General :: Starting A Service At Startup?

May 11, 2010

I want to start a service and a script SiteMonitor.sh at startup.

Here is brief working of SiteMonitor.sh(This script monitors the ip addresses of machines which are using http service of the host. This script checks this after every 5 seconds therefore i have run it at background.)

To start with i have modified /etc/rc.local file.

Here is the content of my /etc/rc.local file.

Code:
#!/bin/sh
#
# This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts.
# You can put your own initialization stuff in here if you don't
# want to do the full Sys V style init stuff.

General :: Config Service Startup Options In Ubuntu?

Jan 23, 2011

I'm not used to using Ubuntu or Debian as a server. I'm more accustomed to Red Hat/Fedora ways and even Gentoo (yikes).

Under Red Hat installs, you can often configure most services that start from init using config files in /etc/sysconfig named by the service. Is there and equivalent thing under Ubuntu?

Specically I'm trying to control how the libvirtd and kvm processes are started as far as command line options go. I need to add the --listen option somewhere.

I'm having a problem getting my MPD service to start during boot. This started a week or so ago. It's no big deal, just a pain. It start fine when I run the script in a terminal. May 29, 2011

Just upgraded to F15 and I cannot seem to get the sendmail service starting at boot time.It starts and works just fine by hand after boot, so there's nothing wrong with the sendmail
configuration itself."runlevel" shows a current run level of 5 and "chkconfig" shows sendmail on for run level 5.All the other mail service (mailman, clamd, etc.) start fine.Doing "service sendmail start" after boot gets everything up and running just fine, but itsure would be nice to have it run at boot like it used to

OpenSUSE :: Nfs-client Service Very Slow To Start Or Not Starting?

Oct 6, 2010

The nfs-client service isn't starting after boot up. This is causing problems with the user as they cannot access the remote folders on the server. The PC is a Thinkpad X60s with oS11.3 and KDE4.4.4. The problem started about a week ago after some updates (new kernel update, kde4 updates and some system files) were applied on the laptop.

After logging in none of the remote folders are available. Checking the nfs-client service under Yast>System Services (Runlevel) shows the nfs-client service is not running. If I enable and start the service I get the pop-up confirming the service has started but still cannot access the remote folders even after issuing a mount -a. Opening Dolphin just opens a blank grey window which needs to be terminated.

Trying to restart the nfs service using su -c 'rcnfs restart' sticks at Starting NFS client services: sm-notify Just leaving the PC for 10-15mins eventually sorts itself out and the remote folders become visible. I cannot see anything obvious in the logs so am a bit stumped.

Software :: Starting A Job At Startup Without Logging In?

Nov 30, 2010

I'm trying to think of the best way to have a job start up on it's own when a system (running CentOS 5) boots up. The job is a simple python script. However, there are some interesting conditions that need to be met:

- As stated, script needs to start and run in the background when the system boots up, but without anyone logging in.

- This script needs to be readable only by root, which means it will need to be run as root

- Only 1 person will have root access, meaning nobody else will have access to see this script or it's status.

The entire point is to have this thing running all the time, even if the system reboots, but to make it so nobody can see the script or view it's source, unless they have root access, which only 1 person will have.

I can think of plenty of ways to have things start up automatically when a system comes up, but they all involve having the user log in as part of it. How can I have a listening python script start up, at boot up, on it's own, without root actually logging in?

Ubuntu :: How To Make Bluetooth Service Disabled At Startup

I have recently installed Lubuntu 11.04 on an old system. the problem is that it hangs at startup when tries to "Starting Bluetooth". I have searched through this forum and the web and it seems that the problem has something to do with my TV Card. I can start the machine with Lubuntu Live CD, and so I thought that maybe I can change a value in a file from installed Lubuntu through Live session that makes the Bluetooth Service disabled at startup.

Server :: Configure Fakemail To Startup As Xinetd Service?

Feb 2, 2010

I found a way to capture emails sent from my Drupal installation, and Fakemail seems simple enough. I can follow the tutorial. Since the application Fakemail needs to be running to capture the outgoing emails, it seems like a good candidate for xinetd, yes? I've found a simple config tutorial describing starting the service and what the parameters are for the service-specific configuration files. This got me this far,

Code:

# default: on
# description: This is a script to start the Sandbox app "fakemail"
service fakemail

[code]....

But the service is not starting up. Will someone help me with this config file? Or, recommend another application which uses a similar configuration like Sendmail so I can copy this The Fakemail application/service is started from command line like so,

# fakemail.py --host=localhost --port=10025 --path=[path_to_email_textfile]

Ubuntu :: Preventing Upstart Jobs From Starting On Startup

I'd like to reconfigure vsftpd so that it does not start on boot (and I can enable/disable it using service vsftpd start/stop).

Though I've seen posts in the forums that stated that upstart jobs can be disabled by moving the /etc/init/job.conf file, other sites commented that the original file will be recreated on updates.

The other two suggestions were to alter the upstart script such that either the process starts on never:

Code:
start on (never
and filesystem
and net-device-up IFACE!=lo)
stop on runlevel [!2345]
