is it possible to make a system image with ease? By that I mean without having to fire up clonezilla and click through 15 clicks? I am probably being lazy and have noticed the really easy way to make a system image in windows - is there something similiar in ubuntu?

2. Drivers. Why can't I just have an automatic wrapper for Windows drivers so I can use any printer or scanner, or a simple point and click driver install for native drivers? I have my ethernet connected Brother MFC-7820N, and the Samsung CLP-315 that runs off my CS407 installed and working on my Jaunty, but it was way more work than expected. What is the easy, automatic or point and click way to install drivers?
3. Graphics drivers. I have decent cards in my big boxes, Nvidia GTX 200 series. But when I get kernel updates, I have to uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver. Is there an easy way to keep this working?
4. Is there one flavor of linux distro that has a really consistent standard for user interface? I like to be able move things around, but do like my menus to be consistent (and do I ever hate the MS ribbon!). I've really only tried Ubuntu.
Linux installs have come a long, long way from the old days, and are such a point and click operation that I just wonder what I'm doing wrong. Someone is bound to have sorted these things.

When I was using F10, I changed the desktop background (Using Gnome and right clicking on the desktop to see settings)nd then selected the option to make it the default so that the chosen wallpaper appears when I try to log in. View 10 Replies View RelatedI've had enough with the malware that finds it's way into Windows. I currently have our home desktop (WinXP) which is plugged into our high speed cable modem. We also use a laptop (Windows Vista) downstairs which currently shares the internet wirelessly from our main desktop upstairs. Whenever we want to view pics, listen to music or surf the web, I just plug in my wireless router which is connected to the cable modem and my XP box.
How is it that I can still view my desktop's pictures, listen to my desktop's tunes and surf the web on my Vista laptop downstairs once I install Ubuntu on my desktop?
Just wondering if it is possible to make use of the Windows keys on keyboards - the ones with MS logo.In Vista - the action is to invoke the Start Menu.In Linux, there is no action when you press these keys - can this be changed?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have recently used PowerTop to get information about what settings I could tweak to make my laptop more power efficient. However, my problem is that all such changes seem to dissapear as soon as I reboot my machine. For example, if I run:
echo 1500 > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs
This value will have been rewritten to 500 when I reboot. Is there any way to change this, and make sure that any and all changes I do to my system remain permanent until I change them to something else? This question is of course not limited to Powertop, I would also like changes I do via for example cpufreq to be permanent as well.

I have a system which i installed on usb flash (doesn't matter why). The system has 3 partitions: "boot", "/" and "swap". "Swap" and "/" are encrypted by LUKS. "Swap" is encrypted by random key, "/" - by passphrase.
I created this system only to make a liveDVD from it (not liveUSB).
To achieve this goal i installed program called "Systemback" (fork of Remastersys).

So i pushed the button 'Create live system' (or Live system create, don't remember exactly) and configured it to automatically convert .*sblive to .*iso
Program made it's work and i burned image in DVD.
But when i launch it i have this:
The last picture - is when i trying to startliveDVD with installed LVM2. No difference except one message.
I went to freenode and ask some questions. Somebody told me that maybe the problem is in LVM. But LVM was already installed, so i installed LVM2. No result.
How can i make the system that is encrypted by LUKS work from DVD? And is it really possible? Maybe systemback doesn't support feature to make live-image of encrypted system?
The system is Debian 8.1.0
I did the same with nonencrypted system - result is succesfull, liveDVD works.
I have purchased a 500Gb seagate external hard disk.I partitioned it using the xp disk manager. I have now 320gb primary NTFS partition for accessing & storing data through XP & kept 144Gb of unallocated space for installation of Redhat Enterprise Linux 6.0. I have the dvd of RHEL 6.0, now please guide me through the process. I know I have to boot from my dvd drive. But i don't know how to manually allocate & partition the swap, and how much to mount under '/' & under'/boot'.. And also how to set it up for the dual boot.

What exactly allows me to create a custom tailored *.img file to backup the contents of a partition?
This is my problem: My wife wants me to backup some Windows NTFS partitions on her working computer so she can use them on a different computer.
This is my solution attempt:Boot the Gentoo based System Rescue CD. dd the contents of the data partitions into *.img files on an external usb drive. dd the contents of the *.img files onto the new computer.
So far that worked, but there's one annoying problem: one partition on the work computer is 50GB big, but contains only 8GB of data. It would be really nice if I could just dd out those 8GB of "real data" instead of having a 50GB *.img file that is mostly empty. Likewise, it would be cool if there's an easy way to match the contents of the *.img file to the size of the new partition. The new data partition is 100GB big so it would be cool if my backup were automatically scaled to that size so I don't have an 8GB partition and an additional 92GB partition.
When I had Firefox 3.6 on both my desktop and laptop, after reading a how-to, I changed the desktop config so it looked, to websites, as though Firefox was running on a windows machine. I needed that because some websites still believe there is only one operating system (for the most part those are government run sites). how to change the config in Firefox 4 to make it look as though it is running on a windows machine?

This firmware update will probably destroy the data on them. I also want to add one or two other hard-drives to the RAID. What I am looking for, is a tool, that makes a clone of the system as it is now. And then, when I will have upgraded the disk firmware and added the other hard-drives, I just clone the system back from the clone.

any system/kernel parameter set is missing in production which might cause this large amount of page fault. If any more information is required let me know?

I tried compiling linux kernel 2.6.37-rc2 (mainline), Compilation and installation of kernel and modules went fine. After that while trying to make initrd image, I used the following command :-

It is showing warnings like :-

Actually, "2.6.37-rc2" folder is missing in "firmware".
I've already went through the regular process of installation, adding the backports repository and doing the debian way installation, but somehow the system isn't assuming the plugin.
I've rebooted the web browser and even the entire system, but still the plugin does not work.
Whenever I'm dealing with large numbers of computers that need to have identical windows installations put on them, I love using Symantec/Norton Ghost to image the NTFS partition (just making the .gho file the size of the disk I've used, instead of the 160/320GB full volume size), and then uploading it automatically to a windows share.I'd love to be able replicate this exact process with Ubuntu. I have one computer that's ready to go, and a few dozen more that I'd like to quickly get that same image on.
I've heard that there's a command called dd that can make disk images, but I'd really like some sort of boot disk that can allow me to make an image, save it, then run the boot disk on another computer to allow me to reconnect to the server and dump that image on that computer. Ghost 4 Linux doesn't have a network/server component, I think.even if such solutions cost money, I'd love to know if they exist or not.
I have installed the most basic Arch Linux only with command line interface as guest OS on Windows using VMware. The problem is when I maximize the Vmware window, the Arch Linux console does not adjust to the full screen. How to do this without installing X window?

I decided to use this computer with Ubuntu for the next few months but it is absolutely crucial to preserve the current WindowsXP state somehow. Is there a safe way to "conserve" that very Windows installation as an image so I can recopy it later on? I'd like to clean out the computer completely to install Ubuntu afterwards. After using Ubuntu I want to install the old WindowsXP again as it was before. Is that even possible? Power on and XP boots as before? I mean driver, accounts, passwords etc? What would you recommend?

i have been using this for a close to 2 years but have recently run into a problem where i am only getting part of the image. This is the first windows 7 64 bit machine that i have done it on so im not sure if that has to do with it.
the error im getting is dd: reading '/dev/sda' : input/output error
it is erroring out at the exact same point everytime i try it.
Can I download a Linux iso image from a Windows mirror? I don't see any problems, but my IT guy tells me that it just can't happen because a Linux download server uses a different protocol. But, I could be wrong...
