Fedora Hardware :: Wiki Page On GNOME Or List Which Graphics Cards Work On 15 With GNOME Shell?

May 26, 2011

is there some wiki page on GNOME or Fedora that list which graphics cards work without problems on Fedora 15 with GNOME Shell? I have tried 3 older cards and they all failed, so I would like to share this info with others so people know which cards to avoid if they want to use full features of GNOME 3 via GNOME Shell.

Fedora :: Wireless Driver Install In 14 GNOME

Apr 18, 2011

I'm using Fedora 14 GNOME. At least until tomorrow when 15 beta comes out Anyway, I'm trying to install drivers for my wireless card. It's a Realtek Semiconductor, RTL8191SEvB. I'm using RTL8192 drivers, which work just fine when I can get them to install. I have all of the necessary files to install it, and they've worked before on a previous Fedora 14 (KDE) install. I cd into the drive and run "sudo make" which gives me the following:

Fedora :: ATI Driver Causes Wacky Colors On Gnome 3 Top Bar In F15?

Jul 2, 2011

I recently installed Fedora 15 (64-bit), and after running yum update and updating the kernel, I installed the ATI graphics driver from the AMD website. I have an ATI Radeon 5000 series card. The driver itself seems to work ok, as my Gnome 3 still operates after reboot, but the top bar (where the activities button is) is covered in weird rainbow-like colors of green, pink, and gray. It's extremely ugly and I can't find a way to fix it. Upon reading posts by others with this problem, no solutions were brought forth. I have heard that many people with ATI cards don't have this problem, and the bar looks normal for them. I won't really be comfortable using Gnome 3 unless I can get rid of those colors.

Fedora Installation :: Software Update - Fedora (2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64) - Nvidia Driver Doesn't Work

Sep 1, 2010

Fedora (2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64) I installed that update, during the installation process it said that it had to remove three packages, one of them was kmod nvidia for the old kernel (Fedora (2.6.33.8-149.fc13.x86_64))After the update finished installing the new kernel, I restarted the system and Nvidia did not load. (I assume because Update manager removed the old nvidia? But I also assumed that a new version would be installed automatically?)I received the following Boot messages:

Code:

Entering non-interactive startup
Starting monitoring for VG vg_user1: 3 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg_user1" monitored

[code]....

I'm confused, if Update Manager removed kmod nvidia, then why does yum say it is installed? And why doesn't the new kernel update work with that version? Or should I install a driver version for that particular kernel? I've read while searching that I need to install a kmod-nvidia for that particual kernel version and that I should login to my previous kernel until that happens, is that the problem I'm having?

Why don't rpmfusion and fedoraproject release the kmod-nvidia and kernel updates at the same time to avoid problems such as this? Does anyone know how long does it usually take for rpmfusion to release the new kmod-nvidia driver for the latest kernel?

Fedora :: 10 - Kernel And ATI Driver Not Work

Dec 7, 2009

I have Fedora 12 right now, and I've come to the conclusion that the ATI catalyst drivers version 9.11 aren't going to work at all on that system, so I was going to downgrade to fedora 10 and install 9.8 or so on it. But what I was wondering is if I install Fedora 10 and then upgrade the kernel will that make the ATI drivers not work? Do I need to turn automatic updates off?

Fedora :: How To Get Opensource Driver To Work

Jun 2, 2011

I think I've one of the badest configurations to use fc15 and gnome-shell. I run a AMD HD 6950 and I have these bugs in gnome-shell (e.g. rainbow color, corrupt icons, ..) with the official AMD fglrx driver.As I can see, the opensource ATI driver only supports cayman based gpu (like mine) if using a 2.6.39 kernel. Mine is a 2.6.38.6-27.fc15.x86_64, so I don't get any support.Any ideas how to get the opensource driver to work and fix these ugly gnome-shell bugs?Shell I install the 2.6.39 Kernel from FC16?I really like the new gnome-shell and got used to it on my thinkpad x61s, so I like to use it on my workstation, too.

Fedora :: Get The VBox Video Driver To Work In FC12?

Feb 28, 2010

Host: CentOS 5.4 x32
Guest: FC12 x32
Virtual machine: Virtual Box (VBox) 3.1.4

The 640 x 480 video display on my FC12 guest is driving me nuts! The VBox Guest Additions are installed. How do I get FC12 to recognize the VBox video driver?

Extra information:

Auto resize works great on my Windows guests. On FC12, I just get a lot of extra white space.

FC12's installer does not detect a video card. You have to use the stand display option (second one down) to get FC12 to go into a full graphical installer. If you use the regular install, hoping to do a graphical install, FC 12 only install the bare basics. No video support. You get what looks like a rescue cd. No Gnone, no X etc.

I do believe that FC12 has no idea that the VBox's fake video adapter even exists.

Fedora Hardware :: Way To Get Both Monitors To Work With Nouveau Driver?

Nov 4, 2010

I have two monitors - one connected to the VGA port and the other to the DVI port. Fedora seems to be detecting both monitors (figured this out because when I rotate the desktop cube, the second screen is also seen.). However, the monitor on the DVI port is blank. This happens even if I use just one monitor with the DVI port. I cannot install the proprietary nvidia drivers because my computer hangs (has been happening since fedora 11 or 10), Is there a way to get both monitors to work with the nouveau driver?

I faced this problem in Fedora 13 as well and was hoping both screens would work out of the box in F14. Is there any way I can do this to make it work like nvidia's TwinView?

Fedora :: Installing NVidia's Driver With Their Shellscript But It Didn't Work

Jan 10, 2011

I'm trying Fedora for the first time. I tried installing NVidia's driver with their shellscript but it didn't work for lots of reasons. Has anyone done this before?:[URL].. Does it work? I never used a distro with a package manager before. Aren't there several different drivers for different NVidia cards? How do the instructions in that link make you get the correct driver? And then does it create an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?

EDIT: or is the Neaveau driver good enough already? I can't figure out if it's basically a finished product or not.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: RTL8191SE Driver On Compaq Presario CQ62 Doesn't Work With XP Driver

Oct 23, 2010

No wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.

However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.

I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.

Fedora :: Nautilus Doesn't Work After Switching From KDE To GNOME

Jan 20, 2010

I recently switched my desktop environment from KDE-4.3.4 to GNOME-2.28-2 and I did that by installing most of the gnome-packages and uninstalling pretty much all of the kde-ones. After reboot everything worked fine except the file browser that doesn't seem to care about my feelings. It launches and when I try to kill the process the status changes from sleeping to uninterruptible and then back to sleeping. The only way is to reboot but that isn't a solution.Error while sending message: Did not receive a reply. Fedora Hardware :: HP Printer - HPLIP Driver In The Repo Doesn't Work Correctly

Apr 22, 2010

I recently had problems with my HP printer in Fedora 12, where as I never had a problem with it in any other distrubution.... For some reason, the HPLIP driver in the repo doesn't work correctly... I don't know why... but I kept getting errors with "error: Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again."

I tried every suggestion I found... which was installing extra dependencies, disabling firewall, disabling SELinux and a whole bunch of other stuff... but nothing worked... THEN finally I decided to use the HPLIP driver from the HP website... it was a .run file... and I executed it, and my printer has worked perfect eversince..... my question is.... has anybody successfully installed their hp printer from the hplip driver in the repo's..??? I don't know why it didn't work for me, and i've seen other fedora users complain of the same thing? maybe theres something wrong with the package? or its not pulling in a needed dependency? I don't know...

Fedora :: Gnome Timed Login Doesn't Work On Fresh 13 Install?

Jul 28, 2010

I just installed Fedora 13 on a new computer and the timed login for gnome does not work unless you manually select it. This surprised me as I upgraded a separate computer to Fedora 13 and the timed login feature still correctly functions and does not require user interaction.

Code:
[daemon]
TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=<username>
TimedLoginDelay=3

Adding the above to /etc/gdm/custom.conf only adds an Automatic Login option that you have to manually select and then the computer will login. I would deem this less than useful.

Code:
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=<username>

I know you can substitute the timed login with the automatic login and it will instantly login, but this provides no option to select another user. I have been unable to find any information why this feature no longer works and wanted to know if there is a new way or if anyone knows why the timed login feature was crippled.
