I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 and I recently installed Fedora 14. The computer has a built in Ethernet card, and I'm not sure about what exactly the card is, but I do know that I have a Wireless USB Netopia IEEE 802.11b (model # SWL-2300U) that worked fine on my XP, but now that I've changed over to Linux I can't seem to find this driver for Linux anywhere!
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've installed opensuse 11.2 on an old IBM thinkpad. The install went without a hitch and when I got to the desktop I inserted my Dlink DWL-G132 wireless USB adapter. Opensuse immediately recognised that a wireless device was attached and I could see my wireless network listed. I entered my WPA password and was able to connect to my routers configuration page by entering 192.168.0.1 in the URL bar of firefox. For some reason I am unable to navigate to any webpage. When I enter a URL firefox acts as though there is no internet connection. The only way I can get the internet on my laptop is to connect it to my router with a cable. I used a wired connection and ran the update utility thinking that perhaps an update would fix the issue but it did not. I know the adapter works because the laptop used to have windows xp installed and I could connect fine with that.
Does anyone here have any idea why I would be able to connect wirelessly to the routers configuration page but not to the internet? I appreciate any advice anyone may have.
I'm using a WUSB54GC network adapter to connect to my home wireless network. My network was not visible, so I added it and it shows connected, but when I launch the browser, I can't get a connection. I'm using Ubuntu 10.4. All other computers on the network connect fine and I disabled my firewall to see if that made a difference.

I would like to have all traffic from the ethernet connection out through the wireless (basically using the box as a router) however I am having some trouble doing this.
I have done this before on Windows however I am having some trouble doing this on linux, I have tried using Squid Proxy however I am having some trouble using configuring/using it.
I am using Yellow Dog Linux however I am willing to change to any other distro as long as it is compatable with PS3 (as this is what im using linux on)
After several hours of frustration to point of almost scrapping linux alltogether I was finally able to get my wireless networking to work in Linux Mint 6. I searched for hours and came up with several different suggestions that were supposed to fix my problem - NONE OF THEM WORKED! As a new linux user, I can completely understand why so many people try linux and then give up on it. It should not be so hard to get a wireless internet connection working.
Said another way - the people making distros should read these forums and see what difficulties are experienced and work on fixing them. In any event - I want to post my solution to the problem for my COMPAQ CQ60-211DX so that anyone else who wants to try linux on this model laptop will save a great amount of time. Here are the steps I took to get linux mint 6 to work on my laptop:
1. Open terminal window
2. Type - lspci | grep Atheros
3. Hit the enter key
If you see: Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
then these instructions WILL get your AR242x (AR5007) wireless card to work for you. Be warned - I tried everything I read including ndiswrapper, etc. - none of it worked! You will need to click the menu button go to all applications and then administration. From there, select hardware drivers and look for anything that has Atheros in it. CLICK DEACTIVATE! Now you will have to restart your computer. When it starts back up....
I have a DSL connection attached to a wireless router at home which at the moment working fine on my windows laptop. However I have problems connecting to the internet via my desktop which has fedora on it and TP-Link PCI Wireless card. The connection with the wireless network keeps restarting, disconnecting and reconnecting and when it is connected either no internet or very slow sluggish internet barely loading the webpage title.
I installed Ubuntu and the same problem is happening.Yesterday However everything was working fine even on the desktop.

I have an HP laptop with a wireless connection to my BT router. This works fine,but when I switch to ubuntu I cannot get on line it simply does not recognize the the connection.A friend suggested disabling the internal card and using a usb dongle this works fine on windows but again is not recognized by ubuntu.I do have an Ethernet cable connection which is fine in the office but no good when elsewhere in the house. View 14 Replies View RelatedI would like some help setting up using a wireless connection. I can connect using wired connection, and I have no trouble browsing. I have a strong wireless connection as well; however, when I try to browse I get a server not found error. I did download the necessary drivers. Before that, I didn't have a wireless connection. I was able to connect on this pc before the install, and all other devices still connect using wireless. I have a linksys router.
The one thing that stands out at me is the ip address that it says the wireless connection is using. It says it is 10.42.43.1
I feel like that might be problematic because I'm pretty sure my router only accepts connections with values that are between 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.200.

NetworkManager gets to the second green dot, and then after a short while I am given a message that the connection was disconnected.
Configuring the interface manually, not using DHCP, allows the connection to complete. However, the internet is very slow. There is a 15-30 sec delay before website loading actually commences, and then another delay each time an ad must be fetched from another server.How can I fix this delay? I know I have encountered it in earlier versions of Ubuntu, but I can't remember how I fixed it.About the rdesktop problem, if anyone is able to help [maybe I should post another thread?], the cursor color (the color of the pointer) is inverted---where it should be white it is black, and where it should be black it is white. I did an extensive search in Internet and finally I got everything done. The card was visible and activated. I found my home network; the strength of the signal was nearly 100%.The problem is that although the card is visible and activated my browser is not working well. I can say that it is not working at all. Even now I am using other computer to write this message because Firefox cannot load any web page at all.
The strange part of the problem comes with the fact that when I open terminal window and when I am using yum everything looks OK. The speed is very low though.Does anybody have some ideas about the problem and its solution?When I use Windows on the very same computer everything is fine, the Internet speed is close to the maximum limits of my provider's speed which is 10 mbps.
I have a dual boot (XP Pro and F13) laptop. This laptop has a Ralink RT2501USB Wireless Adapter which works perfectly fine on XP. But when it comes to F13, adapter only works properly when I am physically next to my router. When I move few feet away the strength of the connection drops from 100% to around 40%. But even though 40% should be okay for slow connection to internet, I can't get any internet access at all. I have tried three different routers with same results on each.
When I boot same machine with windows XP, all works fine. I can move to any part of my house and I will still have the connection without any issues.I can see that RT73 driver is installed if I check in add remove program under system.I am not an expert but to me its seems that the drivers on F13 for RT2501USB are not as good as on windows?

I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.
