Since I have a laptop hp compaq nx9010 (Ubuntu 10.10) equipped with a parallel port I thought maybe I could take that into use. Question is: How? Jul 11, 2010I just received a Canon Pixma MX320 as a gift.
I am currently running the Ubuntu 10.04 OS
I was able to get the printer up and running by downloading the printer driver for debian linux (3.1) from the Canon site without any problems.
Unfortunately I am not having the same luck with the scanner.
I tried downloading ScanGear MP for Linux (deb) (1.3) from the same Canon site but have not yet been able to get the XSane Image Scanner to recognize this scanner driver for my Canon.

I'm on a laptop, and the printer/scanner is wifi enabled and broadcasts with its own IP address. I can print with no problem, but xsane and simple scan don't recognize the scanner. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.

Could not send command to scanner. Check scanner's status.
After command sane-find-scanner:

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

Sep 23, 2010Recently got a Canon Canoscan 8800F after looking it up on the SANE site and said it was completely supported for Linux.
I have downloaded the pixma drivers and have compiled the command line program, but it can't find the scanner.
lsusb returns a Canon scanner Bus 001 Device 005: ID 04a9:1901 Canon, Inc.
and sane-find-scanner returns:found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x1901 [CanoScan]) at libusb:001:005
but scanimage -L (under my user login or sudo) returns only the webcam. No other scanner found.
My system is running Linux Mint 7, ia64 kernel 2.6.28-11-generic

Sep 7, 2010I've installed XSane Image Scanner. When I first opened it, it searched for my scanner and didn't give any error messages, and it had my scanner model in the heading of the scan window. But when I hit the scan button, it gave me saying, "Failed to start scanner: error during device I/O.I closed everything, and opened XSane again. This time it said there was no scanner available. The scanner is plugged into the USB port and uses that for both power and data. It's a Canoscan Model N650U.

i intall hplip with synaptic in order to setup my scanner, printer is working, i dont need the fax, but the scanner is not working with xsane.
normal user and sudo see the scanner with

May 18, 2011i have a lot of text files, PDF's, CHM's that i need to arrange for easier access. right now i'm just "filing" them in directories. I tried to use Calibre but it's designed to use with eReaders, exporting to ebook formats. The biggest annoyance with Calibre is that it won't open the document with it's related application (PDF with a pdf reader, CHM with Chmsee and so on), but rather open a link in the browser.

Jul 26, 2010I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).
Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.
My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.

Sep 10, 2010Running openSuse 11.3 32 bit clean default KDE install.
When opening documents(Write, Calc, Impress?) in OpenOffice 3.2.1 there is a 7 to 10 second pause between when the document is displayed on screen and when any mouse action takes effect. This is not a document size issue, these are small documents with minimal formatting; one or two pages. Also, the system has ample horsepower and is not resource constrained.
Clicking on a writer.odt file, from within Dolphin, results in the following events: Open Office.Org(ooo) splash screen displays with progress bar zipping across for a couple of seconds. The document appears on screen. For the next 7 - 10 seconds, clicking in the document or clicking ooo menu items or anything else results in nothing happening. Actions outside of ooo work fine. ooo simply freezes for the 7 or so seconds and then everything returns to normal operation.
As a test I tried opening Writer with the default blank document. I started typing immediately after the blank document was displayed. I typed Te and then it froze for several seconds before displaying the final two characters st As before, once past this first few seconds, everything is fine.

If I continue my repo list and software management both come up okay and function as they should (nothing noted yet anyway). Is this just something that glitched when adding the Packman repo and the file repoindex.xml[1] should be deleted?

convert *png output.pdf
The problem with this is that each image is then stretched to fit on one page, whereas I would like to keep the original dimensions of the images and put as many as possible on one page in the PDF file before moving on to another page.

Some time ago, I was helped on these forums to get a Brother MFC-640CW printer/scanner to work by downloading the relevant drivers from the Brother website. Although the printer works fine, when I attempt to scan something into the computer nothing happens. A pop up box appears on screen when the printer is used with an XP OS. Can anybody suggest a way to get the scanner working?

Feb 23, 2010I recently have a need to get my HP ScanJet 5590 working. Never used it in suse, only in the old windoze daze. Running opensuse 11.2, kde 4.3.4 quite nicely.
When I dusted the scanner off (USB) and plugged it in and fired it up, then went into Yast, scanner, it correctly recognized the scanner by model, but the driver line has Not configured: in front of the driver info. And, it will not do a test scan, nor do any apps see the scanner. As far as I can see all the dependencies are installed, I just need to configure the scanner. But I can't find any place in Yast to do that, nor do I have a clue what command line would work.

Sep 21, 2009I am just spent half an hour hunting for a thing that should be totally available already:USB install images of Ubuntu, knoppix and all the others.And, the only good way are so far complicated tutorials where you extract the stuff from an CD image. Why??Hasn't everybody notices that CDs/DVDs are vanishing big time? That more and more systems don't have the readers anymore? Instead of following a 10 point instruction list, it would be nice to just be able to download a Ubuntu 8.10 or whatever USB image and be able to beam that DIRECTLY to a USB stick with a dd command.
Or am a missing something here? Does this exist?It should by no means be mariginal, considering how important USB stick in specific and flash memory in general have become.

It will be preferable if it can be installed by yast2.
