I want to sync files from my home directory on my linux server to my local computer. I noticed the instructions for [URL] only has instructions for linux with gnome/kde. can i use dropbox without a gui?

View 14 Replies View RelatedThe searchfunction in Gnome 3 does not find the files in my DropBox. When searching it does find the DropBox folder, but not the files contained in them.
Dropbox folder is placed in /home/myusr/
All other subcontent folders in the home directory does show up in gnome search,
Went through Google and DuckDuckGo but was unble to find out how to manually change the places that the searchfunction indexes.
Wondering if most people have GNOME or KDE installed on their server, and how much memory do these guys consumed.
I have been running a VPS website with only 256MB of RAM fine, though memory does appear to be a bottleneck at times. So got a new server with 1GB RAM but I'm surprised to see after installing CentOS 64-bit with GNOME the memory consumption varies between 600MB-1GB.
The only difference is I've never had used any GUI desktop on the VPS (don't think the hosting company offers one). Wondering if the memory consumption came entirely from the GNOME desktop I installed.
Would most people install with GNOME, configure all the stuff required, and then remove it?

I have been using dropbox to sync across three ubuntu machines (two with 9.04, one with 10.04) and a windows vista machine, for about six months. I've seen a couple of oddities but am basically very happy with it. I pay for their 50GB store.
For email I use mutt and download (fetchmail) separately onto two of the ubuntu machines, outside the dropbox folders. It's a bit irritating maintaining two different mail dirs, but it does make for more security. I'm now thinking about putting the mail dirs into the dropbox folder. But if something then goes wrong with the syncing, it will be serious.
I'm using a Linux machine at work, and started using at home in a VM for some home development. I have a vimrc and a bashrc with some configuration, that are useful for both machines. What is the best way to sync them? Create a symlink for each file in my home folder pointing out to a the respectives files in my Dropbox sync folder? Is this possible (delete .bashrc and create a symlink instead)?

Recently I installed Dropbox on a server to do file synchronization and it added " (Case Conflict 1)" to a whole bunch of my files! I realize now that it was caused by case insensitivity but I'm still left with hundreds of files that are in this renamed state. Is there a script in Linux that would allow me to recursively go through the directories and strip out this string?
i.e.
a (Case Conflict 1).jpg --> a.jpg
/myfolder/abc (Case Conflict 1).doc --> /myfolder/abc.doc
/myfolder/subfolder/mydoc (Case Conflict 1).pdf --> /myfolder/subfolder/mydoc.pdf

By that, I mean: automatically backup local files to a server in the background and handle versioning on the server side? I know I could theoretically patch today something with cron jobs and rsync and all that jazz but was looking for a canned solution. After configuring and reconfiguring and reinstallation, I finally got it installed the way I wanted, so I thought! Today, I decided to give Debian a try. Read many posts concerning its stability, etc. D/L and installed. No problem, First I was met with permission denied error when trying to perform a simple 'cp' command. Jumped back to the forum and searched found a solution type 'su and enter password that worked perfectly I type some things in the smb.conf file (according to other instructions) then return to my XP machine to try connecting again. I know this isn't exactly 'rocket scientist' stuff, but WTH is going on? When the login screen appears in XP, I provide the proper credentials and still can't connect!! Also, how can I grant myself permissions other than using 'su -'?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed joomla and proceeded to do the web install. Got the interface up and running and its now complaining it does not see the mysql server running. I do in fact have it running. Veryfied it with mysql command on command line and it complained with missing attributes.
I read a thread that it needs php-mysql installed. So went to proceed to install it. Well, I did not have that and went to install it. Verified it. Package mysql-server-5.0.77-3.el5.i386 already installed and latest version
I then did a service mysql reset.
Checked back at the joomla web install interface and still, it says there is no mysql support! What is next? Im running centos OS. Also, I am running LAMP

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am very new to Linux and trying to setup a Ubuntu server in my Windows 7 PC. that means, I am trying to have a dual boot system. While starting, my PC had 500GB and only one drive C. 18GB of it is used and rest was free.
I have gone thru the following step.
1. Downloaded Ubuntu server on a USB using "Universal USb installer"
2. Booted the PC from the USB and started the Install Ubuntu Server
3. After a few steps the install showed 4 partition options.
I specified the guided partitioning options using free space. (The other options where : Using entire disk, using entire disk with LVM, Manual) Next step it asked me to enter the disk space- it told me it will take at-least 19 GB and maximum available is approx 450GB. My intention was to use the full free space as much as possible. So I specified "max". It told me that it is going to overwrite and create the new partition. Then it progressed fine.
4. I also chosen to install the LAMP stack /Postgress etc.
The installation completed fine When rebooted I logged back in in windows 7. When I opened explorer, I still see that the C drive has around 18GB and 396 GB free space. t seems some of the space has been used by the linux server install. I again started my PC and now I logged in to Ubuntu. I tried command $ df -h . But it is showing the following:

I just installed Red Hat Linux Professional 8.0 in my VMWare, but I do not know how to start X Windows. I have tried to type "startx" on "RUN", but I get error message: Fatal Server error Server already active for display 0. If this server is no longer running, remove tmp/.X0-lock and start again.
