It's a problem that the time display of fedora is too small for me.So that I'd like to try xclock. However,I don't know how to run this program automatically as soon as I log in to my system.I got stuckedI've tried to modify the .bashrc file in my home directory.
# .bashrc
# Source global definitions
if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then
. /etc/bashrc
[code]...
I'm having some trouble getting xclock installed on RH linux (RedHat 4.1.2):not sure how this could be I thought xclock was a very common package? Is there a way to update the repository locations to point to more recent/updated database?Quote:

I connected to host unix machine (oracle enterprise linux, shell is csh)by nomachine client(tried both the gnome setting and custom setting with konsole command). echo $SHELL /bin/cshAfter I run .sh file (bash command) , the xclock does not work any more.Anyway to make it work after running the .sh file?
I have created the following script which runs very well when it is executed alone. This script is to be run by a third party application (Oracle clusterware). The script (when is run by the application) doesn't successfully execute the xclock command. It even doesn't return the $USER variable.Following is what I got:
I'm having trouble displaying Xwindows programs on a remote machine. If I run "ssh -X newmachine" and I login and then run a program like xclock, I get the error message: Error: Can't open display: localhost:10.0
If I run the same command to an anothermachine which is running Ubuntu 8.04 it works fine and xclock displays on my localmachine. If I run the command "echo $DISPLAY" on newmachine, I see: localhost:10.0
Also, I have checked and xauth is installed on newmachine. What setting I have to change on Ubuntu 10.04 to allow remote display of Xwindows programs?
When I do xhost + also it hangs.Without the xclock I am not able to run oracle reports in production for bar code printing as I am not able to start a standalone reports server. Help needed to start xclock and where to look for any help
I recently dist-upgraded from Debian 5 to 6 (squeeze). Since then, the xclock I run from my window manager's start script isn't displaying correctly (it displays only a "0"). The thing is, if I run the same command in my start script in my terminal, it works just fine, as it has always done...
I use this rather "old" X applications because I like my programs simple/not buggy/fast, and it's resulting a rather annoying problem (being that apparently nobody else has it...). All other programs in my start script (gnome-terminal, emacs, xmodmap, etc) are working with no problems whatsoever.
My window manager: sawfish
Command to run xclock in my start script:
Code: xclock -digital -brief -geometry -0+0 Attached picture: Top: xclock initialized by start script Bottom: xclock initialized by terminal
I am having trouble getting grub to automatically boot into ubuntu server. When I turn on my server the grub menu shows up and shows me the choices. They all work fine except that grub wont automatically select one. This wouldn't be too much of a problem but this is a headless server and I can't boot into ubuntu without a keyboard. I tried looking through the grub 2 documentation but nothing seemed to work when I edited the conf file.
what to do for lock automatically slackware 13 if not used for n minutes ?What can i do to start automatically the ktorrent (a bittorrent program for linux) on system starts on slackware 13 ?
I'm making an effort to use Fedora as my primary desktop (previously Win Vista), but have a problem that I can't find an answer for. At seemingly random times, I will just be logged off and kicked out to the login screen for no reason. The computer's not shutting down or rebooting, but only logging out. It happens while I'm working, so it's very annoying. I have screensavers turned off, and have no actions set in power management (I am on a laptop). I have some experience with Linux systems, but not so much with using it as a desktop system. I'm running the following:
HP Pavilion dv3000 with Core 2 Duo P7350 @ 2GHz and 4GB RAM 64-bit Fedora 12, kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.3, Gnome 2.28.2 Nvidia driver with external monitor (TwinView) also using Compiz and Emerald theme manager
Does anyone have any clue as to what could be causing this, or even how to look for a cause?
I'm looking for a way to convert .wav/.cue file pairs to their respective tracks in flac format, with ID3 tags from the .cue file. Preferably I would like to be able to do this in such a way that the new tracks would be copied to the appropriate %Artist%/%Album%/%trackno% %title%.flac location. Back in the days when I would go out of the car and back in when it didn't work, I would mount the .cue/wav file pair with Alcohol52, and use Windows Media Player to do the rest of the ripping for me. I'd like to be able to do something similar in Fedora.
I've looked around, but most threads talk about cuebreakpoints and shnsplit. Surely, I could do the job with those, but then I'd need to rename the files manually, copy them to the correct location manually, and input the ID3 data manually. This is very time consuming, and I'm trying at all costs to avoid this. I've already called Google several times, but his phone is turned off. How could I do the conversion in an automated way, preferably without going to Mr. terminal's office?
I am going nuts because this should a simple thing and for some reason it's not. 1. I'm just trying to use NTP to set the time automatically. I've done numerous installs and had it work fine. However for my Fedora 11 box and this Fedora 13 box, it's not working. I'm getting a vague error "unable to connect to server." Which could mean anything. As near as I can tell, it should be simple:
a. Select to use NTP. b. Adjust the local firewall to allow connections at 123 (ntp) c. If necessary, adjust the router settings for port 123.
I have tried sending port 123 traffic directly to my Fedora 13 machine, but same error. I've tried using other choices of ntp server (like the North America pool). No dice. I've had two separate routers, first a Dlink and now a Cisco. Same problem. I've checked the SELinux logs for errors but didn't notice anything obvious (that doesn't mean much -- I'm not much of an SELinux guru). I've set up Fedora 14 at work and it connected just fine. Didn't have to open anything other than the local port on the Fedora firewall. No network/router adjustments needed.
It's not a giant thing but it's driving me nuts. Anyone out there have any suggestions? Particularly big obvious things that maybe I've overlooked? Does some other setting override this NTP time? Does using this require use of GMT? Something like that?
how do I uninstall Java? Tried with Synaptic and apt-get remove, but uninstalling sun-java6 automatically adds default-jre (openjdk) and uninstalling openJdk automatically installs sun-java ... but I don't want ANY Java on my machine - am I missing something? Already thought I maybe have a package that requires SOME kind of Java, but how do I find out?
I'm running off the most current kernel for Fedora 11 x64 and all packages are upgraded. I didn't hit the suspend button at any time but it went down to disk (black screen, soft yellow power light) and the lid had to be opened again for things to work properly.
I have an up-to-date x86-64 F11 installation. Twice every day once precisely at 10:40am, and once sometime roughly around 1:26pm -- the laptop suspends. Even if I'm in the middle of typing something. I've checked the BIOS and nothing there would indicate a timer for an automatic suspend message being sent to the OS. This is a 2.5 year old machine, and it's only run Fedoras (7,8,9,10, and now 11). This problem has only cropped up on Fedora 11.Any idea where to start debugging it? I looked at /var/log/pm-suspend.log, but it just seems to indicate that it properly went to suspend and had no problems waking up 8 seconds later.
I have a number of applications that I like to have start when I log in. Is there a way to have them automatically open in a specified workspace? For example, I normally keep my e-mail in workspace 2 ('E-mail').
I'm sure there is a thread on this somewhere, but after looking though the first 100+ search results, I can't seem to find it.
After a kernel update today, I noticed that new kernels are not being added to my grub menu.lst (so consequently, I was running an older kernel).
Any obvious reason why this would happen (kernels being installed normally, with yum update)? I thought the whole process was supposed to be automagic.
Would it have anything to do with the fact that I just kept my F11 menu.lst, and added a F12 kernel to it when I installed F12 (to a separate partition), then eventually (today, finally) removed the f11 kernels from it?
is there a way to make the cpu fan turn faster at certain speed when the cpu temp. reaches lets say 65 or 70c automatically thru a script or config file ?
i would like to know how can load my windows partition in the moment that i logon in Fedora ? (Fedora 12 in my case, beatiful OS). This partition only have my data, nothing from Windows.
Using Ubuntu Linux for some years now I love CUPS functionality to switch on the printer (at least my USB connected HP Deskjet) automatically when a new print job has been submitted to CUPS. This does not work in Fedora 15? Does anyone know how to enable this or has the new CUPS or any other component lost this functionality?
I have fc9 installed on my system and I am facing a weird problem When I login to my machine (both as ROOT and USER) I do not get connected to the Internet automatically. I have to right click on the n/w Icon on the task bar, disable it and enable it gain then I get connected.
