General :: Setup Ubuntu To See Windows Network?
Apr 13, 2010
I've tried the various tutorials and no success so far.
I can connect to the router and from there to the internet, but I cannot see any network shares. I'm connecting through wlan0. I would prefer to keep the dynamic IP address if possible.
In answer to heavyd, smbtree gives me:
WORKGROUP
\COMPUTER1
cli_start_connection: failed to connect to COMPUTER1<20> (0.0.0.0). Error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL
\MY-LAPTOP my-laptop server (Samba, Ubuntu)
[Code]....
The data above has been anonymized for my protection.
Also I can ping them, I just can't see them via smb://.

running a Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop in the living room with a LOT of files. I've tried all week to get this working, and can't tell where the problem is. I want to make a music share that will: Allow guests, but as read-only Allow me to mount in Windows 7 with the user 'thecheeks' Give user thecheeks read/write access to that share
I swear Samba ends up working but maybe the problem is with Windows 7. I looked at the SAMBAWiki Win 7 page and made sure my registry values were what they should have been (and they were).

I have 3 windows computers and just bought linux server. All of them are currently connected to switch. There is also Wireless AP connected to switch and ADSL router connected to switch (yeah, I know its possible to buy a 3in1 but this was bought piecemeal). ADSL is doing the DHCP and I'm not using any other advanced services.
Now, I want to route everything over the linux server. I got the 3 LAN cards for him (one for wireless, one for LAN and one for ADSL) but when I connect everything this way its not working (surprise surprise). I'm following Linux Advanced Routing & Traffic Control HOWTO but its surprisingly sparse on the topic of network setup and i dont know how to proceed now. Since the server will be a choke point I presume I need to setup DHCP server on him? First question is: can I use same netmask on all of these subnets? Ubuntu DHCP server guide uses both static and DHCP and am not sure if I should also use static on some routes or is it ok to use DHCP on all.
Also, when I was installing ubuntu server only one LAN card was used (eth2) so ifconfig shows only lo and eth2, but when I do ifconfig eth0 up and ifconfig eth1 up it doesnt look like its working. Anyway, hope somebody has some tips to point me in the right direction, primarily DHCP server setup and if I missed any steps...

I just installed Opensuse 11.2 today and I'm eager to start downloading and customizing, but I can't set up a network. I originally installed it with the GNOME desktop, and when I opened firefox i could only connect to [URL]... and [URL], other websites timed out, even if i got to them via search results or URL.
Now, I reinstalled using the KDE desktop because after a little thought I preferred it, but now I can't even connect to these search engines at all. I don't know how to configure the network! It's through the onboard ethernet port, ethernet cable direct to modem.

I've been trying to get rcp command to work for my development environment but to no avail. I'm working on a Red Hat Linux server, and the rcp is meant to be used between Linux-Linux and Linux-Windows system. I've done some reading up and this is what I found:-
Quote:
Step 01: Turn on RCP service on UNIX Host
Turn on the RCP service on unix machine by using inetd:
1. Log on as root.
2. Edit the file /etc/Inetd.conf.
3. Uncomment the lines that start with shell and that start with exec.
4. Save the file.
5. Use ps -ef |grep inetd and determine inetd service pid. Send the Host User Profile (HUP) signal to inetd by using kill or by using pkill.
6. Run inetd again.
To turn on the RCP service by using xinetd:
1. Log on as root.
2. Edit the file /etc/Xinetd.d/rsh. You may get another file based on your linux distrinution.
3. Change the line disable to no.
4. Save the file.
5. Use ps -ef |grep inetd and determine inetd service pid. Send the HUP signal to xinetd by using kill or by using pkill.
6. Run xinetd again.
Step 02: Set the security permissions
After turning on RCP services you must set the security permissions to allow the Windows host to connect to your computer.
1. Edit the file /etc/hosts.equiv. Based on your linux distribution this file may vary. You can get like /etc/hosts.allow.
2. In the file add a line that contains the name of your Windows host.
3. Add a second line that contains the name of your Windows host and the name of a user who can access the directory that you want to transfer. Separate the two elements with a tab character.
4. Save the file.
I noted that my Red Hat have xinetd BUT I don't have the rsh file in step (2). It says I may get another file but which file should I be looking for? As for Step 02, I did find hosts.allow and updated that and the hosts file itself. Besides that, I also use useradd to add a user to match up with the one in the other system since I've read that the rcp required both end to use the same user name.

Im trying to setup multiple domU through the default bridge setup. I am able to access only one of them through the network at a time. If you ping one of the domU it works perfectly but you cannot ping any of the others until you stop pinging the one and even then it takes a bit before you can. Ive looked around for a while and seen similar problems but nothing ever seems quite the same. Im probably missing something really stupid. Or is this the way the bridge is supposed to behave? Do i need to use a routed virtual network?

Can someone give me some advice or point me to an article that could show me how to do this? Also, would this affect the security of my home machine (sometimes I do banking there)? I have a SBS '08 server, and it handles all FSMO roles, and every service known to man. I'm trying to shift those to other computers, but we haven't got the capital for another server. I know Linux is a capable OS and has the ability to run DNS, but I'm not too familiar with linux. How could I set up DNS on linux so that it is a redundant DNS server?

I do not have the hardware to do this yet. I simply want advice on what route to take before I make the investment. If I had the money I would simply invest in a wireless combo setup, but I unfortunately do not. I do however have an idea. I am currently stuck with a standalone system that is running XP strictly for the use of magicjack. I was thinking I could hook up this combo machine to that computer and network it in via that. However, would the scanning capability only reside in the hardwired computer or could I do a network scan somehow?

i have done most of the setup for MRTG network monitor tool.
But i m stuck at configuration part.
the actual MRTG guide says following.
I m little confused about what should i put inplace of community@router.abc.xyz.
Quote:
The next step is to configure mrtg for monitoring a network device. This is done by creating an mrtg.cfg file which defines what you want to monitor. Luckily, you don't have to dive straight in and start writing your own configuration file all by yourself. Together with mrtg you also got a copy of cfgmaker. This is a script you can point at a router of your choice; it will create a mrtg configuration file for you. You can find the script in the bin subdirectory.
cfgmaker --global 'WorkDir: /home/httpd/mrtg'
--global 'Options[_]: bits,growright'
--output /home/mrtg/cfg/mrtg.cfg
community@router.abc.xyz
This example above will create an mrtg config file in /home/mrtg/cfg assuming this is a directory visible on your webserver. You can read all about cfgmaker in cfgmaker. One area you might want to look at is the possibility of using --ifref=ip to prevent interface renumbering troubles from catching you.
If you want to start rolling your own mrtg configuration files, make sure you read mrtg-reference to learn all about the possible configuration options.

It it possible to setup a bind server for my internal network at home? Currently, all clients DNS requests go to my Verizon FIOS router, which also acts as a DHCP server. I would like to setup a another DNS server using BIND for studing.
Current setup:
Client --> Router (DNS Server) --> Internet
New BIND server setup:
Client --> BIND Server (2nd DNS) --> Router (Primary DNS) --> Internet
How would I go ab this? Would I have to configure a cache naming DNS server?

I am new to networking and trying to setup my own local area network using virtual box machines. I have installed BIND 9.7.3 using yum in Fedora (dns server) and created all necessary .conf and zone fil es. I am successfully able to resolve domain names on this host machine (dns server). for example dig @dns.domain.lan client1.domain.lan correctly resolves domain name.

Before Christmas, I wiped all partitions off my Acer Aspire One D150 netbook and installed Jolicloud Linux to try out. It's great, but I'm missing too much of my Windows-only software so I'd like to switch back. The problem I'm having is that the Windows XP Home setup CD is starting up the installer fine, but when it comes to selecting the harddrive to install on it's not finding anything.I've tried using GParted to wipe all partitions again and create a new FAT32 partition, but that's not being picked up by Windows XP setup either. (I've tried setting the 'boot' flag on this partition in GParted as well, but no change.)Is FAT32 not the correct paritition type for Windows XP Home? I'm thinking this isn't relevant at this point, because Windows XP setup doesn't seem to be mounting the HDD, nevermind analysing what partitions it has on it already.

I currently run a Windows 7 Compaq laptop with an Athlon x2 and 4gig of DDR2. I want to either set up a dual-boot on my laptop, or make Linux the Primary with Windows running in something like a virtual box. I am very much into Android and I want to learn Linux as a result of that. So which Distro should be considered in a situation like this.

Half of my hard drive is an unused partition, which is formatted ext2 which is just temporal and has no specific intention of mine. This unused partition has its own swap area, which is also a temporal and not important.
So my HD is:
Now, I'd like installing Windows 7 using these sda2 and sda4 partitions without corrupting current Linux installation and its GRUB2 setting(I'd likt to reconfigure the GRUB2 after successfully installing the Windows image, for the dual-boot).

What could be the reason for this error despite of the fact the I am able to ping the FQDN of the PDC from the XP machine, but the XP machine simply denies to join the domain because of the above mentioned error.

I have an opensuse 11.3 install which I want to set up as a network boot server to install Solaris 10 on a Sun Ultra 10 client. According to what I've read, this requires rarpd and tftpd which I've set up on opensuse, but also bootparamd which I can't find for 11.3. It seems it was last included with opensuse 9.2. Does anyone know if it's available, if I could use the suse 9.2 version, or any alternative?
