Hardware :: Building New System Using CloneZilla Image

Dec 31, 2009

In 2010 I want to build a new linux box. I currently have a dual-boot system...
IDE1 = WinXP 200GB Master
IDE1 = Opensuse 11.0 Slave 80GB

I have cloned both drives with CloneZilla (CZ) and restored with it aswell. My 80GB is a Western Digital Caviar Model (WD800BB-00JKC0). The drive I'm thinking of buying is a WD Caviar SE (WD800AAJB) [URL]. Will my restore images work with this drive? Its a 80GB but the model numbers differ. Does it make a difference?

Ubuntu Security :: Clonezilla: Can't Save Image To Network Via Ssh

Dec 26, 2010

I'm working with Clonezilla to back up my test server, I want to store the image to a partition in our network, for example: my computer. But it still doesn't work. These are my steps:

I reboot my server with Clonezilla CD.
I choose device-image
I choose ssh_server
I choose my network device with dhcp mode
I provide the IP of my computer and port 22, then my username
I choose the path to my hard drive, like /home/username/backup

But after I type my password to connect, Clonezilla says "remote host has disconnected. Clonezilla image home directory /home/partimag is not a mountint point! Failed to mount other device as /home/partimag! Are you sure you want to continue?"

I try to connect to my computer from another machine, it works, but I don't know why Clonezilla can't.

Ubuntu :: Computer Won't Boot After Restoring Clonezilla Image?

Jul 18, 2011

I have long been using clonezilla as my backup/restore software and have never had a problem with it before, ever. Today I backed up my entire disk (windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10) and upgraded to 11.04 to try it out. I didn't like it, so I decided to restore the backup. Now I can't boot my computer. It gets to a black screen and nothing happens. No error message, nothing. I can still boot from a live USB (which is what I am using now), and I can also boot from a Windows Live CD. I tried using the MBR repair on Windows and reinstalling Grub through the Ubuntu Live USB. Neither of them have worked. Do you have any ideas what the problem might be?

General :: Restoring A Clonezilla Image To Larger Partition?

Jan 2, 2010

I'm trying to restore an image from a 40gb partition(6gb used) to a 100gb partition. I set everything up in gparted and and restored the partition image with clonezilla. In gparted, the partition shows the full 100gb partition with 6gb used, however when I boot windows and open the properties on the C: partition, it shows that it's only 40gb. Is there some setting to restore the partition image and use the full 100gb?

Software :: Install CloneZilla Image To Smaller Disk

Aug 18, 2010

I'm looking for some help on this issue. I have an image (Windows XP) made with CloneZilla of a 160Gb disk (used space = 11Gb) and I 'need' to restore that image to a smaller disk (120Gb). In order to try everything out I created a virtual machine in VMWare. I've tried about every option available in CloneZilla without succes. The latest thing I tried was using dd to just copy over the partition to a created partition on the smaller disk but when booting I got:

Code:Booting...Error loading operating system. Then I thought installing the image to a disk with the same size, resize the partition with GParted and make a new CloneZilla image, but for some odd reason (typical to Windows) when booting I get a BSOD, impossible to read. The BSOD happens when booting from the disk with the same size, before resizing the partition. This also is a virtual machine. Can anyone point out what I'm missing? Or, if anyone has succesfully done this, how did you go about it?

Software :: Unable To Restore A Backup Image To Drive Using Clonezilla?

Apr 23, 2011

I used Clonezilla an older version not the latest to backup an entire NTFS Windows XP drive to DVD last year. I have a series of three (3) of these DVD's but now cannot restore the backup image back to the same PC. The problem is that when booting with Clonezilla I don't have an option to restore from a CD or DVD drive since the computer comes with two working CD/DVD drives that are detected by the BIOS when the POST is displayed. I used one of these drives to boot with Clonezilla and the other one containing the backup image Disk 1 of Disk 3. Clonezilla only detects the two hard drives and a USB drive which is removable. Is there a bug in the restore process because it allowed me to backup the entire image of the hard drive onto a DVD last year but this time around there are no CD or DVD drive options available to choose other then the CD drive Clonezilla was used to boot up.

Ubuntu Servers :: Restore Image Via Clonezilla-drbl Smaller To Larger Disk?

Jun 21, 2011

I have an Ubuntu server and i've installed drbl-clonezilla to clone and restore pc, I have a 40 gigabyte image to be deployed on other pc's with larger hard drive ex. 160 GB or 240giga, my problem is that when I deploy the image on a larger disk I end up with a disk with a partition of 40 GB and the rest unallocated, how can i restore the the disk and use full disk space, the goal is to automate the process. In clonezilla-drbl there is the possibility to start a "prerun" and "postrun" fonction that could help complete the deployment process.

Ubuntu :: Couldn't Get Clonezilla To Work On System?

Feb 5, 2010

I finally understand why I couldn't get Clonezilla to work on my system. But, I am more baffled than ever.

You see, my system has been in great working order for months. I am running 9.10 32-bit and I keep everything maintained on a daily basis. I just updated to kernel 2.6.32-19 and, like I say, everything is working pretty much perfectly. But, yesterday, I volunteered to help with some official Canonical Ubuntu testing. This morning, I got an email from them that they want me to do the work and giving me instructions on how to proceed. The first thing to do is free up some disk space in order to have a special partition on which to install their testing kernels.

So, I downloaded their suggested tool for doing this, gparted. And, when I ran gparted, the first thing I discovered is that my disk drive has absolutely nothing on it! No partitions, at all. It only sees an empty device, /dev/sda. This is exactly what Clonezilla told me a couple of months ago - no partitions could be located to be backed up.

However, I and Ubuntu think I do have partitions:

Code:
$ df -Th
Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda5 ext3 19G 1.5G 16G 9% /
udev tmpfs 502M 360K 501M 1% /dev
none tmpfs 502M 204K 501M 1% /dev/shm
none tmpfs 502M 328K 501M 1% /var/run

[Code]...

Ubuntu Installation :: Restore My System Via Clonezilla Due To Hdd Failure?

Mar 23, 2011

I recently had to restore my system via clonezilla due to hdd failure. I frequently back up my /etc/apt folder as well as some other configuration files and settings that I use in my system to bring my restored image up to date with my ever changing preferences, etc.

I noticed the problem when I replaced the etc/apt folder with my backup version. After replacing the folder, I ran 'sudo apt-get update' and imported a list of all my previously installed software. Then I ran 'sudo apt-get upgrade'. I didn't get any errors at all during any part of the update and upgrade process. Then this popped up in my panel, and won't seem to go away.

General :: Building System To Run Emulators?

Nov 2, 2009

Looking at building a system that basically just runs emulators (nes, snes, etc). Haven't messed around with linux for a couple years so I thought this might be a great project to get back into it with. Maybe.

Questions I have-
- How easy is it to have a linux installation that just boots directly into the emulator? Since it will be hooked up to a tv, I just want it to be as easy as turning on the power button and then I'm off.
- Is there a stripped down linux distro that would be best suited for this type of setup? Really any recommendations for a distro would be great.
- Its running on old hardware- 900mhz athlon, 512mb ram, geforce2 video. Will this be a problem if I'm trying to run something like i've described?

Server :: Building The System Isn't A Stumbling Block?

Oct 4, 2010

my workplace is switching from Oracle app server to Tomcat. I've never been a sysad, and never administered an app server. So that part is going to be completely new to me.ortunately, I don't have to be the primary on this - but my manager is encouraging me to learn the setup and how to do the job.So, my situation is that my test "server" is a P2 with 256MB of RAM. I know I'm not going to get screaming performance out of it, but all I really need it to do is run my web server and file server to support my Tomcat install on a separate box (P3, 2.8GHz, dual-core with a gig of RAM).

I'm not really a n00b to Linux, so building the system isn't a stumbling block. Which distro, and which version of that distro, is a stumbling block. I know ubuntu is easy to set up, and very popular. If I went that way, should I get the desktop version? Or the server version? I *want* the GUI, but don't require it. And I'm not real certain what they're referring to (hw or sw) when they call it "desktop" or "server".I'm not looking for a challenge to broaden my horizons in terms of my Linux knowledge - I just want something I can set up quickly so I can get on with learning what I need to about the server installation, configuration and administration.

Ubuntu Installation :: Building New System For Win7/10.04 Using WUBI

Jun 4, 2010

So far my experience with Ubuntu has been using it in Virtual-Box and as a Live CD and Live-USB. I currently have laying around a CPU/GPU/PSU so i bought the rest missing to build a new computer. I got two hard drives (640gig for Win 7 & 80 gig for Ubuntu). I have been told on [H]ardForum . com to use WUBI. That its not necessarily great for long term usage, but its best to use WUBI, get the hang of Ubuntu and dual booting and all that...and then eventually to try a more permanent solution.

For now i am curious is there anything i should know before I start? I bought Win7 64bit so i want to use Ubuntu 64 bit as well correct?
Are using WUBI and going into the Boot-Menu and starting using the 80gig HDD with Ubuntu on it, two different options? If so which is better in your opinion?

Btw to install WUBI , do i install windows, put in the CD and click install WUBI which auto pops up, and follow directions and just make sure to have it install Ubuntu 10.04 64bit on the 80gig hard drive?

One last thing, i have seen screen caps of a menu (that looks like a boot menu before you enter your OS) that has options like "use memtest to test your memory" and "Check Ubuntu CD for errors" ....how do i get to that? I would really like to be able to do both of those things.

Hardware :: Building System - Interface With Car Sensors And Controls

Jun 25, 2010

My parents have given me a free pass to play around with their old Saab 900 Turbo and what I'd really like to do is put a small linux computer in there as an experiment (and application, ultimately). For this to be a realistically useful project I really should make it interface with all the cars sensors and controls e.g. speedometer, fuel gauge, mileage, thermostat etc. I assume that since these are analogue meters they use an electromagnetic dial? It should be possible then (and without too much effort) to hook it up to an input device like the Arduino? I don't really know because it's been a long time since I studied electronics properly. I've already found a touch screen, I'm fairly sure I know what computer I'm going to use (SheevaPlug) and I'll probably use debian with xfce for the OS.

General :: Building System - Required Packages / Libraries And Components

Jan 4, 2010

I installed the minimal-command line system from the kubuntu CD on my laptop, which is guess is roughly around 200mb after installation. I wish to install a Desktop Environment preferably KDE and I wanted to know how and where do I begin from? Do I need to have a working XORG prior to installation of KDE and do I also need to install Window mangers and e.t.c? What all packages/libraries and components do I need to install first? I'm really not sure where should I begin from.

Initially what I am trying to do is to have working GUI system, then later on I can install rest of the packages and software that I need, like office, GPU drivers, browser etc. Secondly, for a minimal KDE system, what metapackages are to be installed from this site? I believe kdebase, kdebase-runtime, kdebase-workspace are required. [URL]

Networking :: Building System Router - Can't Access Computers On Other Side Of Network / Fix It?

May 20, 2009

I have built a linux router with a pc having two network cards. I am running ubuntu 8.10.

I have enabled forwarding on the router. One network (192.168.1.0/24)is connected to eth0 and another (192.168.2.0/24) is connected to eth1.

The interfaces have addresses 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1.

On any side side of the network, I can ping both interfaces on the router.

However when I ping a machine on the other side of the network, I get 100% packet loss.

I have not touched iptables on the router or any machines.

What I am doing wrong?

Slackware :: Building Packages, Not Running An Alternate Operating System Or A Service Such As Ssh?

Mar 25, 2011

I have been playing with chroot to build packages.I am wondering about the limits or caveats of using chroot to mix operating systems. For example, what should I beware if I use 12.2 and chroot a 13.1 system? Or if I use 13.1 and chroot a 12.2 system? After all, the chroot does inherit some attributes of the parent system. There is the noticeable difference of kernel versions. For that one reason I'm thinking that mixing system versions might be frustrating.

My focus is building packages, not running an alternate operating system or a service such as ssh. I realize that building packages as root in a chroot potentially compromises security but that is not my focus.I am aware that a chroot is not a true virtual system.A virtual machine is an option, but in this thread I'm curious about the limitations of chroot. I find building packages in my virtual machines much slower than actual hardware, even with a dual core. Hence my interest in chroot

Fedora :: Used ANCRONIS To Image System?

Jun 12, 2011

On my old computer I used ANCRONIS to image my system. Even though this was a M$ program it worked. But for some reason, it refuses to boot on my new system. (Freezes)I have tried other imaging software such as GHOST, GHOST for LINUX, a couple of others for linux (I can't recall) & even CLONZILLA. All but Clonzilla refused to boot. Clonzilla, ran & made a backup but the restore had a problem with the GRUB that totally kept my system from booting & no attempt to fix it worked.I even used DEJA DUP & it SEEMS to work but it only restored a very small % of my system. I ended up having to manually restore WAY to much for my liking. - spent the whole evening! DEJA DUP would be nice IF it would do the whole OS, if there is a way I haven't found it, yet.I would like to find another imaging solution, preferably GUI, or some type that will backup & restore the WHOLE OS much like I had with my old machine. I really do NOT want to use DD either.
