Hardware :: ATI Driver Dosen't Work On Opensuse 11.3
Jul 26, 2010
I found that the ATI driver doesn't work on Opensuse 11.3, which is quite annoying!but what they discussed doesn't work for my graphic card, which is ATI FirePro MV 2260. The successful test on Opensuse 11.3 is Radeon cards. I always got 'kernel not match' error. Is there anyone have the same problem like me?

after using Gnome on my 11.3 system I wanted to go back to KDE4. So I installed the patterns and now I can choose it from gdm and it works fine. But if I also try to use kdm, nothing works. I see the kdm login screen without any users. Autologin isn't set in system settings. Any idea how to reset all the kdm settings to default? KDM Screenshot (oxygen theme):

I noticed the debian was not giving me sound playback to some things, such as some games. but other games worked.
So being the ignorant idiot i am i blindly ran alsaconf and did something and now my sound dose not work at all, but if i go to the top panel, click on system- go to preffrences then sound, i can select my input out put device and I happen to use a Usb audio device with a mic.
If i play the test sound i actually get the continuous beep that plays, i can hear it.but now, the Mic dose not work for things like Skype or anything else. also, the sound dose not work when i load ANY games. I come from a windows background if that helps.
when i type the code:
I get a message that says: Rockwell International Device 4310
If i'm not a complete fool, then i believe that is my sound card.
I think that after running "alsaconf" a second time i was able to mount the correct sound device.
but it gives me the error message:Terminating processes: 3721.
Unloading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-usb-audio snd-usb-lib snd-riptide snd-ac97-codec snd-seq-dummy snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm snd-opl3-lib snd-hwdep snd-page-alloc snd-mpu401-uart snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi snd-rawmidi snd-seq-midi-event snd-seq snd-timer snd-seq-device.
Building card database...
Loading driver...
Now ALSA is ready to use.
For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer.
So, is there a way to reinstall my alsa drivers or something. sound dose not work after this, by the way. And will updateing debian lenny solve this? i am not sure which version i have, but it is for sure the 32-bit version. im at my wits end. Reinstalling the whole os can be an option, but i really dont want to do that. first i would have to reinstall Windows xp and install debian useing a windows installer. booting from an ios dose not seem to work for my system. I have an old computer, it was built for windows 98 computer.

I upgraded Ubuntu version 8 to version 9.10 and VMware dosen't work no more. After I launch WVware Workstation a message appears: "Before you can run VMware Workstation, several modules must be compiled and loaded into running kernel." I select install (yes), and after that it's giving me error: "Unable to build kernel module. See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-30979.log for details."

No wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.
However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.
I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.

I've got a ATI graphic card, which is not a Radeon bla bla, and it is a Fire Pro MV 2260. I download the official driver from ATI(AMD) website, and it gives me:
'firepro_8.723-linux_98794.zip'and unzip will produce 'fglrx-8.723'
I change the things according to this thread:
openSUSE Lizards ATI HD57xxx fglrx drivers under 11.3
However, after installation I can't start X. The log shows the kernal doesn't match.
Then I try to install the ATI Catalyst 10.7. It won't start X as well. I think maybe ATI Catalyst 10.7 is particular designed for Radeon, isn't it?
BTW, why there is no entry for 11.3 at:
Additional package repositories - openSUSE
NVIDIA drivers is updated, but ATI seems very lazy...

I made the mistake of trying to install an nvidia graphics driver from the download.nvidia.com/opensuse11.2 repository. My card is a PCI quadro nvs 295 so looks like it should be supported. The installation and update of the kernel seemed to be successful, but for some reason sax2 doesn't seem to recognise the nvidia card, even when I run "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia" and I'm stuck with the VESA framebuffer graphics default in /etc/X11/xorg.conf code...
I've found tons of threads on this kind of thing but I only seem to be making things worse trying to fix it. If anyone can give me a hint and fix my pathetic-looking desktop I'd be very grateful!!! At the moment nothing that uses opengl will work either

I am the owner of a webcam named "Microdia videocam NB 300", but the outcase says "Genius".
This camera DOES works on openSUSE 11.1 but not on 11.2 (my current setup) and after a lot of research i realise that the preblem is that the proper driver "sn9c102" for my webcam is not compiled on the new kernels.

I just performed a fresh install of Suse 11.4. It worked great except that the network communication would cut in and out intermittently. I managed to solve the problem posting it here for other users and for future suse releases. I will give the hardware I am running, the symptoms and the fix:
Hardware
=======
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H67MA-UD2H-B3
Ethernet controller: Realtek RTL8111E
Default module: r8169 (run lsmod to see loaded modules)
[Code].....
1) First make sure that linux kernel source is installed in your system (yast software management)
2) ensure that gcc is installed (yast software management)
3) Download the latest linux driver for RTL8111E from the realtek website The one that I am running is the 8168 driver version 8.024.00
4) unzip the tarball (creates a directory called "r8168-x.xxx.xx")
5) As root run the autorun.sh from inside the newly created "r8168-x.xxx.xx" directory

I want to dual boot Windows Server 2008 r2 and Ubuntu 10.10 . First, I installed Server 2008 r2 then Ubuntu. After the installation, Grub only found Ubuntu, and "Windows Recovery Enviroment (loader)" on dev/sda1. The Windows OS is installed on dev/sda2. When i load "Windows Recovery Enviroment (loader)" it does a chdsk, then reboot the PC.
How can i make grub find the Windows OS?
Edit: The partition on dev/sda1 is called System Reserved

I have a rack of IBM x335s. They are all running 802.1Q over 802.3ad, that is VLAN trunking over two physical Ethernet bonded with LACP. Its been working fine on all of the servers for years. One server recently had its hard drives upgraded and CentOS reinstalled. It is a minimal install. The server has been reconfigured exactly as it was and has been verified and compared against the other working servers. It will not enslave the interfaces on boot. You can manually enslave and then bring up the network, so that much of the configuration is verified. It simply refuses to enslave... which fails everything that comes after thatHere is a snippet of the message log on the machine that does not enslave on boot

There is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed. The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.
Having typed that, IMHO this is NOT a Tumbleweed specific issue, but its MUCH WIDER in scope and hence does not belong as a discussion in this Tumbleweed thread.

How do I check if I'm using the Nouveu driver or the Nvidia Binary driver? I thought things were running nicely with the free driver because I had compositing working on my dismal graphics card... But scrolling in firefox is slow/laggy so I tried installing the binary driver with 1click install. But I restarted and still have the same problem. I think I might still be using the nouveu driver? Actually, scratch that last sentence. I just did lspci -v and got this output:
Code:

I have Fedora 12 right now, and I've come to the conclusion that the ATI catalyst drivers version 9.11 aren't going to work at all on that system, so I was going to downgrade to fedora 10 and install 9.8 or so on it. But what I was wondering is if I install Fedora 10 and then upgrade the kernel will that make the ATI drivers not work? Do I need to turn automatic updates off?

I think I've one of the badest configurations to use fc15 and gnome-shell. I run a AMD HD 6950 and I have these bugs in gnome-shell (e.g. rainbow color, corrupt icons, ..) with the official AMD fglrx driver. As I can see, the opensource ATI driver only supports cayman based gpu (like mine) if using a 2.6.39 kernel. Mine is a 2.6.38.6-27.fc15.x86_64, so I don't get any support.Any ideas how to get the opensource driver to work and fix these ugly gnome-shell bugs?Shell I install the 2.6.39 Kernel from FC16?I really like the new gnome-shell and got used to it on my thinkpad x61s, so I like to use it on my workstation, too.

I just tried a fresh install of ubuntu 9.04 and a new attempt for 3D acceleration with my ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 - AND IT WORKED! thanx to this guide: [URL] glxinfo | grep "direct rendering" was giving a YES and playonlinux in the terminal didn't give the usual "you don't seem to have any 3D acceleration" message. For a few minutes, my happiness was greater then ever (ehum) I installed Jedi Knight II, Jedi Outcast, and it worked. Only I couldn't adjust the screen size or the gamma (and a few other minor video settings). After some install/reinstall of playonlinux and wine I found out something: 3D acceleration didn't work any longer. glxinfo | grep "direct rendering" is now giving
direct rendering: No (LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT set) and I get the error in Playonlinux that i don't have any 3D acceleration. I want to know how this could happen? My xorg didn't change at all. But for completeness, here it is:

I've started playing around with debian 6 stable, and was just wondering if its worth it to go to the trouble of removing nouveau, or if it will handle everything well enough. I use my laptop for a little bit of gaming (older games) under wine, all the basic email/web browsing/writing stuff, some photo editing under gimp, movies/music, and a very little bit of Blender work. Will Nouveau handle all this well enough, or should I use the proprietary nvidia driver?

I had a problem with using ndiswrapper to install Windows driver on Netgear WN511TA wireless adapter card. Problem solved by replacing Netgear WN511TA with Airlink101 AWLC6080 PCMCIA wireless adapter to work in my triple-boot XP Pro/Ubuntu Karmic/openSUSE 11.2 Toshiba laptop and using the latest Linux driver version 2.3.0.0 dated January 29, 2010 from Ralinktech site. I followed driver instruction in a Ubuntuforums tutorial (Howto: Ralink RT2860(m) PCI(e) RT2860...on Intrepid).
I am wondering if I can use the same Linux driver (RT2860sta) for openSUSE 11.2 on my triple-boot XP Pro/Karmic/openSUSE laptop, ie. copying over instead of building and compiling driver from source again, because I don't quite understand the build instruction given in the README file of Ralink's Linux driver file. Specifically, I don't know how to "define the GCC and LD (?) of the target machine, and define the compiler flags CFLAGS(?), modify your need (?)", etc. I already have gcc, cpp and make installed on the Ubuntu and openSUSE parts of my machine. I did try ndiswrapper in openSUSE but it doesn't work for the Windows version of the latest Ralink driver (error: invalid driver rt2860.inf).
