I would like to uninstall my current opensuse 11.3 installation and start again with a different distro. How do I go about doing this?
View 4 RepliesI think the problems are connected to the ATI drivers I've installed. I used the ones I got off of the ATI graphics driver repository specifically for OpenSuse. I would like to try the latest drivers off ATI's website again. I understand they are much more recent than the ones in the repository. The first time I tried them they didn't work, though they have worked in the past for me on a previous incarnation of this system. Do I have to uninstall the current drivers first? If so, how do I be certain I have uninstalled all that is necessary since I didn't keep track of the details in the first place? I can find some of them using the search function but perhaps not all. I would imagine there is a way to do that using YaST since I got everything off that one repository.
which option in the ATI graphics driver installer (ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_6.run) should I use? I'm using 11.2-64 on an Intel based system. Will the 32 bit drivers work on a 64 system? As I noted, the automatic option doesn't work for me. From reading some of the other posts here it seems perhaps I should start in level 3 and use the cli from there. That's not what I did before. Or should I try the latest 11.3 milestone since that seems to have better graphics card support?
I think the title says it all really - I've installed Mint onto a Acer aspire 5315 laptop. Its a dual boot system using Vista Basic. Grub works perfectly and to be honest Mint is great. really enjoying playing and learning. My problem is that the laptop overheats when using Mint - the cpu fan doesn't cut in and the laptop shuts down to protect the system. According to a swift google this seems to occur with mint (possibly particularly with Acer's) and maybe with other distro's too. However I'd like to keep trying to see if i can find one that works.
So my rather obvious newbie question is can I just get another distro dvd and install this onto the partition containing mint thus deleting the previous install? If I did this would Grub show the new distro ok or would it keep searching for Mint. I have a back up so if all else fails I can reinstall everything but that will have to wait till I get home
For various reasons I want to completely uninstall Suse 11.3, including the stuff in GRUB, and start again,without upsetting my other distro which is also in the GRUB options. This so I can do a fresh clean inatall when I'm ready.I know I could just reformat the relevant partitions, but I guess that doesn't deal with the GRUB issue?

For instance, I don't need Orage, most of the games, the file sharing apps, etc., but do want Ubuntu Tweak, Audacious, Audacity, etc. Is it possible to do this from a GUI in a reasonably straightforward manner?I've played around with remastersys and ISO Master. The former apparently doesn't do what I want, since it only works on the distro I already have installed, and I can't figure out how to get the latter to work. The instructions on the community documentation involve more command line work than I feel comfortable with, plus you can't edit a 32-bit iso on a 64-bit machine, and I need to be able do to that. I want to set up the distro to run on my 32-bit netbook.

View 5 Replies View RelatedIs there a simple way to delete an existing Linux Distro install so you can install a new version or distro in the partitions where a current one resides? We have several laptops, all of which are at least dual boot with Windows and with a Linux Distro. A few have Windows and two Linux Distros.
What we want and need to do, without disturbing the Windows install is simply remove a current Linux install and replace it with another install, a simple way. We cannot find a simple Partition command of eliminate install or install over existing install. Since the movement in Linux community for four years now is "easy", "simple", and "user friendly" you would think Ubuntu project would by now have a simple, low risk way of doing this. The delete and expand specific partitions method is very risky (to the O/S installs one wished to keep intact) and requires more partition study than all but a few people have interest or time to invest in.
Anyone know of a simple way to replace an install. What puzzles us is why Ubuntu has not come up with a simple command that allows users to replace one Ubuntu version with another, or at least uninstall back to a previous install when a user finds the new version tanks his system and requires hours of study to figure out how to get his basic hardware up and running.

I recently did some troubleshooting on a USB wireless dongle hooked up to my Mint distro. I need the USB wireless to access a home DSL wireless modem out to the Internet. The wireless DSL is on 192.168.0.1
I also have a 10/100 ethernet NIC in the computer, for non-wireless connections. The wired ethernet is all 192.168.1.1. I noticed in /var/log/syslog that there are numerous "DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67" messages.
Since eth0 has a hard-coded IP, I dunno why DHCP is trying deal with it. Can I turn off DHCP activity against eth0? How to do that?
Basically I have been completely unable to install any distro bar those 2 (OpenSuSE 11.2 and Mandriva can't remember what version).
I tried Ubuntu lucid lynx and Maverick Meerkat, Mint 8 (helena) and 9 (isadora), fedora 12 and 13 and even....windows (I know that's not linux but meh).
When attempting to install Ubuntu and Mint I get the fabled errno 5 error. I have tried using 4 different optical drives, I burnt it at slowest possible speed I even used a usb to boot it and still somehow copped the errno 5 error (which is somewhat humorous when it tells me to make sure my cd/dvd drive is ok and i'm using a usb stick) I tried it on 2 different HDD's (both in this computer) 1 a 40gb the other a 1TB. I tried using sony DVD's, Verbatim DVD's and TDK DVD's I even tried using Verbatim Cd's.
When I attempt to install Fedora I get a (sorry as I can not remember the exact error message) cannot copy image from live cd error (or something along those lines) at around 54%.
With windows (again I know it's not linux but it might give some insight into what is actually going on) I get a blue screen of death before first boot EVERY SINGLE TIME and then it just continues to happen, this was on xp and 7.
My only idea I have as to what is happening is that my computer hates me and just likes driving me up the wall for kicks.
Lastly and ever so slightly off topic, if I manage to get another distro to install how do I stop it from killing my bootloader and how do I make that OS appear in my current bootloader.

I want to uninstall my openSuSE 11.2 from my desktop PC. I am currently running openSuSE on one of my other laptops, openSolaris on the other laptop, and I am going to run ubuntu on my desktop PC. I want to learn how to uninstall the openSuSE 11.2 without running a liveCD from another LINUX distro to do so. So my question is "How can someone uninstall openSuSE from within openSuSE itself ?"
The other reason is that my Windows XP on that HDD has had a massive failure and I want to wipe my hardrive completely clean and start anew!

I have a lot of problems touchpad not working properly, wireless, it crashes. It looks good, but I need a distro which will work on my dell Vostro 1700. I have found Ubuntu (gnome) best for my laptop, but I would like to try (KDE) something more polished like OpenSuse. A distro which works like a charm.

I tried to install mono so that I could use an application. When it went to install libgtk2.0-cil, everything broke. I've tried to reinstall, purge, remove, and each time it fails. I've gone through a few iterations of trying to get things to remove cleanly to start fresh, so there are a few packages that are dependent on libgtk2.0-cil causing issues as well.. but thats to be expected. code...
I tried, and cannot locate the files it notes; `/usr/share/cli-common/packages.d/policy.2.6.gtk-dotnet.installcligac. I tried to create them real quick with touch, it removes what I make but still does not uninstall and still gives the err.
Can anyone offer assistance on removing this so that I can start fresh?
I've decided to try Debian Lenny, after i succefully installed it without any problems there appears to be a problem - after loading the services and etc, my monitor turns off with a floating message saying it cannot display the current resolution, and that i should set it to 1280x1024@60Hz.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter a fresh install of Slackware64-current could not get X to start correctly with the nouveau driver. When ever X started display was scrambled. Only kde would partially work with desktop effects enabled, but very slow. Without desktop effects enable kde was also scrambled. After trying several things and googling came up with the following. To get X to work created a nouveau-kms.conf file in /etc/modprobe.d with the following text.
Code: options nouveau noaccel=1 The one draw back to this solution is that Kde will not start with desktop effects enabled. Hopefully this will help someone else with similar problems. Maybe someone else has a better solution. video card: Nvidia Geforce 6150se nForce430

Now I tried to reboot the system and verify the speed of the all new packages, but KDM don't start! When I call KDM, it shines a little, show the mouse pointer and backs to term. When I call the XDM its a little different, it let me put my user and password, but after back to term too...

Now, I'd like installing Windows 7 using these sda2 and sda4 partitions without corrupting current Linux installation and its GRUB2 setting(I'd likt to reconfigure the GRUB2 after successfully installing the Windows image, for the dual-boot).
I switched today to slackware-current on one of my desktops to play with it and ran directly into a problem.
Since ages my lilo.conf has two entries for slackware. One for runlevel 3 and one for runlevel 4.

Since the upgrade this is no more possible because I get a kernel panic as soon as udevadm trigger is called. The stack says something about an unknown boot option. Because that i removed the append lines from my lilo.conf and i was able to boot the system. The crash happens when udev is called from within the ramdisk and afterwards. I tried both.
My question is now. Is this a bug in udev or expected? I have this setup since at least 5 years and had never problems with that. What do I have to do to be able to select the runlevel at boot time?
Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).
LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.
I would like to remove openSUSE (11.3) from my dual boot (/Windows) system. In the old days, the install CD used to have an option for that, but now my DVD doesn't have anything, or perhaps I overlooked?
View 7 Replies View Relatedif the answer to this is glaringly obvious/is written in windows terminology or mentioned elsewhere but searching has got me nowhere. I don't know what I did to the installation, but I'll be honest I added repositories when amarok said I needed files to enable mp3 capability. Don't ask me how because I can't remember, it seemed to take forever and now nothing seems to work properly amarok won't even work.
What I want to do is just reinstall or use some sort system restore. Is ther an easy way of doing it?

I have just installed OPENSUSE 11.3 from a CD to a computer running WIN XP. The installation completed and I got to a desktop. I then shut down. When I restarted the computer with the installation CD removed from the drive, I got the message "missing operating system". I ran the installation again, and have left it running. As near as I can tell, the WIN Partition is still intact, but I'm afraid to shut it down for fear I once again will not be able to access either system.

For example, if I remove Firefox, Chromium will appear in its place and vice versa. This has got to be one of the weirdest bugs I've ever seen on Ubuntu! So, how can I uninstall both web browsers?
View 6 Replies View RelatedUpgraded to 'current' and now have a series of problems. First, when trying to 'startx' to fire up KDE I get the following error message, "Could not start d-bus. Can you call qdbus?" If I try Xfce it gives this similar message, "Failed to execute dbus-launch to autolaunch d-bus sessions. When logging in, but before entering the password this error message pops up:
'Dialups-check-enab'
'nologin-str'
'Configuration error - unknown item. (notify administrator)'
If I do try to start a PXE Installation, the PXE Bootsystem loads the kernel, and
I guess it trys to start to load the initrd, but then it froze, i need to reset the computer. On the TFTP Server (aftp) I see that it trys to resend the initrd files and runs into a time out.
Ive the problem on 2 maschines, both with the same Motherboard (ASUS M4N78).
And the PXEinstallation of OpenSuSE 11.3 works fine, without any problems.
