I have a Packard Bell Imedia desktop with on-board ATI graphics. I also have a spare Nvidia PCI card. Is there a way I could use the Nvidia to run a second screen, if so how as the Nvidia and fglrx drivers seem to collide in a show stopping way!!I am running Kubuntu Intrepid, but have resorted to Gnome as KDE4 went spectacularly wrong on me.
View 5 RepliesI have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

I also bought a PCI-Express Nvidia graphics card so I could use the VDPAU feature on Linux (plays H.264 in hardware). The BIOS has three settings about which display to initialize first:
Integrated graphics
PCI graphics
PCI-Express graphics (PEG)
I set the BIOS on PEG, but
I cannot get anything, not even a splash screen or POST messages, to emerge from the PCI-Express graphics card. (I'm using a DVI connector; the card also has an HDMI output.)I cannot get the kernel lspci to see the graphics card; the only VGA controller it acknowledges is the integrated one.Running dmidecode acknowledges the existence of an x16 PCI Express slot, and it says

There is an additional BIOS setting called "Internal Graphics Mode" which is normally set to "Auto" which means it is supposed to prefer a PCI Express VGA card. I set it to "Disabled" which now means I'm getting no output at all. I will soon be learning how to do a BIOS reset!
Other information: The PCI-E card is a MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210. This is a fanless card. Although there are no fans to see turning, the heat sink on the PCI-E card is definitely getting hot, so the card is getting some sort of power.It gets all its power from the PCI-E slot; there is no external power connector.The BIOS is an AMI Award BIOS.how can I make the PCI Express graphics card visible to Ubuntu?

I'm running Ubuntu as a guest virtual machine (via VirtualBox) on a Windows 7 machine and have a LOT of problems with getting the graphics to work properly... I've tried for a couple of days now without success. I don't know if the problem is with VirtualBox or Ubuntu, but I'll try to post it here if anyone has any suggestions.

I had downloaded the Nvidia driver from their site but the way it installed on Ubuntu is not the same here in Debian. Obviously, I failed.
How do I use the proprietary graphics for my nvidia card?
I use KDE, and I've installed both kmod-nvidia and akmod-nvidia, and when I went to activate the special affects I ran into problems. I had to use Xrender for it to work at all (and that just went really slow) whereas OpenGL just made my screen go black, with a mouse and window borders if I alt+tabbed.
I reinstalled and only have the default video driver installed (nouveau or something like that) and I'm a bit scared to try prorprietary graphics without a step-by-step guide that works, which I haven't been able to find.
I have a system with two nVidia graphics cards, with monitors connected to each graphics card. I used nvidia-settings to setup a X server for each graphics card. Rebooted with saved xorg.conf file. I do see all monitors displaying their correct image. I am using Gnome 2 supplied with 11.3. The problem is: how do I start applications on the 2nd X server? If I use the application launcher on 2nd X server, the applications appear on the monitors of the 1st X server. I am also unable to move applications windows from one X server to the other.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm just starting out with ubuntu (10.04), and installed it using a live cd on my alienware m5500. I had the update manager update everything, and then went looking on how to properly use my nvidia graphics card (geforce go 7600) because the graphics weren't looking very good, and I couldn't use any desktop effects.
I followed the directions found here in order to blacklist nouveou and enable the current nvidia driver. However after rebooting, and every time I time I turn on the computer, it never makes it to the desktop, i usually end up seeing the ubuntu startup and/or the nvidia logo before it proceeds to one of several screens (none of which allow me to click or type, although sometimes i can move the mouse).

Thinking that it could be one of the listed bugs from the directions, I followed the work around for "Screen Blanks/Monitor Turns Off", but the problem persists. Let me know if I can provide any other information that may prove useful - I'm fairly new to linux in general, but I can probably get some information from recovery mode if I've got a little guidance.
There's no login screen and I can't get to a tty. I have tried editing xorg with the backup, but the name of the driver is the same.Is there anyway to roll back the driver from a livecd?
View 9 Replies View RelatedA few days ago, I upgraded my system from the EOL 9.04 to 10.04LTS. This did go relatively well, though the upgrade process reported some "could not update" errors for the NVIDIA drivers and at the first boot it reported it had to start in low graphics mode. I noticed that I had manually installed drivers from NVIDIA's website before the upgrade, while afterwards the hardware drivers from the package manager had been enabled. I then disabled Ubuntu's drivers, and attempted to manually reinstall NVIDIA's own drivers.
This resulted in some errors related to the install script not being able to find some vdpau related stuff. Something interesting then occured. As root everything worked flawless, but as normal user I still ended up with errors resulting Ubuntu to continue in low graphics mode. So I enabled the package managers driver again. This seemed to solve all issues for the next 5 boots. Until this morning, I again get a black screen with only a blinking "_" on the screen for quite some time, after which (nice feature) Ubuntu proposes to continue in low graphics mode.

I got Linux Ubuntu because my Vista installation messed up, and I couldnt find the recovery CD. Im pretty glad I installed Linux, as it seems really freidnly, and a bit more open that Windows, I must admit. The problem is, I am trying to install my Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS on the system, and it isnt working. It was working fine on Vista before, so it shouldnt be a hardware problem. I have followed various instructions on websites, whioch take me throguh some stuff about stopping GNOME, removing * linux restricted module * and so on. But when I get to the crucial point, with the agreements and installations for Nvidia, it tells me it cant detect any graphics cards.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI am using nvidia fx 5500 graphic card and still have unresolved problems with graphic. At this moment I cannot set X window system to work properly. My first attempt after installing slack -current was to install nvidia's 'blob' driver. As it is know 'blob' conflicts with 'noveau' open source driver for nvidia cards. 'Blob' cannot install with noveau running. Thus I blacklisted 'noveau' and installed the 'blob'. After I restarted the computer it seemed it is Ok, but 1) it is really very hard to set the proper value of gamma correction, contrast and brightnest, 2) after logout the X server didn't restart and computer was 'dumb'.
I have some prerequisites to suspect the 'nv' X.org native driver for bugs, but I tested and driver is ok, however it is impossible to work wit this driver, it can only accomplish 60 Hz V. refresh,

Additionally: in fact I have to graphic devices - nvidia on AGP and VIA graphic onboard card (VT1344). BIOS points to AGP as primary graphic device.
After upgrading (from 10.10), i get a line command prompting for login. I cannot get past this line/prompt. How do I bypass this prompt? So that I can access a prior version, if possible.

The nvidia-graphics bit is coming from atrpms - the kernel is coming from updates. What exactly does this mean? Does it mean that nvidia-graphics has not been built for this version of the kernel (centos-plus)? I am hoping to use centos-plus, as I need the support for DVB cards.

I had trouble even getting the repos to respond on the live cd or after installation; is opensuse having network problems? I changed the repositories to the GA tech libraries because they are closer and now they work, However I can't get any Nvidia drivers to install. Now, I'm not a super linux guru that can fly around linux like super man, but I'm also not a newbie to linux. Or at least I think I'm not.

I'm running Karmic on AMD64x2, and I have Compiz. I have been running fine, but when I run top, I see that compiz.real always takes up 100% of one of the cores of my CPU. this happens even when I change the visual effects to none in the appearance preferences. This problem starts as soon as I log in. My graphics card is an nvidia 8400gs, which is not that good, and I've installed my drivers using envy. Does anyone have any ideas about this problem?

The last time I looked, Nvidia was the preferred graphics chipset as they tended to support Linux better than ATI. Is this still the case?[url].... seem to have lots of ATI cards in stock but hardly any Nvidia (despite offering a similar sized range), but I don't want to get an ATI card if it's not preferred for technological reasons (or even FOSS ethical reasons!).

Is the open source drive good enough to use or should I install the Nvidia driver? I know that things are generally easier with the default driver, especially for support on older cards, but I would like to get the best performance I can. This is for my Dad's computer, so he won't be playing any games, but if it will help with 2D and video that would be great.

What is causing this graphic distortion?I dropped Vista because this problem would crash the video driver and pop a black screen for a few seconds over and over and over and over.Now that I installed ****ING Ubuntu it's doing this problem, but without the black screens and only messed up graphics show.So what the heck guys, is this a hardware or software problem? And this same type of graphic distortion appears in games like Combat Arms and Halo.I am so SICK of NVIDIA never ever in my whole entire life will I ever buy NVIDIA again! Luckily for nvidia I'm only 17 years old and have 40 years of life left to buy computers without nvidia in them. Now when I boot up, after bios the loading screen looks like in the picture (sorry its crappy quality). When it gets to the login screen and afterwards it is just blank, but i can tell its running underneath because i can shut down by doing ctrl alt backspace and then tab and enter. I tried entering recovery mode but it was the same. Atm im using a live cd.

I disabled X via terminal and then I ran a Virtual Console. With the virtual console I ran the chmod command and the went through the installation. It did bring up a message with something about my distro not having a pre-configured script (or something like that) and asked me if I would like to continue anyway. I choose Yes and the installation failed.
