Why does it seem now I have to reboot after EVERY update ? I have been a Fedora user for YEARS !! I am on Fedora 11. It seems now that I get updates sometimes 3 to 6 times per week and it always has an icon to reboot !! I can't run a stable web server/DNS/email/NAS server if I have to reboot every day !! Why is every update requiring a reboot now ?

I just updated from FC 10 to FC 12 via install/upgrade disk, and when re-booted the screen is then black (at the point that it should display logins). I think it may be due to nvidia driver in FC 10 not being upgraded, because I think I compiled it from nvidia rather from yum install. Anybody else have this problem? BTW, it is a dual boot with Win XP, but has never caused a similar problem before.

I just got an update that installed, and after a reboot I've got one core at 100%. The "you need to restart" icon in the notification tray said "glibc glibc glibc glibc nscd". Now that I look at it, It's switching between both cored. This behavior is consistent over multiple full reboots as well as kexec reboots.
Edit: Strange, just when I finished, the CPU load settled out and now everything is fine. I wonder what was going on. I'm rebooting right now to double check. Edit2: Yep, same issue 100% usage on one core. And it probably will level out soon. I'm not sure what could be causing this. I assume that glibc could be the issue.
After a recent update and reboot, I can no longer access the internet. Typing google.com in firefox or elinks results in firefox/links complaining about the server not found. However, I can find the server by using dig on the command line. I have checked the DNS configuration in resolve.conf and it is exactly the same as on a RHEL 5 system connects fine. The strange thing is, I can connect to other local machines in my domain just fine but can not connect to any other machine on the internet on this one Fedora 12 host even though I can on all other machines!

View 10 Replies View Relatedfedora 14 did an automatic update and on reboot it hangs displaying the "f" before the login menu. The "f" is how I now feel......... I do "fn+f2" as it is booting and it displays the sequence of loading items which report all is "ok" until it gets to "jexec services" and then it hangs. I beleive the "jexec service" is a Sun Java item but I am not sure. I have been using Fedora successfully for a number of months and need to get data from the machine.

My server keeps displaying a message: "The computer needs to restart to finish installing updates. Please save your work before continuing" every time I log on. Last night I did four consecutive reboots but the message is still there. I log i remote with NX / Gnome. Synpatic shows "0 to install/update 0 to remove".Is this normal? Does every single update need an independent reboot, so there is a queue to catch up with? Or is there some reboot flag that is not resetting properly after reboot?

What happens is, after the splash screen, both screens goes black and unresponsive. Tried killing X and alt + ctrl + f1 etc. I can probably fix this myself if I could access the terminal but, the other day I had to be stylish and remove everything from my grub boot besides Windows 7 and the default Ubuntu so I can't boot into root terminal. So, how would I gain access to a console before X starts?

latest update to 11.3 a complete failure afterwards on reboot I'm instructed that I must first install kernel and to strike any key to exit which return me to grub menu. thats it for me and Osuse. 11.3 has been one bug after another and to much for me overcome. I will return once a day to see if anyone can fix this/

All went OK but I had two boot loaders, i.e. turn on laptop and I would get the Windows loader asking if I want to boot in to windows or Ubuntu. Upon selecting ubuntu I would get the standard grub loader that I have on my PC. Did an update a few mins ago and it asked me to update grub which I did and as there was only one disk showing clicked forward. Now on reboot I have grub rescue prompt, no such device. Hard drive is a single 80 gig drive with windows on one partition and ubuntu in another. Have the live cd so can boot from that I guess. What do I do next?

So far I have been unsuccessful in persuading it to connect. ifconfig shows the existence of the ethernet connection as eth0, and Network Manager also seems to accept the existence of the ethernet port - so why has it suddenly chosen now to stop connecting to the wired network?

When I rebooted, my desktop loaded as normal, but then when I try to open the terminal (from Applications -> Accessories or from my quick launch panel), nothing happens other than the quick launch panel disappears for a second then reappears. This is the case for most other apps, but not for Chrome (obviously).
EDIT: Used Alt+F2 to open the terminal, ran safe upgrade and then rebooted, but still having the same issue. As Ubuntu was booting, there was a "Broken pipe" message, which didn't stop the boot process but is still a bit worrying. I've run a file system check but this hasn't resolved the problem either.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried to update my main computer from Ubuntu 10.0 to 11.04. I wish I could remember what it said, but it crashed during the update. The lights on the keyboard were flashing on and off as well. When I try to boot, all I get is a black screen and flashing lights. The Ubuntu recover also has the same thing. I am going to try a fresh install. For some reason I am leaning to the power manager, but I am no where near sure.

This has to be the sixth time I am going to have to reinstall Ubuntu (Can't get enough of that Linux greatness) in the past 6 months. I just don't understand what exactly is wrong, I don't install anything extra (but the ubuntu restricted extras) yet updates that ask me to reboot will take me to a GRUB command line screen and trying to boot through the command line interface gives me an, "Invalid Magic Number", error.
There should be an official tool for when problems like this come up, so that users like me can easily move their files off their HDD before reinstalling. I didn't come here to rant but, does anyone know what may be causing this everytime, how it can be avoided maybe even how to deal with the Magic Number error and boot in (I wouldn't mind typing in the commands every time BTW)?

i have installed ubuntu 9.10 on my hp nx6325 notebook, and everything was working just fine, then it updated and problem started coming up. First the computer wouldn't reboot after the update, blank screen, then i manually reboted and now some programs don't work (ubuntu software center, update maneger, avant window navigator)
i assume the update did some damage, so how can i repair this, is there a recovery tool or something.

I have a new acer machine which runs fine on 10.10 mythbuntu desktop livecd. Install seemed fine.
Then I ran an update and on reboot I get a kernel panic error. Research on this reveals it as a very deep subject which can consume many hours, so I opted to reinstall.
This time with ubuntu 10.10. I've tried different CDs, liveusb. Same errors.
So, the question is this - where do I concentrate my efforts - somewhere ubuntu doesn't like this machine, or grub. Does a reinstall overwrite the grub install too? Or do I have a bogus grub install I need to purge before I will get anywhere.

I just reinstalled my OpenSuse 11.3 with the GNOME desktop. As soon as I was done installing and I was on a fresh desktop, I installed the Yast updates that were available, rebooted, and now I can't login to any of my User accounts. This auto update also seems to issue an auto reboot on the machine, which is unacceptable on server machines.
