wondering which of the Linux Distro you would recommend for a beginner to start hands on with? Also, can you provide links where I can download Linux ISOs.
View 5 RepliesThere are several articles, questionairres and forum threads around the net helping newbies to Linux choose a distro, but there appear to be none which specifically help people choose one suitable for design, studio or home recording.
- I'm a professional graphic designer who also dabbles in music production in my own time.
- I currently use Vista 64 on a reasonably powerful HP desktop.
- I'm not afraid of dabbling in basic programming, but overall I'm a beginner in that area.
My criteria:
- A OS that runs smoothly and reliably.
- Has a concise range of applications, but includes the best of the best. Quality over quanity.
- Has good hardware support.I don't want to spend weeks trying to get my audio interface, scanner and graphics tablet working.
- Is very secure. The main reason I'm moving to Linux is because my laptop eventually became riddled with Trojans despite my best efforts at keeping it clean.
- Preferably supports 64 bit.
- Looks slick (yes I know that's a bit superficial and it's not necessarily what Linux is about, but if I'm gonna be staring at a screen all day every day it might as well be attractive).
I've done a bit of research, and looked elsewhere on this forum for advice but it's strangely lacking (or I'm missing it). So far Ubuntu Studio, Sabayon, ArtistX and PureDyne look pretty promising. GNUartist, Open Artist and AV Linux also seem worth considering.Obviously I'm prepared to try a few different ones to see which one i gel with. I just wondered if my above criteria screams out for one or other of the available distributions, so that I can have a good starting point.

The laptop has a pcmcia wifi card, 4gb hard drive space, 128mb ram, and is a Pentium II 400mhz. Can you recommend a linux distro for me? I won't use any features other than freenx and wifi, so i'm sure this laptop is fast enough for that.

I've decided that I want to study linux and learn as much as I can about it. I dont hate windows or OSX but I really like problem solving and using the command line. Which I used to love with DOS.
I'm going for a complete career change so I want to get certified in Linux by taking the LPI test so I can show employers that I have some computer certification(In Japan it really helps). Now, I'm studying commands and trying to do simple tasks(just playing now) but want to get into it more.
Question: What books do you recommend for a begginner with just dos and windows problem solving experience to start learning linux? Also, what programing language should I pick up a bit for linux?
I have sendmail setup with sasl and multiple domains.I'm sure there is an easy fix for this but I can send emails to anyuser@<anyofmyvirtualdomains.dom> and it will be accepted. I'm just trying to cut down on any confusion that may occur later. Is it possible "restrict" or classify a user into a particular domain? I've setup virtusertable and aliases but no luck in accomplishing my goal.I've searched to find no particular information on this.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI like many have fought for years to get videos playing, easily. I've had them all, MPlayer, SMPlayer, KMPlayer, xine, kaffeine, etc. One will play the video, but not the audio and another will play the audio and not the video.. Most will do nothing at all... MPlayer was the best for years, 8 years I think I've been using it. but in the last couple of years. I found some post here, at opensuse, but can not find it again, that led me to VLC. The link, I believe, led me to sourceforge and after searching PacMan and openSuSE, In Yahoo I found this VLC media player wiki. I was able in openSuSE 11.4 YaST2 to search (including descriptions) to find and install it. (I think you have to have pacman configured as a repository, but not sure, I always use pacman and what I saw leads me to believe that this is a pacman package). Anyways, the main installation was easy enough, but I did not have a GUI (frontend) so I looked some more. this may be where I searched descriptions also. Well without the GUI, you can play .mov and .avi files via the mozilla plugin by opening the file via mozilla's (firefox) File> Open command, you just don't have any controls. However, there is a frontend for it and as soon as my other system comes back up (for some reason it, for the first time ever, is not letting me launch Yast2. I'm hoping I installed some update that required a restart, so as soon as I'm able, I'll edit and tell what the frontend is, was.. I needed to get this down while thinking about it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedLubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).
LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.
I have a linux box set up as a multi-purpose server for my home with three Windows client PC's. The linux box is based on a slightly modified Slackware 9.0 distribution using Linux 2.4.20 and an unfortinately old, slow AMD processor with a miserable 512Kb RAM. The linux box serves the CIFS file system to the Windows boxes, runs the SQUID HTTP proxy, the Apache web server, a print server, does masquerading, mail serving and a very effective firewall using iptables.
This system, although slow, has run perfectly for several years.Let me say that again - This system works perfectly.I had decided that now is the time to upgrade the hardware, so I bought a Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard which has two 1Gb network interfaces on it, an ASUS 256Mb PCI-E display card, 2Gb of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Core2-Quad processor and a bunch of 500Gb SATA drives to set up a RAID5 array (but I intend that the system boot off one of several 40Gb PATA drives I have).I set up the processor, motherboard, display card, RAM, a SATA DVD Drive and a 40Gb PATA hard disk in a "breadboard" layout and installed distro 13.1, being careful to set up the static IP for the local network, dhcpcd to get an IP address from the cable modem (my internet connection) and to enable ip_forward in the network configuration.
Then I installed a script invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.local which installed all the SAME iptables rules as my old Linux box. There was one minor glitch when I had to change 8 occurrences of "-d ! $LOCAL_NET to" "! --destination $LOCAL_NET" but that was no problem. I also set up /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , the BIND server files etc. etc. exactly as in the old box.
I am able to ping mirror.aarnet.edu.au (this is at the heart of Australia's internet hub network - if it's down the whole bloody thing is down) and have the system find the correct IP from the designated nameservers and contact that server with a return trip time of 35ms. I am able to run a telnet session from one of the Windows boxes and edit files on the Linux server. So both network interfaces work and I've got them the right way around.I am able to run FTP on one of the Windows boxes and connect through to mirror.aarnet.edu.au, although it seems to hang when I try a DIR (but then so does the old linux system).
I wanted my final install of openSuse 11.3 to be, and I had chosen Gnome. Well, after a few days, I got bored with it again since I've done so much with it on other Distros, so I installed openSuse 11.3 with KDE last night lol. (Reinstalling Linux distros is just so much fun lol).Anyways, I'm currently running my KDE 4.4 Suse desktop and would like to know what some of you guys have for customizations. I'd like to make my computer real nice with cool themes, icons, widgets and whatever else I can change.
So please, just respond to this thread if you have done any customizations, simple or complex, and let us know how you like it and possibly how you did it! I'd love to hear all of your guys' feedback and look forward to all of the responses. I appreciate all of your time!
Currently I have a 500gb drive with Ubuntu on half of it. The other half is a soon to be Win7 install. I just picked up an identical drive for real cheap last week and I am interested in advice for going about setting up a RAID 1 for redundancy. My first road block is do I want software or hardware RAID? Is this even possible with a dualboot system? If hardware RAID is the way to go does anyone have a particular brand or model they could recommend?
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor as long as I've used Linux I've had trouble getting my wireless connection to work properly. I've tried about 4 different cards and now I'm using D-Link DWL G510 which even says Linux supported on the box. It installed right out of the box and when I have a connection it is fast enough; not as fast as the other computers, laptops, tablets or phones but reasonably fast.
The connection is however unstable and I often have no connection at all. It very strange actually because as time goes it seems to get more unstable, both since boot-up and since fresh install. I'm tired of this and since we got a new router which support wireless N I can just as well get a new card. Can you recommend any? It needs to be able to handle WPA-encryption.
I'm using the latest Centos on an older IBM server which only has USB1.1 ports, it works great and is very reliable. I would really like to add a USB2.0 card to the system. Can anyone recommend a reliable PCI card which will work with Centos, preferably one which does not require any special drivers to be loaded.

View 1 Replies View RelatedCan anyone recommend an easily usable media transfer application? That is, I want to copy audio files from my CDs, compress them if possible, perhaps organize & store them on disk, and transfer the ones I want to listen to to a media player. (Currently a Zen Vision:M).
The basic problem (there seem to be lots of ramifications) I've had with Creative's software and the Windows media player is that there doesn't seem to be any obvious way to sensibly organize the audio: it's all based on "albums", "artists", and "songs", where I listen to audio performances. So what I'd like to do is to copy say the two disks of Macbeth (which I can do, but it goes into about a dozen Track xxx files in a directory for each disk), somehow organize that into a unit that I can simply copy to the player and play from beginning to end. This seems to me to be a very basic sort of function, but nothing I've found will do it, at least in a way that I can discover.
I am a newbee and am not too sure, but anyway, here it goes. What would you recommend as a partition setup for a laptop with 1gb ram and 160gb hdd? Please note, the setup needs to be able to keep all documents, settings and programs on updates and whatnot.
