Server :: Can't Run Script After Hard Disk Was Filled
Dec 13, 2010I have a MythTV backend setup with videos also transcoded to a directory for streaming to my Roku frontend. A week ago, the backend had an issue that caused the hard disk to fill up, which borked a bunch of things up. I've since repaired the damage (and learned a lot about log size settings for logrotate.d). Anyway, my last problem is that a script I wrote to compare the files in the transcoded directory to the MythTV base directory and delete files no longer relevent doesn't work anymore. I get the following error when run by any user, including root:

The script worked fine before the hard disk fill, but now I can't seem to get it to work. Both the original MythTV partition and the streaming partition are XFS. Here's the pertinent lines from fstab:

Permissions for the directories are the following:

I tried fiddling with the mount options for the partition, but that didn't seem to solve the problem.

RAM: 192 mo .
HDD: 120 GB (no probelem here).
CPU: 600 mhz.
Card graphic: 8 mo.
The problem that I need a dstro can run using these requirement but distro must be provided by the (wubi).

Jun 21, 2010I installed wubi with the lowest amount of virtual disk not realising what it referred to. i have looked at the help files for increasing the virtual disk - lvpm is not compatible with the latest wubi. I have downloaded wubi-add-virtual disk but when i paste the command into terminal it says that cannot open it.

What exactly is meant my this? Does this mean it is an easier way to install the dual boot with Windows? (I am using Windows-7 on a new PC.) Or does it mean it will install Ubuntu under Windows? I assumed it meant the latter.
In any case, I downloaded it - a mere 1024K, scanned it and ran it. I get a stubborn error box with the message:

And that box will not go away - no matter what I press, including the [X] button in the upper corner, the box reappears. I had to go into Process Explorer to kill pyrun.exe and its parent, pyl5E39.tmp.exe before the [Cancel] button would close it for good.
I could not find doc on this so I don't know what it really wants as a prerequisite to running wubi.

Aug 30, 2010I had an installation of Ubuntu under windows via wubi, after an update last week it wouldn't boot up at all, I tried everything I could find about how to fix grub, none of which worked, after looking at a working installation of Ubuntu with wubi I realised that my root.disk file had dissapeared.
I gave up and decided to get rid of windows all together, and now have a fresh 'proper' install of Ubuntu, but that root.disk file has turned up in a file called 'found'.
Is there any way I can mount that file in ubuntu to retrive the documents etc that I thought I had lost?

Sep 5, 2010Since the partition of windows7 (C: ) where wubi was installed was too small, I decided to reinstall wubi into another larger partition (E: ), keeping the old root.disk. Sadly when I replaced the root.disk ubuntu cannot boot, the loader says that there is no root.disk file, although it's there... I guess there is some kind of checksum about the virtual disk toward the loader is poiting... So how can I have my old ubuntu installation back?? I still have the old root.disk.

Jul 4, 2011I decided it was time to reinstall Windows 7 because it became increasingly slow. I know that there's a different solution to solve this problem, but as a user I'm just more satisfied with the noob friendliness of Windows. However, I know that it has its drawbacks so I had a dual boot setup with Wubi (30GB). My old configuration was as follows:
C: partition of size ~80GB with Windows 7 x64 installed
D: partition of size ~400GB with data and a wubi ubuntu at D:/ubuntu
So what I did was this:
- Backup all my personal files and D:/ubuntu on a external hdd
- Wipe the partitions using the windows installer
- Create a C: of 100GB and a D: of 380GB
- install windows 7 x64 on the C: partition
Now I would like to restore my backup of the old D:/ubuntu to a working dual boot system. I realize I may have missed some opportunities and the data may be gone, but I only found out about that when it was too late. I have tried installing wubi, and replacing the new ubuntu folder with the old one, but this did not work.

I have also tried replacing only the root.disk file, with the same result. I searched for other people's solutions, but they did not seem to work in my case.

Nov 6, 2010I installed through Wubi and in update manager 10.10 has appeared,
I have two questions:
1) Will this install in the Wubi directory? (c://ubuntu) or do i have to partition it first? If i do, please tell me a link how because the one i followed on the wiki said it didn't support 10.04 wubi. I would prefer to upgrade the Wubi install though
2) Will upgrading remove any of my user files? I installed themes i want to keep, and i wouldn't want to loose them.

Before quitting my job I have made a simple copy of the root.disk file, thinking I could restore it easily later.
Now I would restore this system on a Virtual Machine (with Virtual Box)
Have you got an idea how i could do this??
(I already tryied to install another wubi on a virtualized Windows 7, the install complete but I can't see ubuntu in the boot loader...)

Jun 7, 2011i started ubuntu from 9.04 now using 10.10 on my laptop. problem started when my laptop motherboard got bad beyond repair, and i had installed ubuntu 10.10 on it along with windows 7 (grub, dual boot). now i have pc running windows 7 and installed ubuntu 10.10 using wubi. i want all the settings of my laptop ubuntu 10.10 (programs installed, themes, softwares other configurations etc) to be transferred to this new ubuntu (installed using wubi) on my pc. how to do that? i have attached my laptop hard disk to my pc and am able to boot that installation on my pc, but now i have decided to remove laptop hard disk and use the same settings on pc hard disk.

Oct 16, 2010I just updated my ubuntu 10.10 installation inside windows (wubi) and after that I shut down my computer. Later on I switched it on again and was unable to boot ubuntu. Ususally I first get the 'Windows boot menu' and after i select ubuntu i get the grub menu. Now, when I select ubuntu in the windows boot menu I dont get grub after that but instead the computer restarts. Is there any way to fix this issue without reinstalling ubuntu.

May 25, 2011I've been using Ubuntu NR 10.04 LTS for almost 1 years now with dual-boot with Windows XP by Wubi and I had great time using it. Now I want to experience the full potential of Ubuntu by creating another partition just for Ubuntu alone since I heard Wubi makes a lot of trouble and works slower than independent Ubuntu install.
Here's my question. Should I really create another partition to get full potential of Ubuntu or should I stick with wubi? I haven't got any problem running Ubuntu with Wubi but my video playback sometimes gone haywire which didn't happen in windows especially .mkv files
If I should create a partition, how do I want to shrink Drive C: to get enough free space for another partition? Mine was Windows XP so it doesn't have shrink option in Disk Managament unlike Vista/7.
And last question... Can Ubuntu run Window games or MMORPG smoothly like Counter Strike and WarcraftIII? I did try to play it before but it run too slower in Ubuntu. I used Netbook Eee PC 900HA, 2GB RAM, dual-boot Windows XP Home Edition with Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 Lucid Lnyx LTS.
General :: Best Distro For Least Amount Of Disk Errors
Aug 26, 2010I have been having a lot of problems with disk errors and want to find a solution or more stable distro. I can not post the link yet since I am new but it is in the Ubuntu section of this forum and titled "Hibernate or spin down or hard shutdown causes errors." I am running Ubuntu 10.4 64bit on an AMD64 2.2gh.
I have been doing my research about distros and know a bit about what is going on with Linux. Sort of transcending past newbie I think. But I want to know what is the most stable distro for the least amount of Disk errors, or how to get ubuntu not to have so many errors. Maybe install the 32bit version? I want something fast and simple where I can run gimp/inkscape/openoffice/and maybe some of the video editing packages like Kino/piviti/cinerella.
Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Broke After Wubi Upgrade / Sort It?
Aug 18, 2010I beleive I had version 9.x installed. I upgraded once and everything was fine. I went the upgrade manager again and it found some more upgrades. The upgrade messed with grub. It then told me there were no new upgrades. Then I rebooted and it says
Try (hd0,0): NTFS5
Then the screen clears and there is some text I can't read and then it says command not found. Then it reboots.
Is there a way to fix this?
If not is there a way to recover the files from the disk image file.

Nov 27, 2010I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 on our home theater PC through a wubi installation. Yesterday the system update installed a new kernel and today there is a problem booting the computer so I'm reluctantly using Windoze to type this. there isn't much information: the computer has always booted fine before the kernel update. When I select Ubuntu in the boot menu the screen goes black and the computer restarts. No error messages, no GRUB menu, just a blank screen before restart.

Ubuntu :: Distro Upgrade Gone Wrong?
Oct 23, 2010I upgraded Netbook edition from Lucid to Maverick, and it's gone horribly wrong. It may be because I had set up the a Gnome session in Lucid so that I could add and remove applets to panel in while still having the netbook session layout.
After distro upgrade I ended up with a hybrid system with both the unity launcher AND the Lucid-style UNE launcher. Unity does not recognise any of my installed software, e.g open office or bibus in "Office". UNE launcher does. There is also no option of Gnome session at login, only Desktop and Netbook!

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic (wubi Install) Won't Boot After Dist-upgrade?
Jan 11, 2010i have Karmic installed with Wubi inside a Vista NTFS filesystem. Yesterday i did an apt-get dist-upgrade and Karmic never booted again. It won't even show the grub kernel list, it just shows some really quick text that vanishes before i can even figure out what it is and then drops to some sort of grub shell and then i can't figure out what to do.
I could boot a livecd and mount my karmic install and everything seems fine, the filesystem is clean and all that. But how do i fix it so it can boot again?
Does anyone here know wtf happened? Was there a bad upgrade or something?
Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Wubi Upgrade Failed / Freezes At Battery Check?
May 6, 2010I have a Wubi installation, and the upgrade to 10.04 froze. I didn't note down the point at which it froze.
When I tried to reboot, I got the grub screen, and when selecting Ubuntu I get lots of text messages scrolling by, but it freezes at battery check.
The machine boots fine into Vista.
Rather than spend a lot of time trying to figure out what went wrong in the upgrade, my inclination is to delete the Wubi installation from within Windows, and then do a fresh install of 10.04 under Wubi. Is this feasible/sensible?
There are a handful of files I would like to salvage from the prior installation, however. Could I do that with a Live CD since the prior installation was under Wubi?
Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Lucid From Wubi Install To Real Partition?
Jun 4, 2010I have been using Lucid Lynx for almost 2 weeks and have got everything working, thanks to the "ubuntu" spirit in this forum. Now I am ready to upgrade my Wubi install to its separate partition. I have searched the forum and googled to find a way to do this, but I am still stuck.
I used lvpm (despite knowing that there is no confirmation of its working on Lucid Lynx), it didn't work. The installation happened alright but it wasn't able to show up the login screen (GDM?). It was stuck around the screen before that (Xsplash?).
There is this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591 that explains this process very well but remains silent on Lucid Lynx version.
I am sure there must be many other first timers who wanted to get their feet wet the easy way using wubi and would like to make it "permament" OS on their computers.
Is there anyone who can suggest if :
1. There is any way I can still use lvpm to transfer wubi install to separate installation (Ubuntu 10.04 release) ?
2. Any other way I can do this ??

Feb 19, 2010I installed Koala 9.10 with Wubi, and have liked it enough to give it a "native" installation on a partition. I've been looking around at forums, and it seems the most attractive way, with LVPM, hasn't been tested officially with 9.10, and I can't find a post of anyone that has.
So, my question is, does anyone know the best way to upgrade my install to its own partition? My drive currently has 2 primary partitions (main Windows Vista OS, and a recovery) and one extended with a logical drive. I don't know whether to try the LVPM method, or try to just uninstall Wubi and install 9.10 after from the Live CD. But, the reason I went the Wubi route in the first place was the install/Live CD would hang when I got to the screen with the options to check the install disk (I had previously checked the hash, and it was fine), proceed without changing disk, etc. I think that is a problem with the install getting confused with my multiple drives/card readers, and not being able to find the correct one. Wubi had a similar problem giving me something like "please insert disk into drive X:", and I would have to just click over and over, each time X changing from one drive letter/number to the next, until the install just continued when it found the right drive.

I tried using a recovery boot through Grub and can see that the boot process hangs after outputting:
