It even doesn't return the $USER variable.Following is what I got:

Hostname: Borg
OS: Lucid Lynx
Kernel: 2.6.32-24
Problem:
1. borg > xhost +
2. borg > ssh <anyuser>@<anyhost>
3. anyhost > export DISPLAY:<borg's IP>:0.0
4. xclock
NOTHING HAPPENS!!!! Any ideas? Here is what I have tried thus far.
Efforts:
1. gdmsetup - looked for security tab, doesn't exist
2. installed gdm2setup - still not there
3. looked for gdm.conf - not there
4. when doing ps -ef|grep X - there is a -nolisten tcp "could this be culprit" hmm not sure
5. modified /etc/ssh/ssh_config to Forward X

I'm having trouble displaying Xwindows programs on a remote machine. If I run "ssh -X newmachine" and I login and then run a program like xclock, I get the error message:
Error: Can't open display: localhost:10.0
If I run the same command to an anothermachine which is running Ubuntu 8.04 it works fine and xclock displays on my localmachine. If I run the command "echo $DISPLAY" on newmachine, I see:
localhost:10.0
Also, I have checked and xauth is installed on newmachine. What setting I have to change on Ubuntu 10.04 to allow remote display of Xwindows programs?

I recently dist-upgraded from Debian 5 to 6 (squeeze). Since then, the xclock I run from my window manager's start script isn't displaying correctly (it displays only a "0"). The thing is, if I run the same command in my start script in my terminal, it works just fine, as it has always done...
I use this rather "old" X applications because I like my programs simple/not buggy/fast, and it's resulting a rather annoying problem (being that apparently nobody else has it...).
All other programs in my start script (gnome-terminal, emacs, xmodmap, etc) are working with no problems whatsoever.
My window manager: sawfish
Command to run xclock in my start script:
Code:
xclock -digital -brief -geometry -0+0
Attached picture:
Top: xclock initialized by start script
Bottom: xclock initialized by terminal

I want to use sed to comment out a certain command in a js file. The command is called processLoad(..). I came up with expression below but it doesn't do what I expect it to do. The computer that I am on belongs to my provider, so I do not know the version of linux that is running on the machine.
[added:]
sed -r -i 's_^([ ]+processLoad.*)$_//1_' test.txt
I hope to replace a line:
processLoad('mystr');
into
// processLoad('mystr')
I figured out that '/' as substitute separation character would pose problems with the // as comments, so I choose _ as substitute separation character.

I'm having trouble geting twitcam on the linux version of firefox to work.
Accordingly to
[URL] -> Test your Adobe Flash Player installation
I have flash version 10.0.45.2 which is the latest flash version as of 5/13/10 (I installed it yesterday). When I go to
[URL]
-> Broadcast Live (big red button at bottom)
-> [login to twitter account]
The right side, which has the online chat, works fine. On the left side, which has the video, the top says
Click here to authorize Flash to access your camera and microphone
and the bottom says
Adobe Flash Player Settings Camera and Microphone Access static.livestream.com is requesting access to your camera and microphone. If you click Allow, you may be recorded.
If I click "Click here" or "Allow", nothing happens. Nothing responds on the left side.
Is this
- a linux firefox bug
- a linux flash bug
- twitcam is using a window OS feature
- or what?
Is there any workaround?
Fyi, the webcam works just fine for cheese (linux "self" camera program). Also the lspci data for this 701 eee laptop is

If you have a working webcam, can you try twitcam? On twitcam site, click Broadcast Live, login your twitter account and try to start the flash video.
Btw, I can not get thru on the Adobe flash forum with either firefox or opera using the latest flash version on the desktop or laptop.

I think i'm missing some magical components that will let mp3's play. it's very quiet right now and it's kind of unnerving.. my stereo's gone and i really don't have much music in formats that my computer will play. I ran a search and i guess my question was so basic no one else had trouble with it :/

I am using opensuse 11.2 on my dell studio 14 laptop and to my surprise the key combination for bringing up text based console does not function as expected.when I press ctrl+alt+ fn keys I am greeted with a blank screen and ctrl+alt+F7 brings me back to the GUI plasma desktop.Does this have to do something with the acpi=off thing I did for booting successfully into linux ( without this option, the screen would go off and not respond to anything ... physical restart was the only option). although my system starts off without any fuss, OS does not detect the battery of my laptop.

After waiting about a week compiling updates for this gentoo box (684 to be exact) only to have the whole distro crap out over conflicting glibc, portage, python, and gcc versions and bugs I decided to give up on gentoo. However I saw an even more interesting linux distro called "tinycore" on the net.So I burned an iso and properly burned it to a CD. The CD is fine because it loads perfectly on another machine. The distro will load to a command line just fine but when trying to start the gui it freezes with a small X in the middle of the screen. After waiting minutes for something to happen I restarted the laptop.
Its got an Intel 852/855GME onboard video that seems to be causing the problem while it works with every other linux distro just fine. Err... Well the vesa driver works just fine on every other distro. The i915 driver takes some major work to get it working but it can be done.I think tinycore uses Xvesa while other linux distros use Xorg... Could this be a problem?I couldn't find anybody else (via google) having problems with no video in tinycore so I thought I might ask for help here.

I am really not very experienced with linux and have only just started working off the command line in windows as well.
I know the basics but I am trying to install R-1 and I was having a lot of difficulties and figured out that it was that xinetd was not running.
So I tried to run it service xinetd start and it said unecognized service so then I installed xinetd and there was already a xinetd.d directory with all of the processes i needed with the .conf file but so when i run xinetd -d
Code:
My xinetd.conf file looks like this:
Code:
# All service files are stored in the /etc/xinetd.d directory
#
includedir /etc/xinetd.d
# End /etc/xinetd
EOF
This is what one of the files in xinetd.d looks like
Code:
I need to get xinetd running so that i can finish installing R-1.

I cannot figure out how to "install" a program I downloaded. It comes in Windows, Mac, and Linux flavors, and I did acquire the Linux version, which comes in a ZIP file. After I unzip it and cd to the directory it is in, I had an earlier version working a few months ago, but cannot recall how I made it work back then.
