Fedora Installation :: PAE Kernel Installed By Default Now?

Jun 10, 2009

I've just downloaded F11 i386 installation DVD. I installed it on my laptop and just now noticed that PAE kernel got installed. Isn't PAE for systems with RAM >3.2 GB? It's a pretty old laptop (P3, 256MB ram). So, is PAE kernel ok for me or should I reinstall from scratch and use some specific switches in the installer to get non-PAE kernel? I've also read that Yum doesn't recognize PAE packages dependencies and will install non-PAE kernel modules if I try to install let's say Nvidia driver or so.

Fedora :: Default Gnome Panels

Jan 13, 2010

I just finally updated from Fedora 10 to Fedora 12. Everything is fine. Except.in my stupidity I decided to mess arount with the default Gnome desktop settings. Now I've done this before but I still can't remember exactly the moves I made. But somehow on the default Gnome desktop setup. I clicked on the "delete this panel button" from the top default panel. Well, of course things got wierd. First of all there is no default volulme control button anymore. I could go on and on. But, the buttom line is I just want to get my Gnome Desktop back to it's default settings. Without going too crazy.

Fedora :: Changing Default File Associations In Gnome 3?

May 25, 2011

How do I change the default file associations in F15/gnome 3? My system is currently set to open .tex files with emacs. But I prefer TeXworks, and while TeXworks shows up in the "Open With" menu, it would be convenient if double-clicking on a tex file opened it in TeXworks. In gnome2, the "Open with-->Other application" option let me select the default program associated with a particular type of file, but this functionality seems to be gone in Gnome 3. Do I have to edit some config file?

Fedora :: Default File Manager In Gnome 3 After Installing XFCE?

Jul 22, 2011

I recently decided to install xfce-desktop as a fallback alternative whenever Gnome 3 has problems. Now I have the Thunar file manager opening up by default even when logged into Gnome (for example when using Alt-F2 and typing in a folder name, or when plugging in an iPod.) I've searched around for days but can't find any place to set a default file manager. The Default Applications dialogue doesn't include file manager, only web browser, video etc.)

Fedora :: Gnome Power Manager Not Installed Correctly / Sort It?

Nov 11, 2009

I'm running 10/11 on a toshiba satellite. i kinda got tired of loosing stuff because i mis-timed the battery discharge, so some months ago i pulled the battery and just ran on the adapter (back ground, i don't know if it's nothing, related to, or caused the problem).

monday morning fired her up - boom got the power "gnome manager not installed correctly"message. tuesday, googled gnome then power then... you get the route, and found Fedoraforum.org, read the stuff, did the yum remove...., did the yum install.... everthing seemed cool. 2nd reboot she stopped at the "f/infinity/balloon" kinda logo.

i went to verbose startup and - all sorts of services were failing; the word deprecate(d, ing, tion) came up a lot "device full..." came up a fair bit as well. when i tried the "yum remove" approach again i got [rpmdb: write: 0x1fd48b0, 8192: No space left on device]. similarily on "yum install" same kinda stuff - deprecation, BaseExpection, deprecated..... kinda long winded. up till now (13 years)

Fedora :: Gnome-power-manager Configuration Defaults Not Installed Properly?

Nov 19, 2009

My monitor kept powering down after 20 minutes so I installed Gnome-power-manager by yum so that I could change the settings. After the installation and every time I try to use it I get a message saying:

Quote:

Install problem!

The configuration defaults for Gnome Power Manager have not installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator

I'm now unable to effect a change in the power settings and the display keeps turning off.

1) Is someone able to post their config file from a working F12 install? I believe it's /etc/dbus-1/system.d/gnome-power-manager.conf but not certain as I don't have one ;-)

2) ~/.gconf/apps/gnome-power-manager/%gconf.xml is empty - is it empty for someone with a working install?

3) how I can change the power settings without the gui - I'm googling on this point and will post the answer as and when I find it.

Code:
[ecvej@desktop ~]$ uname -r
2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64
Edit: In case it is relevant, this is the contents of my /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.system/%gconf-tree.xml

how to enable the Gnome Shell with an AMD 6950 graphics card and the default Fedora 15 drivers? I may try the AMD Catalyst proprietary drivers but from history those usually lag behind the Fedora versions. I also read some people had issues with the current AMD Catalyst drivers in the Catalyst guide thread.

Also, the AMD 6950 graphics card fan is at full speed all the time in Fedora 15. I do believe you can with the Catalyst drivers using aticonfig but was wondering about the default Fedora 15 drivers?

OpenSUSE Install :: Install Error - Config Defaults For GNOME For GNOME Power Manager Have Not Been Installed Correctly

Mar 4, 2010

Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;

GNOME failed to load telling me:

Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.

So I

Code:

To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:

Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.

So I try

Code:

To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error

Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.

So I

Code:

And get the following

I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run

Code:

On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run

Code:

To mount the device.

I end up with:

Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)

So, I

Code:

And see 9 partitionitions

Code:

Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get

plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.

I try

Code:

On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try

Code:

And run into the error:

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)

Good thing is there is a

Code:

Since space is a problem, I

Code:

On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to

Code:

I still get the error

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override

Code:

For package update tells me

cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w

Code:

For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.

Fedora :: Installed Gnome-power-manager, And After Config It For "never Suspend"

Aug 28, 2010

I have a FC11 over AMD Sempron 2400+ 512Mb RAM and Im using it as 24 hours server, but after a few hours of work it makes something like suspend (don't response to network, clock freeze, etc. but screen works) till I touch mouse or keyboard.

I think this is a configuration item, but I'd searching about pm-utils and I found how config suspend and hibernate states, but nothing about what thing order a suspend every few hours.

I'd installed gnome-power-manager, and after config it for "never suspend", only change is, maybe, a bit more time before automatic suspend.

Fedora :: Get The Message " Gnome 3 Could Not Load " And Installed All The Packages Needed To Install Guest Additions?

Jul 14, 2011

Whenever I boot up Fedora 15 on Virtual Box, I get the message " gnome 3 could not load " and I installed all the packages needed to install Guest Additions, but even when I mounted the file, the ONLY file I could find online that was VMBoxGuestAdditions.iso or something like that, I mounted it, I tried installing, but nope, it gives me an error message that it can't. I have the latest version of VirtualBox and I've been on several forums and looked at many places but I can't fix it. I also have a problem where when I boot it up it says " the system is optimized to support 32 bit but it is currently 64 bit go here and click this to fix it " or something like that. and I can't figure out how to fix it in Virtual Box.
