General :: Not Able To Configure Internet Connection

I am new to Linux. Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 few days back. The problem I am having is not able to connect to internet. Mine is direct cable connection using CAT5 cable terminted to my ethernet card. and I connect to the net using a dial-up connection. I think other end of the cable is terminated to a common switch.I have tried searching it over net. The only thing I could figure out is that I have to do some configuration on pppoe (am i right?)Are there any commands I have to enter or anything like we used to do in windows?
I want to configure Internet connection in my linux os but don't know how to do it. In Windows XP the method is quite simple but in linux I know know what to do about, It has been very challenging for me to do it but don't knw how ot do it.This file I have to type at run "RASPPPOE.inf" to get list of available Internet providers.
In windows I do it in this way- 1.First go to My network places ->View network connection->Local area network->Properties->Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)->Install->protocol->Microsoft TCP/IP version 6(select)->Have disk->(then browse to get RASPPPOE.inf file from PPPOE folder)->click OK->select PPP over Ethernet protocol->Click OK->>continue anyway(two times if asked)-> Apply->OK.
2.Then got to run ->Type raspppoe (Enter)->one window will open->select the LAN card (where internet cable is connected)->Click on Query available services->Select Internet provider name and->Click on Create dial up connection.-> Then dial up will be created on Desktop where I enter my username and password to start internet.
In Damn Small Linux? I have a dinosaur computer I need to use for something, and there's no ethernet port. But there is USB. On the internet box my ISP provided there's a port for a usb cable. But I plug it in and there's no connection. Tried Vector too. Is there a terminal command to make it work?
I have just installed Debian Squeeze on my spare computer (dual booted with Ubuntu 11.04) and I cannot connect to the internet using Squeeze. Due to my ISP, I have to manually connect this computer and on Ubuntu copying and pasting a text file such as this into the terminal works with no problems.What do I need to do to manually configure my Squeeze internet connection?
My father recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my new AMD dualcore, but we have not been able to access the net.we tried resetting the modem/router. Windows XP had no problem getting us online - why is it such an issue with Ubuntu?
i am having problem with setting up an internet connection on ubuntu plateform , presently i am running internet on xp plateform and want to switch to ubuntu plateform . i am connected to the internet through broadband connection by using modem. it's a dsl connection so plz tell me how to configure internet connection
I would like to have all traffic from the ethernet connection out through the wireless (basically using the box as a router) however I am having some trouble doing this.
I have done this before on Windows however I am having some trouble doing this on linux, I have tried using Squid Proxy however I am having some trouble using configuring/using it.

I have one server at home, connected through a router that gives me a static IP:192.168.1.2 - My PC192.168.1.3 - CentOS serverI enabled the port 80 into router forwarding system and I can connect properly to CentOS server, using the IP my internet provider gives me. My router automatically forwards a changed IP to my dyndns.com account so I can also access the server through a domain name (I pay to have it linked to one of my domains).My next step is to configure the mail server (dovecot) , so I can send emails from my local server(192.168.1.3).I was wondering if anyone has any tutorial links or tips to have the mail server configured through a home internet provider + home router.
i am newbie in linux , i am an xp user and now want to switch to linux plateform and having an internet connection through bsnl broedband and using seperate modem whose interfece is sometjing like 192.168.something.

Its very easy to make DSL connection in the windows operating system.But I do not know how to configure my system to make connection on Linux.Anyone can suggest me what type of modem and router i should have to use to make a connection on the linux.If there any commands to make connection then mention it.
I have a dell wireless wlan 1397 mini card with an ethernet 802.3. Now I am trying to connect by a wired connection. Supposedly a have a bcm5784m nic. I have tried to configue the bcm5784m which was shown it to be regonized through fedora 11, i could activate it, and connection still failed. In my driver list on my dell inspiron and studio 1737 the bcm5784m was not checked as a download i needed. What in the hell am I doing wrong. I have searched exhaustively and have found nothing concerning the wire ethernet card or bcm. Supposidly ubuntu does support the dell studio 1737 laptopForgive my spelling. Oh and by the way I am using kubuntu 9.04 jaunty.
I am facing a problem to configure pine. My machine has no global IP, but it is in a LAN. The LAN is connecetd in Internet. The global IP, through which the Internet traffic of the LAN is passed, is known. How can I configure pine to send/receive mail?
I have a problem sending emails in the command line. I have introduced this command:
sendEmail -f my.account@gmail.com -t myself@domain.tld -u this is the test tile -m "this is a test message" -s smtp.gmail.com -o tls=yes -xu usernameonly -xp mypasswd
But then I received this message: sendEmail[13230]: ERROR => Connection attempt to smtp.gmail.com:25 failed: IO::Socket::INET: connect: Connection timed out
I only have very basic understanding on how it works.This question may have been asked so many times, and honestly I've tried so many tutorials and have read a lot of articles but it all didn't worked. I may be too stupid to have this done, or it is just the lack of knowledge.
Here it goes,I have a VPS with a host which runs OpenVZ in LA. I want to create a VPN tunnel to the VPS and tunnel all my internet traffic to the VPS. Can somebody please help me out on the step-by-step?
I was once able to configure the VPS to run OpenVPN and my client pc was able to connect to it, but the internet connection is still thru with my local connection. Did it with a tutorial too. I would also like to ask, The VPS has 512mb of RAM, I was wondering how many clients can it handle at the same time.
I am using both suse linux and scientific linux 4.6. my ether net card is RTL8111/8168B PCI Gigait.In suse i can configure internet and its working fine.
1. How to configure network in scientific linux 4.6 ? which driver should i install ? i don't find any driver corresponding to to this Ethernet card.
2.how to configure epiphany web browser in suse 11.0 ? it is not working.
