Slackware :: Upgraded To 'current' - Error "Could Not Start D-bus. Can You Call Qdbus" When Trying To 'startx' To Fire Up KDE
Feb 10, 2010
Upgraded to 'current' and now have a series of problems. First, when trying to 'startx' to fire up KDE I get the following error message, "Could not start d-bus. Can you call qdbus?" If I try Xfce it gives this similar message, "Failed to execute dbus-launch to autolaunch d-bus sessions. When logging in, but before entering the password this error message pops up:
'Dialups-check-enab'
'nologin-str'
'Configuration error - unknown item. (notify administrator)'

I recently upgraded my system from 13.0 to -current using slackpkg. However, I did not go through warnings on the web regarding the exact procedure to be followed (first running install-new and then upgrade-all). I just did a upgrade-all and then rebooted the system. And then the system would not boot and gives a libblkid.so.1 related error. Upon googling, I found suggestions as to booting from the install dvd 13.0, installing the old version of e2fsprogs and then reboot and doing the neccessary changes [URL]... Me being a linux newbie, don't know how exactly to do these things. Can anybody direct me with the list of commands/things to be done to solve this issue?

I have a new install of Slack 13 and upgrading to current will break a lot of things for my 4 year old son (he's a gnome guy, what can I say). I will be using this machine too, and I NEED KDE, but of course the stock KDE packages are unstable to say the least. I know I've seen people talking of downloading upgraded kde packages for slackware 13, but when I google, I find a lot of things complaining about the stock KDE and of course Eric's packages for current.

Slackware 12.0 (GNU/linux kernel 2.6) I am said slackware is very stable (I suppose this means it has few bugs). However, every time I run startx to start the graphical interface, for a brief moment I can see (just before the screen is put in graphical mode) a lot of error messages. How can this be? I use slack 12 a lot and have reinstalled this distro many times. However the described behavior always repeats.

After a fresh install of Slackware64-current could not get X to start correctly with the nouveau driver. When ever X started display was scrambled. Only kde would partially work with desktop effects enabled, but very slow. Without desktop effects enable kde was also scrambled. After trying several things and googling came up with the following. To get X to work created a nouveau-kms.conf file in /etc/modprobe.d with the following text.
Code: options nouveau noaccel=1 The one draw back to this solution is that Kde will not start with desktop effects enabled. Hopefully this will help someone else with similar problems. Maybe someone else has a better solution. video card: Nvidia Geforce 6150se nForce430

I am having a problem with my slackware version 12 server. I tried installing a new joomla theme from the rockettheme and its giving me the following error while loading the site.
Fatal error: Call to undefined function imagecreatefromjpeg()in /home/www/verticaltest/modules/mod_rokstories/thumbnail.inc.php on line 167
Thought it was a problem with gd library modules, but in info.php, its showing that gd is installed in the server. Pasting the result form info.php below..
If gd is installed, what should be the problem?

Now I tried to reboot the system and verify the speed of the all new packages, but KDM don't start! When I call KDM, it shines a little, show the mouse pointer and backs to term. When I call the XDM its a little different, it let me put my user and password, but after back to term too...

I switched today to slackware-current on one of my desktops to play with it and ran directly into a problem.
Since ages my lilo.conf has two entries for slackware. One for runlevel 3 and one for runlevel 4.
Code:
Since the upgrade this is no more possible because I get a kernel panic as soon as udevadm trigger is called. The stack says something about an unknown boot option. Because that i removed the append lines from my lilo.conf and i was able to boot the system. The crash happens when udev is called from within the ramdisk and afterwards. I tried both.
My question is now. Is this a bug in udev or expected? I have this setup since at least 5 years and had never problems with that. What do I have to do to be able to select the runlevel at boot time?

I'm getting an md5sum error on two files in the latest slackware64-current:
This problem doesn't appear to be due to my download.
The 32-bit slackware-current has no md5sum errors.

When I run xload, it gives the following:
Code:
xload
Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font
Error: Aborting: no font found
It's an up-to-date Slackware64 current, with only ruby and poppler downgraded to 13.0, but I don't think either would do it.
It's not a big deal, but I wonder if it might be a sign of some bigger problem.

I am trying to build "LMMS - Linux MultiMedia Studio" on Slackware Current.
CMake is halting on "printf" lines in various .cpp files. I am assuming it's a conflict with the newer GCC? Does anyone know a work around for this issue?
I've tried commenting out the printf lines but I think they may be needed in the application. Apparently there are lots .cpp using the printf call.

since an update to the latest -current version, it comes to an error inside the init script from the initrd.gz on my system, shortly behind the scan for encrpyted devices inside lvm containers.
The message is
Code:
mdadm: No arrays found in config file
1 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg" now activeash: missing ] mount: mounting crypt-vg-root on /mnt/failed: No such file or directory ERROR: No /sbin/init found on rootdev (or not mounted). Trouble ahead. You can try to fix it. Type "exit" when things are done. If i then unlock the crypted root device within the lvm, boot continues. I think this is a bug, because configuration did not change, and it worked before the update.

When I run frozen-bubble, I get this error:
Code:
lysender@darkstar:~$ frozen-bubble
Can't locate Locale/gettext.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.12.2/i486-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.12.2 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.12.2/i486-linux-thread-multi
I have updated to current as of Jan 2 but I'm not really sure when the problem started since I only play with frozen-bubble sometimes.
Will rebuilding fronzen-bubble solve it? Haven't tried it yet as of now.

I installed slackware 13.1 x86_64 bit with multilib, and its been about a month already, I'm really enjoying slackware but I am being troubled with my nvidia card, and I need to get my 3D acceleration working. And I've been looking around the net for information and kept on trying to make my nvidia card to work but to no avail. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.
