Ubuntu :: Lucid - Cannot Display Xclock On Remote Machine

Jul 23, 2010

I'm having trouble displaying Xwindows programs on a remote machine. If I run "ssh -X newmachine" and I login and then run a program like xclock, I get the error message:
Error: Can't open display: localhost:10.0

If I run the same command to an anothermachine which is running Ubuntu 8.04 it works fine and xclock displays on my localmachine. If I run the command "echo $DISPLAY" on newmachine, I see:
localhost:10.0

Also, I have checked and xauth is installed on newmachine. What setting I have to change on Ubuntu 10.04 to allow remote display of Xwindows programs?

Efforts:

3. looked for gdm.conf - not there

4. when doing ps -ef|grep X - there is a -nolisten tcp "could this be culprit" hmm not sure

General :: Display The Source Machine During A Remote X Session In The Title Bar?

Aug 8, 2011

In the past, when I open a gvim session on a remote machine, the title bar of gvim would show the machine name in brackets. I am not sure if this was done by the remote gvim itself, or the local window manager. In the past I have used gnome2, although I am currently using unity (and finding it rather frustrating). Is there some setting I can change to always force remote windows to display the source machine?

Software :: Xclock Running From Start Script Doesn't Display Correctly?

Feb 21, 2011

I recently dist-upgraded from Debian 5 to 6 (squeeze). Since then, the xclock I run from my window manager's start script isn't displaying correctly (it displays only a "0"). The thing is, if I run the same command in my start script in my terminal, it works just fine, as it has always done...

I use this rather "old" X applications because I like my programs simple/not buggy/fast, and it's resulting a rather annoying problem (being that apparently nobody else has it...).
All other programs in my start script (gnome-terminal, emacs, xmodmap, etc) are working with no problems whatsoever.

My window manager: sawfish

Command to run xclock in my start script:

Code:
xclock -digital -brief -geometry -0+0
Attached picture:
Top: xclock initialized by start script
Bottom: xclock initialized by terminal

stoli: xhost+
stoli: rlogin espresso
espresso: setenv DISPLAY stoli:0.0

Ubuntu :: Control TTY On Remote Machine Via SSH

Jun 19, 2011

I'm wondering if it's possible to control a TTY on a remote machine via SSH. I'm aware of ssh's -t option, but it doesn't seem to do what I want. Basically, I'm thinking in terms of VNC-like operation, where the remote user and local user see the same thing, only instead of a GUI, they both see TTY1 (or 2, or etc). Is that doable, or no?

Ubuntu :: Lucid 10.04 - Bad Video Graphics Display

May 17, 2010

I just installed 10.04 Lucid Lynx and have a serious graphics problem. I've attached a picture to show the problem.
Some Background:
Pentium 4 3.06GHz
1.5GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9600

I installed via liveUSB but had to choose the "nomodeset" option by pressing F6. Otherwise after the Ubuntu boot screen the graphics went like that in the attached image. The installation went fine (took less than 15 minutes!) but after the reboot the graphics problem returned. I can't see anything and the system is useless this way. I can't post up any logs (I'm typing this from the liveUSB).

So I couldn't type my username, or password, and had to resort to a tty and links to get here and ask someone for help. I can't find anything on google that looks like people having the same issue and frankly I'm not even sure what is wrong.

Ubuntu Networking :: New Install Of Lucid Not Seeing Other Machine

Jan 5, 2011

Does anyone know of a decent Ubuntu networking tutorial I can work through? I'm struggling to get a new install of Lucid to see anything on my home network.

The current state of play is:
I can browse the internet and the router.
I have several laptops running Ubuntu and a NAS drive but the HP desktop PC with the new Lucid installation can't see them.
The NAS and the HP are wired to the router.
I installed Lucid because I never got Maverick to see the network either.
Lucid on my laptop can see the NAS drive over wireless.
I can see the NAS drive but not the other machines if I boot the HP into WinXP.

I'm not much good at XP networking either so perhaps that needs configuring too. A decent tutorial would be useful, especially one that doesn't assume I have Windows machines on the network as we rarely use Windows now.

Ubuntu Installation :: Remote X Applications Don't Work After Upgrade To Lucid

Oct 2, 2010

I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) system to 10.04 (Lucid) and my remote X applications no longer work. The problem seems to pertain to Xauthority. When the remote X client attempts to access the X server on Lucid it receives an error indicating that there is no matching MIT Magic Cookie (hereafter cookie) for the display. It turns out that this is true. I'm of the belief that the subject cookie should be generated for my display when the X session is started on Lucid.I thought this was being done by GDM when I logged on. However, $HOME/.Xauthority contains only 1 cookie which is for the display identified as "Pluto/Unix:0" (Pluto is the name of the host). I'm expecting a cookie for a display identified as "Pluto.my.test:0" where "my.test" is the domain name for my network.

Networking :: VSFTPD 2.2.2 On Ubuntu Lucid Denying Remote Access

Apr 28, 2011

My apologies if this is the wrong board for this thread, but seeing how the issue appears to be related to where I'm connecting from, I thought this would be the place to look.To start off, I've been running VSFTPD on the box for a good year or so now. Until recently, everything seemed to be working fine, but during the past few days I've run into issues with it and have been having trouble pin-pointing the problem. I've gone as far as reinstalling VSFTPD and rechecking every line in the conf file to no avail. The issue presents itself when I try to login to the FTP server remotely. The moment I put my user name in, I get disconnected without any error message, simply connection closed. That isn't the case when I'm connecting locally from the server. If I try to connect remotely using eth0 (internal network), it works fine again... but if I try eth1 (external network)... it fails. I'm thinking it might be related to PAM, but so far have been unable to figure out what I need to change in the configuration there. Additionally, the PAM log file doesn't show any activity if I'm connecting through eth1, but displays it if connecting through eth0.

Ubuntu Servers :: Cannot Shut Down Remote Machine / Server?

I am running a local webserver mainly for development. I have everything set up. The issue I currently have is that I cannot shut down the machine from the command line. I can issue the command but the machine remains on. I also cannot get to the desktop via VNC.The reason for this, is that there is no monitor attached so Ubuntu says that it is trying to run in Low Graphics Mode. I found this out as I plugged the monitor in to my server. So question is, how do I get around this? How can I set up Ubuntu to get past this, or do I need to install Ubuntu Server?

Ubuntu :: Setting Up Remote Administration On A Distant Machine?

Oct 30, 2010

I'm try to assess the viability of of setting up remote administration on a distant machine. Just for background, the computer I wish to administer is located on a boat in Southern Ireland while I'm in SE England. Sadly, the the boat operator is a far better fisherman than computer user and every now and then some rogue sensor numbers get captured by the boat's computer and these eventually need operator intervention. Anyone who has tried to talk a non PC literate user through correction routines over a dodgy mobile telephone while the said user is trying to operate mouse/keyboard in an Atlantic swell will appreciate the problem.

However, there is a fairly good mobile phone broadband signal available in the area so I was wondering if there was anyway I could set up a point to point connection with the boat over this medium. That would allow me to administer the machine remotely.

Ubuntu :: Gnome-RDP Does Display Group Names In Lucid

May 10, 2010

I recently updated to Ubuntu Lucid Lynx from Karmic (fresh install though). All of the packages I used in Karmic seem to work nicely in Lucid, with one exception gnome-rdp. I'm a sysadmin in several windows environments so as you can imagine I love the session storage and grouping features. Unfortunately gnome-rdp is not displaying the group names. it stores my session and creates the group structure just fine, it just doesn't show me the group names in the app or the right-click menu on the top panel icon. My gut says it has something to do with the new Lucid theme, but I like the new theme. Does anyone know of a config file I can edit, or something I can do to disable theme integration, just for gnome-rdp?

Ubuntu :: Lucid: Set Corner For Expo Display Of Workspaces

Jun 19, 2010

I have a lucid stock install of Ubuntu, and the visual effects are set to Normal.

The Windows-E shortcut brings up the 'expo' display of all four workspaces in a line.

Is there a way of making (say) the top right corner of the screen sensitive so that moving the mouse there triggers the display of all workspaces?

Can this be done with 'stock' installed software?

gconf-editor has a promising looking key called 'expo_edge' at

/apps/compiz/plugins/expo/allscreens/options/expo_edge

but that might do something different.
