Ubuntu :: GParted Not Working Right / Whats Going On Here?
Aug 3, 2011
For about a month GParted has been not running right for me. When I try to formate ext2/3 FS to a disk, it never completes, or hangs or then wont quit all the way when I shut it down. Then I have to use sudo pkill gparted to kill it right. Any one else having this trouble? Whats going on here? Is this some sort of kernel regression?

I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.
The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.
When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.
When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.
When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:
Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda5
Disk /dev/sda5: 28.5 GB, 28566397440 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 3473 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -u /dev/sda5
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 3473.There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Plus the Windows partition seems to go over its limits.
Since all of my OS installations are still working, I don't know how critical this is. From reading another post, I understand this might be able to be fixed by making some changes in fstab.

Is a firewall necessary on ubuntu? I've never thought about it until now. Do I need one? If so whats a good firewall to install? As you can tell im not too knowledgeable on this subject. I know (i think) linux has a built in firewall called iptables but ive never used it or looked into it.

I installed a new instance of Ubuntu server (10.04) and set the hostname equal to "ubuntu-10.04-server-i386". However when I type the command hostname I get that the hostname is equal to "ubuntu-10". I then realised that the command hostname --long gives me the full name (as defined when doing the linux installation) while hostname --short gives me the name as displayed in terminal. My question is; what is the difference between these two? Are both valid?

I've got a solid PC w/Xeon dual core, 4gb RAM, and (2) 1Tb Sata HDs - looking to replace a WinXP pc that currently is running PlayOn (for media to the BD player on the TVs) and sharing folders/drives to all the PCs (WinXP, Win7, OSX, and Ubuntu.
I have tried a few distros to get media shared to the BD players, and even a Win7 - but the BD players can't seem to play any of the video files on the newer 'servers' - and only the Win7 even appears to the Sony TV in the living room (even though it can only browse the folders with video files). Another problem with the Win7 being tested for acting as a server - is the Macs cant seem to access the shares (get Access Denied errors).
Wondering if there is any good distro that is mainly setup for sharing files and storage space to all my devices. Thinking of trying FreeNAS, and seeing if I could add the UPnP/DNLA server packages to it?

I just installed a dual boot of ubuntu with XP on my laptop. I'm planning on deleting XP altogether and keeping ubuntu. Now, as I understand the best way to do this is to go to GParted, delete the ntfs partition, and format it to ext3. Does this sound right? Now the problem is I can't seem to get GParted installed. I go to the terminal window and type sudo apt-get install gparted but it doesn't work. I get the following messege.
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information.. Done
E: Couldn't find package gparte

I have a Ubuntu system where the internet has been whitelisted so that I can't use Synaptic. I was wondering if there was a way to install GParted without Synaptic? Do something with the ISO file perhaps? Or would this turn out to be quite complicated?

I have what is a weird problem, at least I think it is. I deleted some files and now my partitions do not show up in Gparted. Instead, the entire disk shows up as unallocated space. I am still able to run every partition, one of which is ubuntu and another which is Windows without any other apparent problems. here is my fdisk -l:
Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders

I have a messed up system, or so I think. I have all sorts of partition issues that I just don't understand. I may have installed Ubuntu multipe times (GRUB show 5+ copys) along side my copy of W7. GParted show two Unused partition spaces, one massive on that it cant read completely (ntfs), a LinuxSwap, something called (ext4) and something called (extended).
What is going on? I recently deleted a virtual machine, but it looked like this even before this. How can I allocate all of my space only to W7 and one Ubuntu OS? Pic of GParted is attached.
