Ubuntu :: Couldn't Get Clonezilla To Work On System?
Feb 5, 2010
I finally understand why I couldn't get Clonezilla to work on my system. But, I am more baffled than ever.
You see, my system has been in great working order for months. I am running 9.10 32-bit and I keep everything maintained on a daily basis. I just updated to kernel 2.6.32-19 and, like I say, everything is working pretty much perfectly. But, yesterday, I volunteered to help with some official Canonical Ubuntu testing. This morning, I got an email from them that they want me to do the work and giving me instructions on how to proceed. The first thing to do is free up some disk space in order to have a special partition on which to install their testing kernels.
So, I downloaded their suggested tool for doing this, gparted. And, when I ran gparted, the first thing I discovered is that my disk drive has absolutely nothing on it! No partitions, at all. It only sees an empty device, /dev/sda. This is exactly what Clonezilla told me a couple of months ago - no partitions could be located to be backed up.
However, I and Ubuntu think I do have partitions:
Code:
$ df -Th
Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda5 ext3 19G 1.5G 16G 9% /
udev tmpfs 502M 360K 501M 1% /dev
none tmpfs 502M 204K 501M 1% /dev/shm
none tmpfs 502M 328K 501M 1% /var/run

I've made a Debian installer CD using a netinst image some time ago and tried to install it my self, but I couldn't get the X system to work, and I wasn't sure If i made the correct actions at partitioning the drives etc
My primary OS is Vista, but I want to dual boot with Debian. I have two large drives, C: and D:. D: now is not visible from Vista as Debian is installed in it and it's the drive that I want to install debian in it. I was using grub to select OS, but when I decided to ask for your help, I wanted to format the D: drive. While trying to find a way to format it (it wasn't accessible by windows), I deleted the partition so grub was giving a 22 error and I couldn't boot my system. Finally, I've fixed that and now I want help to format D: (if necessary) and then install Debian with a Graphical User Interface in D:, but keep Vista in C: also. I have the Debian Installer CD, but I don't want to proceed alone, as I don't understand everything at the partitioning state, and I don't want to do something wrong and mess C: (or the entire machine).

I'm something of a Linux noob I must say. I run a community centre and we've been donated 50 ex government PCs to use in basic computing classes. The machines are HP DC7600 CMT tower base units, all with Windows XP Pro license stickers and blank hard drives obviously. set up a Ubuntu machine to clone Windows XP Pro onto a load of identical machines?
I could install all of them from disk and install drivers from pendrive but that would take forever! I like the idea of seting one up as I like it and cloning it across the LAN. Would save a massive amount of downloading updates for each client too. So far I've followed this guide: [URL] I can only get as far as stating up the drbl service (if that is the correct term?) but the terminal says something along the lines of "unknown command"So far I have one fully built base unit to use as the image, one running Ubuntu 10.4 and a 16 port switch (so I can clone 14 at a time?)

I recently had to restore my system via clonezilla due to hdd failure. I frequently back up my /etc/apt folder as well as some other configuration files and settings that I use in my system to bring my restored image up to date with my ever changing preferences, etc.
I noticed the problem when I replaced the etc/apt folder with my backup version. After replacing the folder, I ran 'sudo apt-get update' and imported a list of all my previously installed software. Then I ran 'sudo apt-get upgrade'. I didn't get any errors at all during any part of the update and upgrade process.Then this popped up in my panel, and won't seem to go away.

In 2010 I want to build a new linux box. I currently have a dual-boot system...
IDE1 = WinXP 200GB Master
IDE1 = Opensuse 11.0 Slave 80GB
I have cloned both drives with CloneZilla (CZ) and restored with it aswell. My 80GB is a Western Digital Caviar Model (WD800BB-00JKC0). The drive I'm thinking of buying is a WD Caviar SE (WD800AAJB) [URL]. Will my restore images work with this drive? Its a 80GB but the model numbers differ. Does it make a difference?

we have a Win NT4 system used for an important application used at two places. At one place it has gone bad. I want to create an image from good system and restore it at the second location. Is it possible to do this using "clonwzilla live cd"? Does it harm the good system? Can I save the created image to an USB drive?

Programs like aMSN, and controlling music volume, etc are gone in the upper-taskbar/panel. I think I accidentally managed to delete the whole upper panel, and created a new one. Still the programs I start up which suppose to appear in the upper panel, don't appear there. Any idea how to fix this, or to add those functions to the upper panel?

Is this a beta version or something? I installed this version because it came as a live cd coupled with emc2 for cnc machining. I cannot get anything to work correctly. I tried to install Mozilla thunderbird using the application manager and it is very slow. It takes forever for the menus to open. or emails and is virtually unusable. I tried to use the startup manager and it killed my grub bootloader so I needed to reinstall. I couldnt successfully use the grub2 console prompt to log back into linux even though I ollwed several tutorials for this. I tried to install the flash player plugin and it kept telling me still to install it before I could watch flash videos even though I had installed it 3 or 4 times. I just tried to install evolution mail and it cannot log into my gmail account. I tried to install swift dove which is a faster version of thunderbird and it says it is starting but then never does. I am reasonably sure I should hang in there as I have heard Ubuntu is very good as an os.

I have just installed fedora12 from the Live CD couldn't get my mobile broadband to work on the Live CD, thought I would go ahead and install anyway and hoped for more success from the installation.
But nothing seems to work. I have tried just plugging it in and waiting for it to be registered, I have tried various manual set ups including enabling point to point encryption in the VPN manager and nothing seems to work at all.
The device is a Huawei K3520 USB modem.
Am I just doing something really stupid or is there some obscure method to get this working.
This is the only internet connection which i have available at the moment so anything I download will have to be done through Windows and copied across, i.e. I can't use YUM.
lsusb returns the following:
Not sure where the E620 comes from the model number on the case is k3520

16GB RAI've been running the Debian-based Proxmox VE on it for six months or so with no problems.Today I loaded Centos 5.5 x64. During a reboot, the file system crashed and fsck couldn't repair.I loaded it again, did all the updates, and loaded my applications. On about the third reboot, it crashed again and fsck couldn't fix it.I don't really know where to begin. I doubt seriously that any hardware has went bad since yesterday.

I was having a problem with cairo dock, asked on the board how to resolve was told to reinstall the visual driver for my monitor since I have an ati vid card since with the updated kernal u have to reinstall those drivers(didn't know that, I'm new to opensuse). I thought I did that before so I completely uninstalled it so I could then do a fresh reinstall but I wasn't paying attention and my laptop was unplugged for a while. I stepped away while the install was going on and my laptop died.
I tried plugging it in but had to restart my laptop when I did I got the command line rows and when I tried to start GDM it wouldn't start, I did so as SU. Attempted to connect to the internet via networkmanager and couldn't get wifi or wired to work. Anyway I can access my desktop visually just so I can start yast and install the driver or will I have to reinstall 11.2 or use the cd to repair? If so how do I use the cd to repair?

I migrated back from Maverick because I couldn't get Tvtime to work because /dev/mixer is no longer created in 10.10 so no volume control from within tvtime. I'm now back to 10.04. The issue that I'm having is that I have 4 devices that show up as /dev/mixer, /dev/mixer1,/dev/mixer2 and /dev/mixer3. I need to have tvtime use the mixer associated with my soundblaster audigy card.
whenever I reboot, the order of these devices changes. Sometimes the soundblaster is assoaciated with /dev/mixer , sometimes it's /dev/mixer2 etc. Is there a way to ensure that the devices are always in the same place/order? On a related note, sometimes my usb webcam is video1 other times it's video0 , this also causes problems with tvtime. How can I ensure that my system is the same after each boot? I tried dev rules but couldn't get them to work properly.

I am trying to set up clonezilla on pxe so that it will start up and show the drones in the workplace a list of images, they choose the one named after the model of computer, and image it. Which means all clonezilla settings but image need to be set and it should automatically choose default settings at 1024x768 when grub pops up. I have looked for command-line options, scripts to run, etc... so far this is what I have...
Code:
#!/bin/bash
. /opt/drbl/sbin/drbl-conf-functions
. /opt/drbl/sbin/ocs-functions
. /etc/ocs/ocs-live.conf
ocs_live_run=`ocs-live-restore`
ocs_live_extra_param=`-p reboot -r hda`
ocs_live_keymap=`NONE`
ocs_live_batch="no"
ocs_lang="en_US.UTF-8"
ocs_daemonon=`samba`
I don't need the bash for selecting the image, but you might as well add that seeing as there's almost no info online for people who want a pxe server...

I am a noob at Ubuntu. I currently have 8.04 and I am looking at upgrading to 8.10 and beyond. I want to make a recovery disk with Clonezilla so if something goes wrong with the upgrade I can go right back to where I am now. I have a 16 Gig thumb drive that I want to boot Clonezilla from. Then I want to burn an image to my DVD burner. I am stuck at one point in the process. I am reading the instructions from[URL]..
This part is where I am stuck is step 4.To make your USB flash drive bootable, first change the working dir, e.g. "cd /media/usb/utils/linux", then run "bash makeboot.sh /dev/sdb1" (replace /dev/sdb1 as your USB flash drive device name), and follow the prompts to finish that. My USB drive is named M-S325 so if I enter cd/ media/M-S325/utils/linux in terminal I get the error no such file or directory. I know it is something stupid simple I am doing wrong, but I am stuck. What do I need to do to make my UBD drive bootable with Clonezilla ?

I used Clonezilla to image a Ubuntu partition of 18GB and restored it to a partition of 30GB. (showing as "sdb1") I understand now that I should have put it onto a partition the same size as the original and then resized that partition with Gparted, but I put it directly onto a larger partition and thought all was well, but now I'm running into disk space warning messages. It still works fine but the OS still seems to think it is still on an 18GB partition and that it is running out of space. The partition "sdb1", is on a large drive I partitioned with Gparted. The various utils I have to look at partitions do not agree:
*Disk Utility reports sdb1 size as 33GB
*KDE Partition Manager reports sdb1 size as 30.28GB with 15.59GB used (therefore 14.69GB free)
*KDiskFree reports sdb1 size as 18.3GB with 1.8GB free
*Gparted reports sdb1 size as 30.28GB with 27.54GB used
*Gparted (used after booting from a Mint installation) give same result
*PROPERTIES (using live knoppix DVD) shows size of files as 16.0GB (16.5GB on disk)
After booting with Knoppix DVD and trying to copy everything onto another drive (to see how many GB there are) gives "invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character" error message. how to sort this out, without resizing the partition as I've got a lot of data on the HD now.
