I am trying to install a harddisk, which is already formatted as ext3, into my Qnap NAS box. The web interface of the NAS box shows, that the harddrive has been detected, but I am not able to mount any of its partitions.This is the output from fdisk -l:
Running Debian Squeeze, I used gparted to wipe the fat partition on a 8GB USB thumbdrive, and repartitioned it with ext3. Everything goes fine, and gparted and fdisk -l both show the correct partition, but I can't seem to mount it, and automount in gnome fails as well.code...
I have a netbook running Ubuntu Netbook Edition and I would like a USB flash drive to be automatically mounted whenever I plug it in. The drive is FAT formatted. It mounts when I plug it in but all files are only writable by my user, other users only have read access. I understand that I need to add a corresponding entry to the /etc/fstab file. I've added the following so far:/dev/sdb1 /mnt/USB_DRIVE vfat
Firstly, is that appropriate so far? I've created /mnt/USB_DRIVE as root. Next, I'm not sure what options I should be finishing the line with, especially to get all users to be able to write to the drive.
I have 2 computers, one running ubuntu 9.10 Karmic and the other runs Windows 7.
I have several sata hard drives that I keep files on. They are all formatted ext3. I have a blacx sata to usb dock on my ubuntu computer that I use to go through files and back up and such. I have a usb to sata dock on the windows 7 machine.
When I plug in the hard drive Windows says that it has to be formatted and the drive is "raw"
I can check the drive in ubuntu and everything is right
I tried installing ext2fsd and it sees the drive but wont let me select any file type or mount it. I think because its going through the usb port.
So how can I make windows 7 see and be able to access an ext3 formatted drive thats plugged into the usb port?
There were some files residing on my ext3 file system, using Ubuntu as my linux distribution. Yesterday I formatted the hard drive using a windows install CD, rewriting it with a new NTFS partition. I'm willing to restore my personal files deleted due to this format.
Dual booting Ubuntu and XP, I've been using ext2fsd for a long time.Recently I did a fresh install of Lucid. Now when I try to run ext2fsd from XP, it tells me that my ext3 partition needs to be formatted.I vaguely recall having had and solved this problem in the past, but I just can't find the solution.
I have a question, i accidentally formatted an lvm volume as ext2 after creating it. Then of course, we copied a ton of data to it before I realized it was ext2. (I guess ext2 was the default when using mkfs without a -t) Anyway - can I just use tune2fs -j on the LVM just like I would a /dev/sdx device?
By mistake I formatted an ext3 partition on my external hard-drive. Now it has turned into a vfat filesystem. Is their any chance of recovering the lost data?
I have an image of an ext3 file system done with dd. I know that the file system is corrupted but I want to try to recover some files. Whatever I dd it again to the original partition or assign the dd image to a loop device, that's what happens:
- dumpe2fs -h gives me a valid ext3 superblock.
- as I try to mount the device read only, it fails with a bad magic number error.
- executing dumpe2fs -h again gives bad magic number error.
- trying debugfs or fsck with backup superblocks fails the same way.
For me it seems that in spite of mounting the device as read-only, mount command do something wrong with the superblock as before the mount the superblock is correct and it's there.
I've lost my admin password on my current Windows OS and would like to install Linux Ubuntu or a similar user-friendly distro of Linux alongside, see how that goes and possibly reformat my PC with Linux as I was told it would convert NTFS formatted drives to ext3, not delete them.
How well is the ext4 new file system mounting compatibility with the older ext3 previous Linux installations ? I refer to Ubuntu 9.04 and the new Fedora 11 which have the option to install with the ext4 file format. Will it be better if I install with the older ext3, so that I will be able to mount all other Linux from each other in a multi-boot system ?
I have an external drive which is formatted for Linux (ext3) and want to re-format it to use it under windows. I have no data on the disk that I need, just want to re-format so I can use it for a backup for my windows7 laptop.
Last night I made the mistake of formatting my media drive. Before the format, it was ext4. then I formatted it to ext4 again because I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing(this mistake only gets made once). Now im looking for away to recover any/all of my data. The drive in question is 1tb. I have not written any new files to this drive.
start getting Linux up and running. Like a lot of people, I chose an older computer I could fuss with, a 500mhz 256meg ram machine, and decided to install Puppy on a spare 40meg hard drive I have, as my bios does not boot from usb...I think...
Anyway, I have found that my bios does not recognize the hard drive when formatted to ext2! I have taken the drive and formatted it back to ntfs, and my bios recognizes it, and then back again to ext2, and nope, it's not there, thus I am still booting puppy from the cd...sigh...
Is my bios so out of date that I'm just out of luck? Is there anyway to check this?
I loaded Ubuntu 8.4 on a data drive (second drive no OS) from a Windows XP-SP3 system. I MEANT to load it on the main XP OS drive. Bottom line I formatted a FAT-32 with Ubuntu 8.4. Can I (freeware hopefully) roll back the Ubuntu formatted drive to FAT-32 so I can recover my data?
I have a dvd that was made as a back up using ISO 9660 and windows reports that the disc isnt formatted and is empty but linux will report the it's an ISO and has 0mb free. access the files on this disc?
I have purchased a DLink Sharecenter Pulse NAS as my PC failed. I wanted to put the two SATA drives in and extract the data before formatting to use as JBOD or RAID. However, before I managed to access my data, the setup software started formatting the drives. I switched it off immediately.
Purchased a SATA to USB2 lead and connected to my work laptop but I cannot see the drive(s). Used Partition Magic and each drive has 3 partitions - of which show about 74GB as used and 2 x 512MB as not. Looks like the drives have been partly set for Linux but the format was not comlete. Have tried to use explore2fs to read them but I cannot access the 74 GB partition only one of the 512MB partitions.
I'm a bit stuck now - any one got any ideas how I can get my files off the 74GB partition before I put them back in the NAS to format.
I have a large RAID array of 12 TB attached to one of my Ubuntu server machines. The RAID volume is formatted with NTFS. The problem is that I can not mount this volume in Ubuntu. I can read it normally if I attach it to windows machine.This is the output from "sudo fdisk -l":
It seems to be (we have experienced) that 10.10 can't handle having an older ext3 drive mounted to a folder on the 1010 ext4 drive. The files get "corrupted", but afterwards, putting the drive back into the original older 9.04 system, the files are perfectly fine again.
is there a way of sharing an ext3/ext4 formatted partition on an external USB drive between different users (uids) on different Linux machines without creating a group for this purpose, setting the group ownership of the partition to this group and adding each respective user to the group on every machine?This would mean that I need to have root privileges on every machine... which I may not have in some cases.I'm using the partition to store the code I'm developing on Linux and I would like the option to be safe... if possible.I could use a vfat partition but then I have no control of the rw rights + I cannot develop directly in the dir: I would always have to tar.gz the directory, extract, work, tar.gz, copy to the external drive.
how to reformat my Bufalo USB drive to EXT3 format so that I can use it as a secondary drive for my Humax PVR. I am a new user to both Linux Ubunto and Gparted I have downloaded Gparted and connected the external drive to my laptop which is running Ubunto and can see the external drive I have never partitioned or formatted a drive before.
I am wondering if any of you technical guys would be willing to format my Western Digital external USB 1.5 TB Hard Drive to Linux EXT3. I am naturally happy to pay for your time and trouble and for postage. The WD drive is for storing video footage and will be connected to my Humax Freesat HD Digital TV Box(not a computer), and the Humax Box will only record high deffination programmes in EXT3 format. I've tried to do the job myself with my PC, but have failed to change my system to format in Linux.
I have a external HDD with eSATA and USB connectors available. I want to use this HDD to store my backups. The HDD should be encrypted (my main system is as well).
So here is what I did so far: 1) I used the following code to create the encrypted LUKS partition with EXT3 Filesystem: Code: cryptsetup -c aes-xts-plain -s 512 luksFormat /dev/sdb1 cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdb1 luks mkfs.ext3 /dev/mapper/luks The system always hang when I executed the "mkfs.ext3..." command, so I switched the HDD from eSATA to USB and then it worked fine.
2) When I switched on the ext. HDD the first time, the drive was recognized automatically and Nautilus asked for the password. I typed it in as checked the checkbox to remember the password in the future. For the backup I use a nice script that I found in another forum, where I can define a mountpoint and then the script will check for previous backups and only make a incremental backup based of the latest version. The script also mounts the drive automatically. In order to always have the same mountpoint, I want to make an entry in the /etc/fstab using the UUID of the ext. HDD.
Whatever I tried, it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong? Not sure if I need it though.
I created the mountpoint with this command: Code: sudo mkdir /media/backup-hdd Now it seems the mountpoints owner is not root - strange right? Code: 2 4 drwxr-xr-x 3 michael michael 4096 2010-01-15 02:45 backup-hdd How should I mount this drive correctly? It will be automounted as every USB device, but that should not be the case. I want the script to mount and unmount the drive.
Anybody know how to make an ext3 or 4 partition start up at boot with only the owner and its group having read and write access permissions.I don't want 'others' to have folder access. This is what i have done. / etc/fstab:/dev/sdb5/media/Data ext4 owner 1 2 The folder starts on the boot since it has been allocated a folder as u can see. Next i changed the the ownership and the group ownership of the folder:chown johnny:johnny /media/DataThe problem is that other users can few my partition since 'others' have read access. How do i change that to zero access?
