OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Driver Update Disk Doesn't Work

May 19, 2010

I've patched my kernel to enable my IDE-mode SATA drivers (ata_piix.c), and everything works fine. But when I attempt to create a Driver Update Disk with this structure, it doesn't work (though the same format works for SLES11):

OpenSUSE Wireless :: RTL8191SE Driver On Compaq Presario CQ62 Doesn't Work With XP Driver

Oct 23, 2010

No wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.

However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.

I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: ATI Driver Doesn't Work On 11.3 X86_64?

Jul 27, 2010

I've got a ATI graphic card, which is not a Radeon bla bla, and it is a Fire Pro MV 2260. I download the official driver from ATI(AMD) website, and it gives me:

''and unzip will produce 'fglrx-8.723'

I change the things according to this thread:

openSUSE Lizards ATI HD57xxx fglrx drivers under 11.3

However, after installation I can't start X. The log shows the kernal doesn't match.

Then I try to install the ATI Catalyst 10.7. It won't start X as well. I think maybe ATI Catalyst 10.7 is particular designed for Radeon, isn't it?

BTW, why there is no entry for 11.3 at:

Additional package repositories - openSUSE

NVIDIA drivers is updated, but ATI seems very lazy...

Fedora Installation :: Software Update - Fedora ( - Nvidia Driver Doesn't Work

Sep 1, 2010

Fedora ( I installed that update, during the installation process it said that it had to remove three packages, one of them was kmod nvidia for the old kernel (Fedora ( the update finished installing the new kernel, I restarted the system and Nvidia did not load. (I assume because Update manager removed the old nvidia? But I also assumed that a new version would be installed automatically?)I received the following Boot messages:

Entering non-interactive startup
Starting monitoring for VG vg_user1: 3 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg_user1" monitored

I'm confused, if Update Manager removed kmod nvidia, then why does yum say it is installed? And why doesn't the new kernel update work with that version? Or should I install a driver version for that particular kernel? I've read while searching that I need to install a kmod-nvidia for that particual kernel version and that I should login to my previous kernel until that happens, is that the problem I'm having?

Why don't rpmfusion and fedoraproject release the kmod-nvidia and kernel updates at the same time to avoid problems such as this? Does anyone know how long does it usually take for rpmfusion to release the new kmod-nvidia driver for the latest kernel?

OpenSUSE Install :: USB Doesn't Work At All Once

As stated, NO USB functions, not at all, the light on the mouse is on, but it does not move on screen, the PS2 keyboard does not function either. Nothing that would allow you to install it, works at all. I am absolutely shocked not one single person on here has mentioned this.

The last time I tried OpenSuse was version 10, it installed without issue, I noted the installer as the nicest one in the Linux world I had seen to date, only to be utterly let down by this USB fumble.I have Legacy USB support, Legacy Keyboard and Legacy Mouse USB support on, that isn't the issue, and this didn't happen with 10 on the same system.

I installed Debian 5.0.1 this way and it wouldn't boot, so I got SGD to "fix" it, which it said was successful, but all I get is a partition doesn't exist when I try to boot. I put Debian on /dev/sdb3, I loaded Linux Rescueand mounted sdb3 and verified that its menu.lst had the right boot numbers (hd1,2). fdisk even showns /dev/sdb3 as boot as shown by the asterisk under the boot column. Should I do a complete reinstall of grub, maybe using one of the other distro's as the holder of grub? At one time they did all the grub launching as each addition was made

OpenSUSE Install :: Live Usb Stick Doesn't Work - I/O Errors

Apr 21, 2011

I've been trying to figure out how to run/install openSUSE from a usb stick for several days. I downloaded the 11.4 .iso from distrowatch & used the following command in Linux Mint to put it on the usb stick.

sudo dd if=openSUSE-11.4-KDE-LiveCD-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdc

It gets to the loading screen and get stuck. It has a small bar going across, that never finishes. I've hit escape to try and get some info, but don't know what I'm looking for and it's too much to write down. I did notice there were several I/O errors. I did check the usb for defects and it returned ok, and the md5sum was correct.

I've also tried safe settings which takes me to a blueish/black screen and stays there. No ACPI starts to load and then drops to a shell.

how to get this accomplished? I've installed many Linux OS's and I've never had this much trouble.

ps. I"ve read the "please read" pre installation page on here, and things just don't make a whole lot of sense to me.

For a few minutes, my happiness was greater then ever (ehum) I installed Jedi Knight II, Jedi Outcast, and it worked. Only I couldn't adjust the screen size or the gamma (and a few other minor video settings). After some install/reinstall of playonlinux and wine I found out something: 3D acceleration didn't work any longer. glxinfo | grep "direct rendering" is now giving

direct rendering: No (LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT set) and I get the error in Playonlinux that i don't have any 3D acceleration. I want to know how this could happen? My xorg didn't change at all. But for completeness, here it is:

I found it is impossible to format partition during Ubuntu 10.04 installation.
My storage configuration is as following. 1TB (500GB X 2) AHCI RAID 0 (it is said fake raid) and covers below 4 partitions.

/dev/mapper/pdc_dgbbagea1 9621688 5872752 3260168 65% /
/dev/mapper/pdc_dgbbagea4 945587172 95673304 802259056 11% /home
/dev/mapper/pdc_dgbbagea3 9698380 1363364 7846240 15% /opt
Partition 2 is swap partition and root partition is ext3 original.

Since there is no enough space for upgrading, I try to format root partition and install a complete pure new OS. After I booting up system from Live or Alternative disk, I try to switch root partition from file system ext3 to ext4 and format it. However, Formating process always get failed after couple trying. Even I quit installation and use tools "Disk Utility" to check and adjust partition information. It reports device is busy.
