Ubuntu :: Grub Error And Can't Access HDD
Jan 5, 2011
My Main goal is to get to important data in the HDD which I hope can be backed up in a USB so I can then reformat and reinstall Ubuntu.
Ubuntu version 9.04 (Jaunty)
Pentium 4 PC Desktop
20gig Hardrive
Dedicated Ubuntu, no dual boot or anything, the HDD is fully for Ubuntu only and partitioned that way. 1st Problem: I encountered an error while using Ubuntu and OOffice, so I restarted. Right after the restart I got an error:
[code]...
I researched this in the forums, and the suggestions are to boot with a LiveCD and fix. Unfortunately I have just burned a liveCD now, though I was able to make a liveUSB, and plugged it in. Problem is that during the boot up of LiveUSB, I encountered another Error:
[code]...
Above is problem no. 2 At this point I gave up trying to recover Ubuntu, so I'm just in data recovery mode. My goal as mentioned is to get to the files, back them up and start from scratch.......

I just updated to 10.04 LTS & I would like to edit my grub menu to get rid of the unneeded entries.
When I enter /etc/default/grub into terminal It gives me bash: /etc/default/grub: Permission denied.
From what I have read I just need to put # in front of what I don't want to see in the menu, but I'm unable to access the file to make the changes.
I would also like to make a backup of the file first before editing it.

I have a dual boot system with ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7. Everything has been working fine for a a long time but yesterday I tried to delete an unused partition through the Disk Utility in ubuntu (System->Adminstration->Disk Utility) and everything was messed up. I used to get the "Grub error: Unknown filesystem". I managed to create an ubuntu bootable usb and followed some tutorials for fixing grub but all i managed to do is to get another error: "Grub error: No such disc". After some experimentation i got
"Grub stage 1.5" which gave me a grub> command prompt./dev/sda is the drive containing Windows and Ubuntu.
Code:
[ Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Grub 0.97 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive
in partition #6 for /boot/grub/stage2 and /boot/grub/menu.lst.

I am new to Linux. I have installed RHEL 5.4 on my PC with preloaded Windows XP.
Windows was set as the first boot kernel. So if i do not choose which OS to be loaded it will load Windows by Default.
Today I got an error saying GRub Loading Stage2 read error.

When I try and boot my Debian computer I get the messages: Grub Loading stage1.5. Grub loading, please wait... Error 15 Is there any way of recovering from this - or is it simply a fresh install? I was attempting an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and despite a few hurdles it looked like it was all happening. Got the new kernel loading, and the new grub. It looked as though grub2 was working so I ran the grub-remove-legacy-support command (something like that) and now my computer won't boot grub or Linux.
I'm assuming the MBR on my harddrive is lost, however I don't know what state the partition is in. I'm guessing that maybe this has been lost as well. I tried a few tools from the Ultimate Boot CD but nothing here was able to re-install my grub or boot from any partition or even mount my file-system. I'm fearing the worst but would like it confirmed before I blow it all away with a new install.

I've trawled the internet but can't seem to find the exact same issue, so I've made a new thread. So, I installed Ubuntu onto a 160gb drive. I have other drives in the system, but I disconnected them so that the system drive would be sda. Ubuntu installed perfectly with no issues whatsoever. I connected the other drives in the system, and again it booted up perfectly (although I can't remember whether the 160gb drive remained as sda or became sdd). Then I attached some extra drives temporarily to do some data shuffling.
This moved my system drive to become sdf. My computer booted fine multiple times like this, but when I was finished with the drives I rebooted and suddenly everything broke. For some reason my ubuntu installation showed up in the GRUB twice, and neither of them booted. So, I popped in the Live CD (which I'm using to type this post), and decided to update the grub. I chrooted into my system drive and ran update-grub, but it simply returned something like this:

I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:

I'm currently setting up a dell server with hardware raid 1 on sas 6r. i got 4 sas installed on the server and configured to raid 1 as stated below,
array 1:
slot 0 & 1
array 2:
slot 2 & 3
during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.

is it ever possible to do dual booting with grub(legacy) ever at all!. it is possible provided i take some pain, here is the link of that post [URL] i was coward and weak i didn't try that out then. but i did try it out. now so if u haven't seen the post .... I've installed Fedora 15 desktop(Gnome) with physical Logical volume called vg_fedora lv_root(ext4) ,lv_swap and lv_home(ext4), with 500MB /boot partition and had about 200GB free hard disk space ... so i wanted to install Scientific Linux 6.1 (because our school uses RHEL 6.1)
so, while running the installer I made (added) a logical volume lv_Scientific with ext4 FS and made its mount point (/) and used the MBR /boot which overwrote the Fedora /boot (completely OK and was as expected) i restarted after installation i got SL log in and as per the directions of the thread i copied the boot stanza from grub.conf of fedora 15 (which i already had copied and pasted into a text file and copied it from there)and pasted it into grub.conf of SL you may ask why did i choose same physical LVM too save swap space ... if i had made another physical LVM i had to make another swap ( i like LVM ... its cool)
completely unexpected happened Fedora now boots but not SL when grub starts i get this error 27 unrecognised commad and when i press <enter> i get grub menu with SL and fedora when i press on Fedora it works well i get my fedora login and i did login .. everything works fine but when i press SL it goes to the previous black screen grub error 27

My Server runs "fine", then I type init 6 for rebooting or some cron job initiates Init 6 and my system stops in grub at: GRUB loading stage1.5. Error 18 After another Ctrl+Alt+Del the system boots as if anything happened. this is why I doubt that it's an issue of too big HDD or BIOS.

I tried to install Open Office following a guide in OpenOffice.org but after several attempts debian refused to boot properly. I decided to re-install Debian 5.0. When we came to the installation of the boot loader GRUB refused to be installed. I stopped the installation expecting to go back to the beginning. But now it tries to boot saying:Grub loading stage 1.5.
Grub loading, please wait...

I been running both OS's for a few months now with no major problems besides wireless internet issues. Today, however, as I go to boot my laptop up, the Dell logo loads with the F2 and F12 boot and setup options which both work. Directly after that though I get the message "GRUB loading. Symbol '?' not found. Aborted. Press any key to Exit." then it repeats when I push a key, and then it tells me to press F1 to retry, F2 to go to setup, or F5 to run diagnostics. It passes all the tests in diagnostics. I've tried booting off of the ubuntu cd I used to load it initially with no luck. So I'm stuck at either that error message or in setup but I can't go any further, and it does not change anything when I tried to boot from the cd.

I have an Ubuntu Jaunty server with 4 x 1 TB Hitachi SATA Hard drives and a 4GB IDE Flash Drive. I installed the root file system to the IDE Flash Drive and setup the 4 x 1 TB Hard Drives as a RAID 5 for the home partition (I actually allotted 3 Gigs on each drive as swap space as well). My problem occurs however when I restart my computer after the server installation. Grub doesn't load fully and I am left with a "GRUB_" message on the screen. My root partition is ext3 and I have also tried the same configuration with a boot partition as well on the IDE drive to no avail.

I have a Dual boot and Grub let me boot into windows. for linux grub gave error 17 (if i remember correctly).o i popped in the LiveCD and tryed gparted to check for errors (nothing changed). I tried rewriting grub from the live cd and that made matters worse.

Ubuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message
error file not found grub rescue I can't say if 11.04 was properly installed or not. Ask whatever you like and I'll give the best answer I can. I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.

Once upon a time i hid the boot loader by setting the default boot to windows 7 and the waiting time to 0. However, i can't seem to access it anymore... When i hold shift on boot, nothing happens. When i hold esc, my computer starts beeping like mad if i hold it too soon, but if i hold it later, it just goes to the windows boot thing and reboots. So.. is there anything i can do other than downloading the whole OS again and making a live CD? (don't have the old one anymore)

I'm trying to install Fedora for the first time on my Desktop. Unfortunately, upon restart once the installation is complete I get the following error:
Code:
This is from Fedora 12 x86_64 DVD. I presume that this obviously has to do with my disk selection during partitioning, during which I deselcted the two drives that I didn't want to be part of the install and left the one that I did selected. I also selected "use entire disk". The drive had copies of both Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it, which I expect were wiped out during install.
I know that the details are sparse...but that's all I did. I'm happy to go back into the installer to retreive any necessary information that may be needed/to reinstall.

My brother has Tri boot Ubuntu ,7 and Vista ..GRUB2 is the bootloader..The problem : At boot after the Lenovo splash disappears , there appears some 4 to 5 lines of error , error:syntax error GRUB or similar..This is visible only for a fraction of a second before the GRUB2 menu pops up...
The OS es load properly on selection in the menu so no loss of functionality One another problem is there is no OS highlighted by default and the timeout message "Automatic Boot in 10 Secs" does not appear Reinstalling GRUB does not solve the issue

I've been using Ubuntu for a couple years, and have really enjoyed the experience. Recently though, I also felt like installing Arch Linux onto my laptop which already had a Vista/Ubuntu 10.04 partition. In doing so, I lost access to the Ubuntu partition on my hard drive. The Arch linux grub had replaced the Ubuntu grub.
So the main question is, does anyone know how I could re-access or re-install the original Ubuntu grub? If not, then can someone help me with adding a boot option in Arch's Grub? I've already tried some things, though obviously, none have worked so far.

i have 2 hard drives connected to sata ports randomly on my motherboard ( i didnt do it in any order )
1. Western digital 500GB - Windows 7
2. Seagate 500GB - Linux HDD - had ubuntu 10.04 on it before suse
Ok basically, ive been trying distro's by installing them on my linux HD, my favourite is ubuntu, but i wanted to see what else is out there so i tried out OpenSUSE, and with suse i unfortantly came across many problems with grub-legacy, and i solved that eventually by changing my boot hard disk in BIOS to the seagate, and installing grub on that Ive never had a grub issue in the past using ubuntu, only with suse Then i decided to go back to ubuntu because everything just works and i like .deb packages, so i installed 10.10 32Bit
Everything went fine, chose default install options, formatted the Seagate drive, and installed to the seagate, HD changedt the boot drive to the western digital in BIOS ( were ubuntu likes to install grub in the past ) booted fine, installed fine, grub showed fine, booted to linux then i went back to windows for a day of gaming and fun, i just rebooted about 30 minutes ago to play with linux, and i cant access the grub menu my pc goes to the POST screen and then were grub should show, i get a blank screen and the pc just reboots to the POST constantly this problem has never happened with ubuntu, ive had 10.10 before, this is all started after removing opensuse
ive tried F8 and booting from both drives, the seagate i just get a white underline for ages and nothing happens and i cant boot to windows on the WD Im currently on my livecd im using the 11.04 livecd, all my cds arent labelled, so i have no idea which is which, i just chucked one in to get a browser, but i gotta say natty 11.04 IS AWSOME
