I am newbie in linux. What I want to do is: Make backup for my file system, cos I learn how to configure servers. So if I made some thing wrong, I want to be able to restore the default setting for my files. Instated of install new O/S.
My manager at work asked me to setup an FTP server running LINUX. i had a post about some custom scripts and commands that i needed, so after i configured and set everything up, i got another assignment....here we go, i need to come up with a way of backing up the entire system, or creating a script that will setup,install and configure the FTP related features i have made working there.i am wondering what would be the most ideal/best and easy to do way to back up the system? the goal is : in case if HDD fails,r anything goes wrong.system can be restored in no time. this is still up in air thing, i offered taking some time on a weekend and setting up same system on say,ew drive, and swapping them when one goes bad... but what would be an alternatives

Recently I've backupped my entire /home folder on my laptop with grsynch trough ssh.Since I already had a simply text file containing all installed programs, I figured 'then, when i go from the backup trough my desktop, all my program settings will be restored if i run the txt file to install all those programs first.So i installed al programs, then i went from backup to /home on desktop, logged out and back in. Started up a random program (tried thunderbird and filezilla) and no settings were to be found.In retrospect, docky did start, but didnt have all the launchers i had on my laptop. so that could have been a clue.

View 1 Replies View Relatedbest/simplest way to back up my triple-boot machine, which has Karmic 32-bit, Karmic 64-bit and Windows 7 (64-bit) installed on 3 equal slices of the internal 1TB disk. There are a total of 6 partitions (1 primary+1 logical partition each for the two Karmic, and 2 primary partitions for Win7), and I would like to back it up on an external disk such that the whole system can be restored as-is by writing over the disk. I guess this means correctly backing up data+partition table+MBR, and I would also prefer backing up only the used portion of the disk (rather than creating a 1TB mostly empty image file).
To my knowledge the only way to reliably do this is with "dd" command, but I have never used it ("fsarchiver" seems to be the next best option, but it cannot back up MBR yet; and "partimage" does not have ext4 support). As described here and here, I should run the following commands from a live boot:
1) To back up entire data in compressed format (using 1MB read block to speed up the process):
dd if=/dev/sda bs=1MB | gzip > /backup/image.gz
2) To back up MBR+partition table (stored within the first 512 bytes of the disk):
dd if=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 of=/backup/image.mbr
3) To restore data:
gzip -dc /backup/image.gz | dd of=/dev/sda
4) To restore MBR+partition table:
dd if=/backup/image.mbr of=/dev/sda
I would like to find out how to back up a complete Ubuntu system, and then restore it on a clean harddisk.I have been running dual booting with Win XP until now. I am running Ubuntu 10.04, but have installed quite few add-on. I would like to make an Ubuntu-only machine now, with all the same apps still there, but dont want to go and download everything again. I am looking for a way I can back this entire Ubuntu installation up, and then restore it to a clean drive.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using ubuntu for a few weeks now and i created a backup script that can copy some folders into a .tgz file. Now i want to place back the folders to where they come from and overwrite the original folder. like the /home folder in the .tgz file overwrite the /home folder on my harddrive. I already tried to do this with: tar xvpfz filename.tgz. But after that the folders came in the same folders as the backupfile stands.
How can i do this the right way?

There were some files residing on my ext3 file system, using Ubuntu as my linux distribution. Yesterday I formatted the hard drive using a windows install CD, rewriting it with a new NTFS partition. I'm willing to restore my personal files deleted due to this format.

Before quitting my job I have made a simple copy of the root.disk file, thinking I could restore it easily later.
Now I would restore this system on a Virtual Machine (with Virtual Box)
Have you got an idea how i could do this??
(I already tryied to install another wubi on a virtualized Windows 7, the install complete but I can't see ubuntu in the boot loader...)
I re-installed ubuntu 10.04 for prep I did a backup with Simple Backup Config after reinstalling i restored with Simple Backup restore some installed software software now doesn't start and after troubleshooting i think problem is file permissions but i'm not sure which permissions of which files to change and what they should be changed to. has anyone had experience with this and if so is it because it works or because its the right way to do it and it works funny thing.. i can't find any forum posts with info on Simple Backup!

View 4 Replies View RelatedHave been using mint 11 for past few weeks with no problem but failed to boot correctly. menu appeared giving options for booting but kept returning to this menu without going further so I opted to go for safe booting option, after loading a few files it asked for password but kept giving me the message incorrect password so I could get no further. Fortunately I had a cop of clonezilla and was able to restore a backup from a second hard drive but would be grateful for any observations anyone would like to make about this (in case it happens again)

(Windows 7 on NTFS) The image is on the second partition of my hard drive (Western Digital 250 gig). I need to restore now, but Ping is unable to mount the volume. In fact, it will not mount any volume or perform any new backup. I made sure nothing has changed in Bios options since I created the backup. Does this imply that is not the appropriate tool to work on NTFS system?
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I've finally given up on saving my kubuntu install that wont boot. I've searched, and looked, but couldn't find a thing.My delema now is to make sure that I:
a) get all of the user data safely packed up onto my external USB drive. I believe it's all in the home directory. I'm not sure about getting hidden files though...
b) get the new install to go smoothly, and not mess up grub or the parralell XP install on the same hard drive.
c) get the user data back on the computer and recreate the user structure. Permissions were messed up already, so setting those up again is not an issue.
So, I've been poking around, and this is how I think things should go:
a) tar cvpjf backup.tar.bz2 /home to get my home directory backed up. Not exactly sure how to get from here to my external hd, but I'm sure I can figure it out
b) just run a live cd of kubuntu, delete the old partitions, and reinstall over them?
c) unzip the tar into by /home directory.
That's all I've been able to find so far. How do I set up the users? Will they show up as soon as I untar? Will the resinstall play nice with my windows install? Will I get all the hidden files too? Is there anything I'm missing?

basically want i want to do is copy my whole file system to a different hard drive, then reconfigure my partitions and copy it back. then reconfigure grub.
the reason i want to do this is when on dual boot i gave it only 70gb of space and now i want to add 300 more. and since the 300gb of space is a primary partition and this is a secondary i cant extend them or combine them.

I'm setting up a Backup & Media server, which will be running debian. I will setup a small HD or SSD/CF card for the OS, and a MD raid for the data drives.The total size of the raid will be either 3 or 4TB, depending. Now, I need to figure out what filesystem to use on top of this raid.My criteria is as follows:
1. Support for large files. I can't imagine anything larger than about 1.2TB, but the 4GB of, say, fat32 just isn't enough.
2. Robust. I don't want it falling apart on me; nothing too unstable.
3. (and this is most important): Good Undelete support. I got burned recently when a software glitch managed to rm -rf my EXT4 drive. All the file data is still there, but all the metadata is gone. I *DO NOT* want that happening with this. I want to be able to do a "RM / -RF", immediately unmount it, and then recover *all* of the deleted data. Obviously, when data is overwritten it's overwritten, but I don't want to lose all my metadata if a "RM -RF" happens. FAT-32 is the model I'm looking at: You can usually recover deleted files if anything happens to the drive.
So, what are my options?EXT2 looks like a possibility. EX4 is *clear out*, unless there's some nice utility/mode that keeps a backup of all deleted metadata etc.
I would like to create a full systembackup to a ISO/IMG-file. I've been searching and found mondorescue.org, but something is wrong with package for debian 6.
View 14 Replies View RelatedSystem76 laptop, 10.04, 320GB HDD, VMware with Win7 in one VM; want to use Clonezilla as am using it to back up (bare metal backup image) another older smaller dual-boot Ubuntu/XP machine. This System76 laptop is a work machine that I control; the Win7 VM only does a couple of things but they're necessary for work and I don't want to lose the configuration. The reason for the bare metal backup is so if I have to, I can restore and get back to work - something I've had to do on some previous occasions back when I used Windows. Data is no problem - I back that up separately on an hourly basis.
My question is what FS to use on the backup drive; for instance, for the dual-boot XP/Linux work machine I'm currently backing up, I'm using a 30GB external HDD formatted in FAT32. That's OK because 30GB is below the limit for FAT32. But for the newer laptop I'll need a much bigger backup partition. I chose FAT32 for the old one because I know everything on the computer being backed up, Windows & Linux both, is compatible with it. But what FS should I use to back up the new laptop, considering that I'll be backing up the Win7 VM as well as the main Linux part of the machine? I plan to use a backup partition of about 160GB. Could I format it NTFS and have it work with Ubuntu 10.04? Or, conversely, if I format it EXT, will it back up the Win7 VM OK?
are there any sweeper / cleaner apps which can take back my installation as to when it was new. I know home directory could have config files etc..but that doesnt matter, i want all packages and applications reset to how it was when i had a clean install. I am using Natty
