How do I use apt-get or aptitude to tell me what updated packages are available for my system? I'm moving over from Gentoo where I had a cron job that would run a command whose output was a list of available updates. I had this and other system related info emailed to me. I'd like to duplicate that under Ubuntu, but I can't find a way get the available updates.

If I use the aptitude GUI and type Ctrl-T and then arrow over to the search option and type in "nethack" and hit Enter, the only option that I see is nethack-spoilers. Why do I not see all of the other nethack options?

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

E: Broken packages
(before do this, I have used command apt-get update and apt-get upgrade)

Seems like always if I add a package with apt-get, next time I use aptitude to update packages on a server, the packages I added with apt-get are automatically marked for removal.
I must, in aptitude, "forget new packages" and "cancel pending actions" then update the package list, remark packages needing updating, THEN aptitude has forgotten it wanted to remove packages.
Why can aptitude and apt-get NOT get along!?
Currently I have 10.04 on all servers, thus where it still is a problem.
I am just too tired and am missing something in the man pages for aptitude and not getting my search terms right but I can't seem to find a way to make aptitude ignore a couple of supposed broken packages (they work just fine by the way). The only way I can find to remidy the situation is to remove those couple of packages or upgrade several things to their Squeeze counter parts. I really don't want to try and do the upgrade as at home I am stuck on a 56k connection. Removing the broken packages I guess won't be too bad if I can find the debs again after I install a couple of things I want to add to my system. I would however just like to make aptitude ignore the state of my system and try to install what I want anyway.

I've got a strange problem with my last "aptitude safe-upgrade". It had removed all my kde 4.3 and packages I have installed, I don't know why!
This is what aptitude removed :

I reinstalled kde-full (kde 4) but now with an aptitude safe-upgrade or dist-upgrade. It wants to remove my debian-multimedia keyrings and my wine-unstable and others each time.

I am new to Debian (just used Gentoo until now), I run a little server for our company and clients. Unfortunately our hosting company switched us from a Gentoo system to a Debian Lenny box with Confixx and stopped maintaining it. So I will need to do the house keeping, which worries me a bit. Today I started and ran: aptitude update && aptitude safe-upgrade and got a huge list with packages to upgrade. Unfortunately, I am not confident, if I will break something upgrading (Confixx, apache) as I get the following warning message:
WARNING: untrusted versions of the following packages will be installed!
Untrusted packages could compromise your system's security.
You should only proceed with the installation if you are certain that this is what you want to do.
mysql-client mysql-server-5.1 mysql-client-5.1 mysql-common mysql-server-core-5.1 mysql-server libmysqlclient16
Do you want to ignore this warning and proceed anyway?
Is it safe to ignore it and upgrade the needed packages?
I use Jessie, with the Aptitude curses interface for package management. It seems that every time I successfully uninstall/purge a package (along with its dependencies), then the next time I try to install/uninstall anything else it wants to reinstall that package (and its dependencies). It takes several (I haven't counted) "don't install" instructions from me before it will forget about it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had been doing some removal of packages, and things went well, or so I thought. Now whenever I try and install any package using aptitude, some old state is lingering around and wants me to install packages that I do not want, and remove some packages that I am not sure about removing (did I actually select those to be removed??) I removed libvirt etc, and now it wants to come back? Also, like I mentioned, why remove those other four packages?

Today I ran
aptitude update && aptitude safe-upgrade
Like I regularly do, and I see these two packages need to be upgraded:
login passwd
Since these packages seem kinda security-sensitive I would like to know exactly why I would need to upgrade them. I checked Debian's security list but couldn't find anything relevant, and the links to the changelog for both packages are broken:
The requested URL /changelogs/pool/main/s/shadow/shadow_4.1.4.2+svn3283-2+squeeze1/changelog was not found on this server.
Where can I see what is changed in these packages so I can safely upgrade?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI originally performed an xubuntu install on my laptop and did not like the xfce desktop so I remove the xfce4 desktop and install the ubuntu desktop. All is fine except for when I want to customize my desktop, no matter what I do, gnome will not rememeber the changes that I made to the desktop. The minute I reboot the laptop it forgets all the changes that I did to it. So in other words any changes like adding stuff to the panel or links to the desktop the minute a reboot is done is resorts back to the defaults.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWe see posts here occasionally with complaints like, "my PC doesn't finish booting; it goes so far, then I get a black screen." There will follow the usual suggestions to check the video drivers, or if it's a new installation, to check the DVD MD5 checksum, etc., etc.
I suggest checking the hardware as well, especially if you haven't made any changes recently. If your PC seems to have been running normally for quite a while, and this is a problem that has only recently (and relatively suddenly) popped up, check the connections. Make sure the RAM is seated properly. (This is especially important if the PC has been moved around recently.)
But most of all, check for dust buildup! We had a PC yesterday that started shutting down after about 3-4 minutes. This morning, it was a lot colder in the shop, so it lasted almost 5-6 minutes -- and that was our clue. My assistant tore into the machine and didn't see anything obvious; he then removed the fan over the CPU heatsink and saw a ton of dust. (On this particular PC, the fan obscured direct observation of the heatsink fins.)

I have recently installed Fedora 14 onto my primary desktop which is equipped with an ATI Radeon HD 3870 graphics adapter and two monitors. Following the instructions here I have installed the ATI proprietary drivers via the akmod method recommended by the author. If I run the Catalyst Control Center via either su- or sudo to configure the desktops and log out/in to restart X everything works flawlessly. However, whenever I restart the computer the displays return to the default setting of a simple clone. Possibly related is that the system defaults to Fedora's "simple" text based start up/shut down screen rather than the pretty graphical one. I am confused as to why/how this could be happening and cannot find anything similar via Google, though I readily admit I may be using the wrong search terms. All potentially relevant information I can think of:
akmod-catalyst xorg-x11-drv-catalyst xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-libs
All are at version 11.2 and release 1.fc14. I also caught that the guide was would have me specify the 32 bit version of xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-libs rather than the 64 bit version I needed. I dropped the specification entirely and let yum sort out the architecture.

When I am copying from DVD to my comp - Dolphin copies some files and directories and some did not. I have to check what was copied and what was ommited and fix the bad copying by copying again. The DVD is okay, it is perfectly readable. There is also plenty of memory around (8 GB). The behavior is new in Jessie, Dolphin in Wheezy used to work flawlessly.
I have met this strange behavior after copying archived data to my new Debian installation. The copyings were "huge tasks", for example 2000 files, more than 1GB total. "Small tasks" seem to copy okay. Nevertheless, the danger or missing files is annoying. What to do?
Whenever I do sudo apt-get or use the Ubuntu Software Center, I can't download anything because a message comes up saying "Action requires installation of untrusted packages: The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." I've been trying to download GIMP and Thunderbird, so... I dunno what the problem is.
View 8 Replies View RelatedIs there a way using dpkg or apt-get to segregate user application packages from system packages? What I envision is an /apps directory structure that can be the install target for selected packages so not to "clutter" the storage areas for the system administration files/packages - maybe even with permissions set so that (a GROUP of) users could install packages on an Ubuntu server w/o SysAdmin guidance. This could also allow 1)system upgrades with or w/o including these packages, and 2)the sharing of /apps (via NFS) among common Ubuntu systems. Is this doable using the dpkg or apt maintenance tools?
