General :: Pingable - Cannot Get Connection To Internet?
Jan 12, 2010
I have a Fedora core 3 box that I am trying to use to replace my current document server. This box was part of a domain at a different location previously. At this location we use a "work group" network. I have set the IP, Gateway, Subnet, and DNS servers. I can see the machine from my XP machine, but cannot get a connection to the internet?
I would like to have all traffic from the ethernet connection out through the wireless (basically using the box as a router) however I am having some trouble doing this.
I have done this before on Windows however I am having some trouble doing this on linux, I have tried using Squid Proxy however I am having some trouble using configuring/using it.
I am using Yellow Dog Linux however I am willing to change to any other distro as long as it is compatable with PS3 (as this is what im using linux on)
I am running Ubuntu 10.10, and I would like to use my computer to share the internet connection from an ethernet port. For example, I would like to set up my computer as a wireless access point so I can create a network that other computers can connect to for internet.

I have been using the 3 OS regularly with no problems. But today suddenly, I had no internet connection with the 2 linux partitions which are complete independent, but no problems with windows. i can keep using the internet under windows with no problems.
I haven't touched any conf files.

I just noticed a change in my dmesg file when i start any of my 2 linux partitions.
I'm having a problem connecting to the Internet on my gNewSense installation. My Internet works fine through Ubuntu and Windows, but not through gNewSense, is there anyway of fixing this? Also, while searching around I found that somebody said I ought to type "dmesg" and copy the results.

I just downloaded openSUSE 11 but I don't have an internet connection. I thought that it will find my cable connection automatically like Ubuntu does, but it didn't. It doesn't have a normal network configuration set-up, there is nowhere that it even gives me a choice to select local internet connection or a cable connection. What do I have to do to set it up.

I am new to Linux. Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 few days back. The problem I am having is not able to connect to internet. Mine is direct cable connection using CAT5 cable terminted to my ethernet card. and I connect to the net using a dial-up connection. I think other end of the cable is terminated to a common switch.I have tried searching it over net. The only thing I could figure out is that I have to do some configuration on pppoe (am i right?)Are there any commands I have to enter or anything like we used to do in windows?
I have just installed Linux Mint 8 Helena & it appears to be working well alongside my xp system. The problem I do have is setting up the much needed broadband connection. I have an adsl speedtouch330 usb modem, with tesco.net as my server, which works just fine on xp hence this mail. Am I missing something obvious, or have I got myself into depths much deeper & complex than I thought.

I have been having difficulty with my BT Broadband over the last few weeks, it has now been resolved, but I can no longer connect to either my home network or the internet from my laptop though when I re-installed windows 7 the connection was automatic. I can see the link but can't connect.I also dual boot Vista with Mint 8 Helena on my desktop box and cannot connect Helena to either the network or the internet. My router is a BTHomeHub2 and it was recently suggested that it could be being blocked by BT!
I just installed Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.x on my laptop from an iso file. But I cannot browse internet from firefox (tried to connect internet from a wire connection), and cannot ping a website.
I am totally new to Linux. I was not able to connect to internet using the default network manager in Ubuntu, so I set up the internet connection using "sudo pppoeconf" and it works great. I want to share this internet connection with another PC which runs Windows XP. Please, can anybody give me step by step instructions about how to do that? (instructions for configuring both Ubuntu and windows machine, A GUI will be very helpful) Both my Ubuntu machine and windows PC have static IP. And I dont want anyone to use this internet connection except the windows PC.
Using acer aspire one (ZG5) and have lost connection to Firefox browser after changing setting to make google my home default web page. I have no experience with linux so any help would be appreciated. There's no problem with my internet connection it shows connected.
I'm trying to find a good host for my site, and I've been trying to get one with a fast, reliable connection - I frequently use it as a proxy server for various areas, and since my connection is frequently a 50 Mb or 100 Mb line, I need a fast network connection so it doesn't slow down too much when I switch to the proxy server.
At the moment, I've narrowed it down to a couple of providers that are all within a few hops and <6ms away from my main location; it pretty much comes down to connection speed. One in particular that I'm trialing offers an metered 100100 connection at a good price, so I'm hoping to go with them, but I want to make sure the connection is solid and doesn't drop to a much lower speed during the day if they are sharing it among many users.
I have a pretty simple speed test procedure - I use wget on a 1GB file hosted on a backbone with a 1GB connection, and see how fast it downloads. For now, it's sticking at a steady 11.2 MBs or 90 Mbs, which is fast enough for me, but I need to make sure it can maintain that speed even in times of heavy usage.

Basically, I need a script that runs wget every half hour and logs the output and time in a reasonably readable format. It's probably something simple enough to do, but I'm just learning my way around the linux command shell, so some simple instructions on how to create and run such a script would be great [CentOS 5]. I have full root access to the server and I'm the only user on it if it matters.
I am trying to complete a update from Etch to Lenny but I am currently unable to access the internet via my debian server. I have determined I need to point to a contractor proxy for security reasons, however I do not know where to add the contractor proxy IP address.
When I boot up my machine (running CentOS 5.5), I have no internet connection. ifconig doesn't show that eth0 is present. Going into my Network Gui from the administration tools, it says that eth0 is not active. I can't activate it from the GUI.But...If I sudo dhclient -d eth0, the process runs for a little bit, and all of the sudden my internet connection is there.
There must be some sort setting that I need to change to avoid doing this everytime I start the machine. Its odd, because I have an identical machine right next to it that doesn't have this problem.
