory usage as well as 'Resident memory' usage. For virtual mem or a particular process, it is around 1.1GB, which is large but for resident memory, it only consumes 300MB. Are there anyone who knows what the differences are? I would also like to know whether the difference (1.1GB - 300MB) = 800MB are actually available for use by other applications in the system.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Install 11.3 On Dell Precision M4500

Sep 27, 2010

When I run the openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-x86_64.iso from an usb stick and select "Installation" or "openSUSE Live (GNOME)" the screen goes to black after showing the load bar for a while.

This is most likely a graphics driver issue but I have no idea how to fix it.

This happens on a dell precision M4500. The same usb stick works fine on another machine.

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Install 11.2 At Dell Latitude XT

Dec 19, 2009

I can't install OpenSuse 11.2 on my Dell latitude XT notebook.

1. I tried DVD x86-64 install. The process seemed ok, but after installing Suse can't boot - with its any menu item. Booting seemed ok, there was no errors in screen lines, but when GUI seemed try to load (the screen became colored), all freezed. VGA menu item and other boot menu options did not save the situation. Repeat booting from DVD with Recovery option showed not mount or not correctly unmount fs (which couldn't be corrected by recovery program), some not fatal difficulties in the core and other minor and correctable errors. But after recovery process the picture was the same.
2. Then I tried net install. The same picture.
3. Installing to clean hd... The same. (Manual partitioning - the same too.)

I will not describe my numerous different attempts (and wast time spent for net downloading), so far as I thought that the matter was in my adjustments in the installing process, because other Linux distributive (such as Mandriva, Ubuntu etc. tried by me) were installed without the slightest problem at the Latitude XT.

4. Then I downloaded and installed 11.1 version of Suse. There was only some minor errors, and booting was normal. But there appeared some problems with downloading from repositories and I couldn't update it to 11.2; and installing 11.2 over 11.1 from DVD resulted to the same problems.
5. After I searched this forum, I've tried different installing options (noacpi and so on) at last.. But without any result and any change.

Hardware :: Why Dmesg / Grep Memory Gives Two Different Physical Memory Amounts

Oct 20, 2010

I am monitoring physical memory in a server I administer, and my hardware provider told me they had increased physical memory size to 4Gb... However, using several tools (free -m; top; dmesg | grep Memory; grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo I discovered that I actually have 3Gb, not 4... But, my doubt comes from the fact that dmesg | grem Memory tells me I have 3103396k/4194304k available The first number is effectively 3Gb, but the second one, is 4! so, why I am looking at this two different numbers?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dell Laptop Won't Install W 10.04

Jul 12, 2010

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 desktop and burned the CD. I changed the boot order on my Dell Inspiron 8100 to search for CD first. On startup, I see it flash - ISO LINUX something ............ The light flashes on my CD drive for a minute or so. I see a little icon at bottom of screen with a stick figure of a man and something else for a few seconds, then I see a white cloud flash on the screen that reduces in size and disappears, after another minute or so of the drive light flashing everything stops and still a black screen. Then, I tried hitting escape key a couple of times and I heard a few seconds of jungle music. The drive light flashes again for a while but nothing else happens. It seems like it's almost there, but not making it all the way for some reason.

By the way, if it matters, my Dell hard drive is partitioned to C: and D: I thought it would run a little faster that way, but not really noticable. I have most everything on C: right now. I hope to install side by side as I have a couple of applications I need Windows for, but would like to use Ubuntu for everything else. More questions about that later, on getting it to boot from the CD?

Since posting the above earlier under Dell, I have been able to boot from a borrowed 9.04 disk okay. And, was able to boot another computer with the 10.04 disk that I burned. The disk is apparently good, so why doesn't 10.04 work and 9.04 does?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Install 10.10 On Dell GX240

Oct 14, 2010

I've been trying for three days to install Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell GX240, with no luck. Each and every time, I boot from the Live CD and get as far as the language selection screen. I click "Forward," and the little gearwheel spins forever. Or until I power the machine down, whichever comes first. The BIOS is at its latest level (A05), and it's in original factory configuration -- I haven't made any modifications to it. I've also tried booting into "Try Ubuntu without installing," and running "Install Ubuntu" from within that environment, with the same non-results.

After a minute or so, the machine becomes completely unresponsive and I have to power down and start all over again. I've done a lot of prowling the web to find answers, most of which recommend adding "acpi=force" to the boot options. Unfortunately, that doesn't work for me. Nor have any of the various acpi/apic options. I don't think this is a hardware problem, since I am able to install and run XP on this machine without any problems whatever.

Specs for the machine are:
256M memory, at 133Mhz
CPU speed 1.7 GHz, Pentium 4
