Personnally up until now I've been using either NTFS or a ext3 fs driver from Windows. I wonder if there's a better way. Probably NAS is the best, but not really practical with a laptop.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 working on my laptop. I have 20GB space unpartitioned. I want to install a flavor of Linux like Fedora or Ubuntu in that space, but I have heard that keeping a dual OS configuration sometimes results in losing data stored on the hard disk. I've also heard that it may sometimes cause unrecoverable problem because when Linux is loaded on hard disk it will take over the boot loader from Windows.
Is this correct? Moreover, I have 6 partitions in Windows, but if I use a Live CD for Ubuntu or Fedora to boot, then it is not showing some partitions -- sometimes it shows only 4 or 5 partitions. What might be the problem, and how to resolve it without formatting the whole hard disk and repartitioning it?
Just go myself a new computer and thinking of how set it up. I have win7 HP and will probably install at least some version of Ubuntu on it shortly to have dual boot. Might come other Linux distros too in the future. I have a 1TB HDD and my question is what's the smartest way to share files on all OS's? In what format?
I was thinking of ~100GB for Windows for apps and games etc. ~20-50GB for Ubuntu and some third partition, where I store my common files like media, pics, docs, downloads and stuff, taking the rest of the free space.
What filesystem should the shared partition be? Is there some smart way to get windows home directories and linux home directories to point to the same place on the shared partition or would it be recommended to just keep them separated?
I am preparing to do a fresh install of lucid lynx dual boot with vist@ Currently I am running 9.04 in this configuration. The install guide for Lucid says the new grub2 doesn't support more than 2 operating systems. plus I apparently can't edit it either. Besides vist@ there is a hp recovery partition which has a seperate entry in my existing grub. Does this mean I can't use the lucid desktop disk for a fresh install because I would have 3 operating systems? Lynx, vist@ and HP recovery partition.
I only have two applications left I am using on vist@, but I have no recovery disk, only an old image for my vist@. I am very concerned about this upgrade. 5.04 went smooth and each one since then has been a bit harder. I could not get 9.10 to run and had to go back to 9.04. I hope I am not at the end of the road. How about using grub instead of grub2?
I'm trying to dual boot Ubuntu and Win7, and I just did a clean install of Win7. However, when I start the Ubuntu installation it merely just says no operating systems detected and my only option is to erase the whole disk. I can see the NTFS partition in disk utility but can't see anything in GParted.
I've tried to look through the forums but can't seem to find a solution to this exact problem - does anyone point me in the right direction or to the solution?
I currently have Windows 7 installed. I wish to dual boot this with Ubuntu 10.4. On a 120gb drive I allocated a large percentage to Windows and have put two partitions on the end; 1gb for swap, 15gb for Ubuntu. However, when I go to install and get to the partition manager bit it claims no operating systems have been found. Contrary to this, when I boot into the live CD it sees all the partitions, however these cannot be accessed and no error messages are displayed (However, accessing the Windows partition appeared to corrupt the install and I had to format...). When running install from the live environment the same no operating systems found error occurs. Windows 7 works fine and the drive is IDE (if this makes any difference).
View 2 Replies View RelatedA while back I installed Dreamlinux 3.5 Gnome edition using ext2. When I attempted to use the email address books I imported from the Dreamlinux3.5 XFCE edition, which had been ext3, I discovered that none of the email addresses could be mailed to. I had to manually type in the addresses.
When I reinstalled Dreamlinux 3.5 Gnome using ext3, the same backup files that did not work in ext2 now work just fine. The question is, was this a "broken data" problem caused by the switch to ext2 file system or something else? Has anyone else experienced this?
The mail program is Thunderbird.
I am about to work on getting the workstations on my network here to be connected to the Active Directory on my Windows 2003 server using Likewise Identity Service. of the security requirements is a good time sync, so I am trying to setup my Windows server time server on my CentOS machines. These machines dual boot Windows 7 and CentOS 5.5. I am using the Windows server as a time server and it's getting its time from its CMOS.llowing a microsoft kb article. I removed all the time servers from the CentOS box I am experimenting with and added the IP of my Windows server, it seems to connect ok but theime never gets updated.Oh, and this network has no connection to the internet it's cut off from the world, so sad and lonely and cannot get internet time
View 3 Replies View RelatedI can connect & share my dual-boot PC with no problems under WinXPPro using wired or wireless. (I've another thread going trying to get the wireless-n usb adapter to work.) Two questions so I can get the wired shares to work. I want to copy beaucoup files from the Win7 PC to the dual-boot PC. When booting into XP, no problems. When booting into Ubuntu 10.04, nothing. I can see the Win7 PC but can't access it. My two questions then are these.First, is there some switch to enable fire & drive sharing under Lynx as there is under WinXP / 7? Second, how does one set the IPv4 address? Under WinXP it's one address and under Lynx it's another.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot laptop Ubuntu 10.10 + Windows XP. When browsing my Windows C Drive in Ubuntu I decided to create a share to the windows "my documents" folder. The problem is that the windows drive is not automatically mounted at launch of ubuntu and as a result I get the following errors:

and a search box is launched (See Attached Image).
I have tried to look at the Samba and Nautilus settings but I am unable to find any that automatically mount the windows drive.
Problem: I have installed two Ubuntu servers, 10.04 32-bit and 10.10 64-bit, in a multi-boot environment (also have FDOS and WinXPsp3). The 64-bit will not boot because grub can't find the UUID for the disk with the 64-bit system.
Brief Background: Installed 10.04 LTS two months ago with no problems. 10.04 is in a primary partition on hda with FDOS.
Installed 10.10 (64-bit) in a new primary partition on the same hd. The install seemed to go ok, but the MBR and the fs on the 10.04 were corrupted; could not boot. Restored drive, and rebuilt grub.
Installed 10.10 on separate hd (hdb). In grub step all OS's were recognized so I pointed the grub to hda. Grub failed to boot.
Rebuilt grub from 10.04 on hda. All systems recognized but 10.10 will not boot because it says it cannot locate the UUID specified.
Compared the grub.cfg for both systems, the UUID specified for hdb is the same. Also, when I mount the drive for 10.10 on the 10.04 system the drive UUID is consistent.
I know I must be missing some thing, but I know not what. Have searched and can't find any clues. All other OS's boot ok.
Hardware: AMD64 4GB, 2 internal IDE drives (hda and hdb), 1 internal SATA (hdc WinXP), various USB and Firewire Drives (no bootable systems).

I had previously installed ubuntu 10.04 and then had an extra partition that had data in it.Went ahead to boot with the backtrack 4 disk BUT it did not give me an option for installing them side-by side so i did it manually by editing the partition with the partitioner! I had 2 swamp spaces one i which was initially there for Ubuntu and the other i created! Then simply formated ine partition with EXT3 and mountpoint of / which made two of them!after installation, the grub shows that there is another OS but when it does not load!

I am installing a custom 8.04 live disk (basically, a mirror of my whole system with user data intact, sans all non-OS files) from a USB key with remastersys for the .iso creation, and UNetbootin for the bootable USB on a brand new 120GB PATA WD HDD. Both do nicely so far, so I have a working livedisk to use until I need to install Ubuntu to the drive.
I had a pure linux box, but I need to add XP with dual booting now- I have to use Autodesk Inventor 2010 software for my college class on my laptop, so I don't drive 30 miles to use the 1 computer lab equipped with that software. I'm not new to Linux, but I am new to more in-depth partitioning. I've taken the lead and looked into things- read this good guide, among others:

Problem is, until now, I've put everything on a single partition because I didn't know better. Now I do, but am a bit confused with all the guides as to what's most efficient, especially in my case where full RAM speed is crucial to running a single program.
Here's what I know I need to do: 1. The Windows XP install I know needs from 20-30GB for Inventor 2010 LT to work well. I don't need anything else in XP spacewise- it's just being added for Inventor. 2. I'd like to create a separate /home partition for Ubuntu this time to save my user data, making future upgrades much more painless (I will be getting Lucid soon). How that works when upgrading, though, I don't know yet..
3. I'd like both OSes to share all my personal files (docs, pics, music, Inventor design files) if it is an efficient choice that works without problems.
4. Finally, because 2GB is minimum for Inventor to run decently, I need to maximize the speed of my RAM for it- from my reading, these so-called "swap" partitions can somehow be added for buffering this- people seem to sugguest the swap be half the size of the RAM for fastest speed, and some say add separate /usr or other partitions. I'm not clear on what would be most efficient for me.
I have limited HDD space- because of my laptop's BIOS, this single 120GB drive is the biggest I can get on my laptop, so efficient partitioning would make a huge difference for me. Before this, a 60GB HDD was in this. I'd like to see some added space for my data storage, but still keep things as fast as possible for Inventor when I use it, and Ubuntu.
I'd like the final layout to have a Windows partition (will start out as XP and will become Win7 when I can afford yet another copy), a partition for Ubuntu, and a shared Data partition that I can use for all my files between both OSs. I think this should be fairly straight forward with Linux on a Primary partition with / and swap. Only thing is, from what I've read (and yes I know this is a bit old school) it might be a good idea to put in a /Home partition so that I can reinstall new upgrades and maintain settings. But I don't want to max out my 4 primary partitions so I can use a 4th partition as a kind of sandbox for OS testing without using VirtualBox all the time.
This leaves me in need of some advice, I've never used Fdisk and I was planning on just using the Ubuntu installer to do all of this, but I don't know if I can create /Home as a logical partition in the main Ubuntu partition and still have the benefit of being able to reformat /root without losing /Home. I might have just confused myself, because no matter how many guides and How Tos I read I still don't really get extended partitions, I understand logical vs. primary but extended is...confusing. I need the Ubuntu partition to be bootable, so it needs to be a primary partition...I think. Unless I can have: /boot, /, swap, and /Home...
Also, if Ubuntu can read NTFS, and Win7 can read Ext3, what should a do with /Data? Or should I just go with FAT32 and be done with it. (It's a big HDD btw, 640 GB, so /Data will be fairly large)
When i work in Ubuntu on a dual boot system with a shared NTFS data-partition where Windows is hibernated, and then reboot and continue working in Windows from the hibernated sesion, strange things happen. Files disappear, files that i worked on suddenly have the content of another file.

I have a network of 20 machines, all running Ubuntu 10.04.
Each machine has about 200[GB] of data that I'd like to share with all other 19 machines for READ ONLY PURPOSES. The reading should be done at the FASTEST POSSIBLE WAY.
A friend told me to look into setting up HTTP / FTP. Is it indeed the optimal way to share data between the machines (better than NFS)? if so, how do I go about it?
UPDATE: Just to clarify, all I want is to be able (from within machine X) to access one of machine Ys files and LOAD IT INTO MEMORY. all of the files are of uniform size (500 [KB]). Which method is fastest (SAMBA / NFS / HTTP / FTP)?
