View 9 RepliesI'm running Ubuntu 10.04 inside VMware Player running under Windows Vista and I can't connect to the internet or the host computer from the Ubuntu.
I have set all the VMware services to manual (like VMware DHCP Service), but starting them manually doesn't help.
In VMware, the network seems to work (there is a green dot beside the network icon) and I have tried both Bridged and NAT settings.
ifconfig doesn't show the eth1 interface, unless I give it as a parameter (or use -a). I think this means that Ubuntu thinks that the network isn't connected at all.
I've been allowed to work on the server of a forum. I was given the username and password, and with them logged in successfully on the server using PuTTY, but now I'm not sure what command I use to do anything to the users on the forum For example how would I change someone's username or password, etc.

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

Normally one can connect to the machine by using putty with the machine's name or IP-Address. But to this machine one can't connect it with it's name. Something should wrong.

I'm attempting to use Putty to log in SSH, but I'm getting an error.
Saying the sever unexpectedly close network connection.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it. This is a new computer, that hasn't logged in using putty before. Also I'm on a home wireless network. It dosen't seem to be a firewall issue, the error message pops up, when the firewall is disabled.
And I just had Go Daddy do a reboot. Oh, and I think I might have entered my password incorrectly a few times, last night.
I remember the Go Daddy rep, saying that my IP address may be flagged, but that it would unfilter and unlock it self within an hour or so. It's been over 24 hrs.
Before the password issue, i was able to log in.. But i can't now.
Others can log in. So there unable to duplicate the problem.

I am not able to connect to server through putty, my collegue is able to connect to same server from his desktop through putty.
I am getting ssh session and after providing user id an password its stays still and no error message. firewall and se linux is disabled and also i checked tcpwrappers there is not restriction given.
when I try to connect via PuTTY from a windows machine I get " PuTTY Fatal error connection timed out. I try to do so via a router redirecting IPadr:86 to local adr:22 on the Linux machine.
I seems not to be a routing issue since the router is setup to redirect apparently correctly.
Well I have stopped iptables and selinux is disabled. The sshd deamon is running. I can logon with ssh locally "ssh webcamATlocal adr".

View 8 Replies View RelatedI can log in when using the keyboard from the server no problems but when I try and log on from my laptop this morning using putty I can connect type in my user name but when I put in my password it says access denied now I also can not FTP and webmin does not connect to the server but I can get to the web pages no problem with a browser so can this be fixed or do I have to start from scratch again to get me logged in with putty and webmin somehow the password is not working in ssh.

I have samba running and share files with my windows 7 machine, so they do connect.
When i try to use putty it always refuses the connection.SQLyog tells me off too, but it only cays it cannot connect.
I was checking into SSH, since that is how they are both trying to connect, but I can not find adequate info online for my problem.
I have debian lenny running, I was pretty sure it has ssh running, but i couldnt locate 'sshd'
Is SSH on there by a different name or do I need to install the service.
(ps - getting samba running was a nightmare, but i think it was windoze fault, i tried setting up the debian machine exactly how the guides said to do, but it never could connect and denied passwords constantly, then the next day after a few windows reboots had happened, all of the sudden it worked. I am trying to get two way serial communications going between a Windows XP system and a Linux system (RHEL 5).I have /sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS0
in /etc/inittab. I am using a generic USB to serial adaptor on Windows (Unitek) and a null modem cable. I have putty configured for 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, one stop bit, no flow control.I get the login prompt from agetty in the putty window but input does not work; I see weird characters in the putty screen. I can echo output into the device from windows and see it, but
cat < /dev/ttyS0. just prints out weird characters from what I type.

I downloaded Slackware64-current to give it a try on my laptop and all went well as usual. However when trying to connect to another computer from Dolphin via sftp I was informed that sftp is an 'invalid protocol'. I can use ftp, though. Same thing happens with Konqueror. Using Konsole I can successfully start sftp, although that is not exactly what I want or need. For me, this is really a major problem as my office computer can only be accessed at home via secure shell. I need to be able to upload/download files and folders from there and from other machines. I wasn't really aware of how heavily I depend on this until now. Has anyone else run into this problem? If so, is there a fix or a workaround?

I chose the option to install fedora on any free space, so it should have installed on the empty partition. When I boot up, there are two boot options. Fedora and Other. When I select other, it gives an error:BOOTMGR not found.Is there a way to add Windows Vista to the Grub Bootloader by editing the grub menu. I don't know if it will help, but here is what I get when I run fdisk in the terminal:

Linux with Firefox In order to connect to a network share directly from you browser under Linux, you must configure Firefox to handle URL's starting with "smb://". When I go out of town I normally take my Acer Netbook to travel light. I ran into a problem over the weekend which I have seen before and couldn't find the cause. I used the wifi at the house I was staying at and could connect to the router via Wicd and ping outside IP addresses, however, I could not connect to any websites with Iceweasel or Midori. I receive the generic error that the browser is unable to connect. Now that I am back at my house I cannot repeat the problem, but have found a couple threads about disabling ipv6 protocol. The symptoms sound like a browser setting, but I couldn't find any settings that looked unusual.
