Lately I noticed that something seems to be blocking various audio controls - mixer mostly. I can't access mixer window from taskbar, my keyboard volume knob doesn't work, mute too. But - all the generated events are there, because when the problem goes away (usually in the range of 10-30 seconds), all the events that I generated (volume up/down, mute) are applied.
Straced kmix startup. And it looks like it was waitinf for some information from dbus - i see it sent and received some messages to fd=3 (which is earlier connected to /tmp/dbus-something), and then it waits 21 seconds!, and then it gets new message from dbus, message looks like:
[Code]...
It contains string "introspection" - no idea what it is about, but perhaps it could be related? I am very willing to do additional tests/straces/whatever to solve the problem,

I had created 4 partitions of my 320 gb harddrive.
First 40 gb was reserved for xp , next 4 gb was swap partition , next 20 gb was linux main partition, and after it there is free space. I first installed linux on 3rd partition. I later installed win xp on the first partition. My laptop directly boots in xp . I don't see Debian listed even after pressing F8.
How do I re-access debian linux ?

I like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).
I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.
I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.
The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.
As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse
Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?
On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.

I can see the workgroup of Windows Network from Ubuntu, but when i put the username and password of Windows 7 from Ubuntu it doesn't get any access to the shared folders. I don't know where the problem is for not getting the username and password accepted or authorization.
I even tried turning off the password requirement in Windows 7, but no luck.
My Documents are shared on Windows 7
Something must be missing cuz I can see the Windows 7 computer on Ubuntu but the login fails all the time.

i am running 11.04 for my laptop(64bit)(inb4 use 10.10 if your a newb).anyways I got Fallout New Vegas for my home computer(not laptop)(windows 7 32-bit) and I am enjoying the except we have the worst mouse/keyboard setup ever. So I am interested in Remote accessing my windows computer from my laptop and game Fallout on that(is that even possible) also, I really do not want anything to do with WINE so putting it on my ubuntu is not desired.I have basic knowledge of windows and even more basic of linux knowledge. So I can open the window for remote access.I even have the IP of my other computer.. It even recognizes the domain but pops up with this window when I try to click it.

I was wondering if anyone has any idea how to install a window manager without root access? I'm trying to install Fluxbox. I unpacked the .tar.gz and ran ./configure followed by make. I'm unsure of the next step- usually I would just do 'make install' but as I don't have root access I cannot do this. I found this file which I think may have something to do with the process that should come next, it seems to have some lines about window managers (~/.xsession):
[Code]...
61 directories, 868 files I am running CentOS version 5. I hope that's some information for someone to have some ideas?

my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

I have PC with following specs:
Intel E7500 CPU / Intel G31 Motherboard
Kingston 800MHz 2GB RAM
Hitachi 500 GB SATA HDD + Seagate 160 GB SATA HDD
I initially had only 500 GB HDD. I installed two installations of Windows 7 Ultimate - one 32-bit and one 64-bit installations. Both working fine.
Later on I installed the 160 GB HDD and installed Fedora 13 in it in a partition. The rest space of the 160GB I am using with Windows for storing data.
Now, the boot entries of both Windows installations are in the Grub Loader of F13. Means, if I remove the 160GB HDD, I cannot boot into my Windows installations.
Now I want to remove the 160 GB HDD and install a new 2TB hard-drive. That way, I cannot log into my Windows. And I do not want to lose the Linux installation also.
How can I remove the 160 GB HDD and install a new one without sacrificing my Windows installations?
OR...Is it possible that I can copy complete image of F13 on to the new HDD, so that things are same for the Windows installations?

My Main goal is to get to important data in the HDD which I hope can be backed up in a USB so I can then reformat and reinstall Ubuntu.
Ubuntu version 9.04 (Jaunty)
Pentium 4 PC Desktop
20gig Hardrive
Dedicated Ubuntu, no dual boot or anything, the HDD is fully for Ubuntu only and partitioned that way. 1st Problem: I encountered an error while using Ubuntu and OOffice, so I restarted. Right after the restart I got an error:
[code]...
I researched this in the forums, and the suggestions are to boot with a LiveCD and fix. Unfortunately I have just burned a liveCD now, though I was able to make a liveUSB, and plugged it in. Problem is that during the boot up of LiveUSB, I encountered another Error:
[code]...
Above is problem no. 2 At this point I gave up trying to recover Ubuntu, so I'm just in data recovery mode. My goal as mentioned is to get to the files, back them up and start from scratch.......

Once upon a time i hid the boot loader by setting the default boot to windows 7 and the waiting time to 0. However, i can't seem to access it anymore... When i hold shift on boot, nothing happens. When i hold esc, my computer starts beeping like mad if i hold it too soon, but if i hold it later, it just goes to the windows boot thing and reboots. So.. is there anything i can do other than downloading the whole OS again and making a live CD? (don't have the old one anymore)

with that said i burned fedora 8, 10, and 11 checked the sha1 verified everything was fine i had originally installed fedora 8 on an old pc i had from windows XP without any problems messed with it some, upgraded to 10 again no problems. tired to update 11 got a message about ext3 not found ext4 not found, re installed 10 the loader loads up now i have a blank screen with a cursor it the left hand corner
again i had 10 installed fine prior to all this can any one point me in the right direction to solve this issue or am i way over my head trying to figure this stuff out. i have spent 3 days searching these forums.
i'm just not quite sure what i need to do. oh, i tried to install 8 again and it wouldn't take either. i think the 10 problem has something to do with the graphic driver it's a geforce 7400 nvidia and something to do with the grub, but like i said i get a blinking cursor and not quite sure how to access the grub or command line.

Is it possible to change my current nautilus window to have sudo capabilities,? e.g. to delete locked files. It may be lazy but if it takes a lot of navigation then it would be handy to somehow activate sudo from the open window without the terminal command (gksudo nautilus) which always begins at root.

When I installed 64 bit OpenSUSE Gnome 11.4 today on an ext4 primary partition (sda4) from the Install DVD, it eliminated LinuxMint 9's entry from OpenSUSE'sGrub The 64 bit LinuxMint v. 9 (Isadora) is installed on an ext4 logical partition (sda9) inside an extended partition, but it doesn't appear in OpenSUSE's Grub (and now OpenSUSE 11.4 won't connect to the Internet - although the Live CD ran yesterday without a hitch).
I'm hoping that my fellow OpenSUSE users can help me regain access to my Isadora installation and hopefully, point me to a solution for the Internet access problem.

I've been using Ubuntu for a couple years, and have really enjoyed the experience. Recently though, I also felt like installing Arch Linux onto my laptop which already had a Vista/Ubuntu 10.04 partition. In doing so, I lost access to the Ubuntu partition on my hard drive. The Arch linux grub had replaced the Ubuntu grub.
So the main question is, does anyone know how I could re-access or re-install the original Ubuntu grub? If not, then can someone help me with adding a boot option in Arch's Grub? I've already tried some things, though obviously, none have worked so far.

I just updated to 10.04 LTS & I would like to edit my grub menu to get rid of the unneeded entries.
When I enter /etc/default/grub into terminal It gives me bash: /etc/default/grub: Permission denied.
From what I have read I just need to put # in front of what I don't want to see in the menu, but I'm unable to access the file to make the changes.
I would also like to make a backup of the file first before editing it.
