Hardware :: ATI Drivers Forget Setting On Reboot In Fedora 14
May 3, 2011
I have recently installed Fedora 14 onto my primary desktop which is equipped with an ATI Radeon HD 3870 graphics adapter and two monitors. Following the instructions here I have installed the ATI proprietary drivers via the akmod method recommended by the author. If I run the Catalyst Control Center via either su- or sudo to configure the desktops and log out/in to restart X everything works flawlessly. However, whenever I restart the computer the displays return to the default setting of a simple clone. Possibly related is that the system defaults to Fedora's "simple" text based start up/shut down screen rather than the pretty graphical one. I am confused as to why/how this could be happening and cannot find anything similar via Google, though I readily admit I may be using the wrong search terms. All potentially relevant information I can think of:
akmod-catalyst xorg-x11-drv-catalyst xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-libs
All are at version 11.2 and release 1.fc14. I also caught that the guide was would have me specify the 32 bit version of xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-libs rather than the 64 bit version I needed. I dropped the specification entirely and let yum sort out the architecture.

I change the audio channels to 6 in alsamixer by choosing my sound card and change the channels to '6ch'. But this setting is not preserved. I see that after a reboot the channels are again going back to 2ch. I have to manually change everytime to 6ch after each reboot. Is there a way to save the setting in alsamixer so that I will get 6ch everytime after reboot? I am not sure I have explained my problem in a way so that you can understand.

Windows XP SP3 on a Dell Optiplex 755 less than a year old. The user is left handed and therefore swaps the mouse buttons in Control Panel - Mouse. For some reason that setting is not retained over a reboot. I've loaded the registry hive for that user and checked the setting and it is correct before the user logs on but somehow gets reset at login.

I have an Nvidia GT9600 card and want to load the Nvidia drivers. As per the 1 click install I set nomodeset and installed the drivers from 1 click. On reboot, well there was'nt a reboot just got a blank monitor, no BIOS screen, nothing. After stuffing around with my system for about 1 hour clearing CMOS and unplugging and re-plugging just about everything I managed to get my system back.I do not like the New Neuoveaux (or however you spell it) Graphics drivers, get some wierd artifacts on my monitor?

We see posts here occasionally with complaints like, "my PC doesn't finish booting; it goes so far, then I get a black screen." There will follow the usual suggestions to check the video drivers, or if it's a new installation, to check the DVD MD5 checksum, etc., etc.
I suggest checking the hardware as well, especially if you haven't made any changes recently. If your PC seems to have been running normally for quite a while, and this is a problem that has only recently (and relatively suddenly) popped up, check the connections. Make sure the RAM is seated properly. (This is especially important if the PC has been moved around recently.)
But most of all, check for dust buildup! We had a PC yesterday that started shutting down after about 3-4 minutes. This morning, it was a lot colder in the shop, so it lasted almost 5-6 minutes -- and that was our clue. My assistant tore into the machine and didn't see anything obvious; he then removed the fan over the CPU heatsink and saw a ton of dust. (On this particular PC, the fan obscured direct observation of the heatsink fins.)

I originally performed an xubuntu install on my laptop and did not like the xfce desktop so I remove the xfce4 desktop and install the ubuntu desktop. All is fine except for when I want to customize my desktop, no matter what I do, gnome will not rememeber the changes that I made to the desktop. The minute I reboot the laptop it forgets all the changes that I did to it. So in other words any changes like adding stuff to the panel or links to the desktop the minute a reboot is done is resorts back to the defaults.

who installed nvidia drivers on Ubuntu 10.04 and gets a terminal screen on reboot with no GUI.I came across this fix trying to install the drivers on Ubuntu 10.10. later i find that the same thing happens to me on 10.04 but one of the fixes i came across works perfect with it. Ok, so you just installed ubuntu 10.04 updated it through update manager and installed your nvidia drivers but when you rebooted and tried to log on you find yourself in a terminal interface well i found an easy fix for that.
i hope it works for you not saying it will though im new to the linux world only just coming out of windows and i dont know much anyways just log on the terminal and use command "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" then run nvidia-xconfig command reboot and you should be fine only wish this would work for ubuntu 10.10

I've recently installed Kubuntu 10.10 on my Acer Aspire One ZG5 netbook. Everything works pretty well and I'm enjoying it so far. One problem - I have a Lexmark S405 inkjet printer - for which I installed drivers the other day. The install goes fine and the printer does work - but upon next boot, there is an error loading Kate - and then some sort of script editor pops up. Uninstalling the driver package seems to fix the error message but it's back upon re-install. Didn't have this with my Ubuntu VM on my desktop. The printer does still work.

i'm trying to add windows print drivers to smb for them to be automatically downloaded to the client upon printer installation. I've followed the samba.org Printing documents which have been helpful to some degree. I have an HP printer and i'd like to just upload and register the .inf,.dll.cab files that the manufacture cd comes with for the client to use the .inf file to install the drivers from that location but i keep getting Werr_invalid_PARAM
here is the syntax of what i'm trying to do.
rpcclient -d 4 -U 'username%password' -c 'adddriver "Windows NT x86"
"HP_Color_LaserJet_3800:hpbicoin.dll:hpc3800c.inf:hpc3800c.cat:hpc3800c.cab:hpcp3800.cf_6i2arww.cab6i2caww.cab6i2csww.cab' Server

When I am copying from DVD to my comp - Dolphin copies some files and directories and some did not. I have to check what was copied and what was ommited and fix the bad copying by copying again. The DVD is okay, it is perfectly readable. There is also plenty of memory around (8 GB). The behavior is new in Jessie, Dolphin in Wheezy used to work flawlessly.
I have met this strange behavior after copying archived data to my new Debian installation. The copyings were "huge tasks", for example 2000 files, more than 1GB total. "Small tasks" seem to copy okay. Nevertheless, the danger or missing files is annoying. What to do?

Before 2.6.35-23 released this packages is present in the system:
i A linux-headers-2.6.35-22
i A linux-headers-2.6.35-22-generic
i A linux-image-2.6.35-22-generic
But after automatic update to 2.6.35-23 updater install just linux-image-2.6.35-23-generic without headers. In result kernel modules of nVidia driver not compiled and next boot X server can not start.
Now I can install 2.6.35-24 image and headers by hands, but how to explain updater not forget to update headers next time and why this problem occurs?

Ok this is one of those questions that have probably been made often. But I just CANNOT find a way around this on Fedora, and i have searched for it alot. Basically, after remotely rebooting my server, i'm not able to connect through vnc because the server needs to login. I've looked into an automatic login, but this is not the way i want to go. Edit: I'm using the default fedora vnc server, and RealVNC on my Windows computer. Been to ##linux on freenode, but at the time, noone there could answer me either.

It seems now that I get updates sometimes 3 to 6 times per week and it always has an icon to reboot !! I can't run a stable web server/DNS/email/NAS server if I have to reboot every day !! Why is every update requiring a reboot now ?

At the end of preupgrade & upgrade a reboot was called for. After reboot, the only choice that appears in the boot screen is ... Upgrade to Fedora 12 (Constantine). The only thing to edit after typing 'e' is ... kernel /upgrade/vmlinuz preupgrade Repo=HD::/var/cache/yum/preupgrade->
initrd /upgrade/initrd.img
If I allow it to boot to "Upgrade" it tries to do a fresh install.
P.S. This was a lot of typing to do on an IPhone

Unbeknown to us our son removed the battery and I unplugged the power cord. Instant off! Since then I can't restart. The error is very lengthy but each Control-D brings a reboot but the same sticking point. If I understand correctly I am asked to run setenforce as root. I did this and it does each separate file. How many will I have to do? Is there another way to restart?
