Fedora :: Wrong Drive Formatted - Recover Lost Data?

I have 3 drives in my computer. I installed Fedora 11 on my two biggest one, with the LVM treating them as one single drive. I attempted to install XP on my last drive. As I was installing, I selected my third drive (I'm 100% sure it is the correct drive as it is an 80gb whilst the others are 120 and 200 respectively) and told it to delete the partition on that drive and format. After I did that, it started to format, starting with my 120! I'm fairly sure that it was merely a quick format, as it only took 5-10 seconds for it to format, and that my data is still there. Is there any way to recover my "lost" data, or did I just really screw myself over?

By mistake I formatted an ext3 partition on my external hard-drive. Now it has turned into a vfat filesystem. Is their any chance of recovering the lost data?

I have a laptop with Fedora 12 on it and I accidentally did an dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda (since then I learned to think before I type)
anyway, I stopped it in time (I hope), it only zeroed first 60 MB. So, it killed partition table and boot partition. What I need is home partition, and it should be untouched. home is on a LVM device (fedora default install settings), and I tried testdisk (supposedly handles LVM) but it found only one partition (I guess it's a LVM physical device, as there should be 3 partitions, /, /home and swap) and said it's not recoverable.
Is there a way to get access to files on that partition (partition itself, including file table should be untouched). Partition contains various data (video, audio, and text) I need back (and it's my data, not backed up, and not something I can redownload). Is there any software that can help me with this, and if not, is it theoretically doable (I believe it should be, as the partition itself is not damaged, so it should be possible to read file names and link them with data on disk, am I right)? what is a good way to image the disk, so I can reinstall the laptop while trying to rescue data from image?

Last night I made the mistake of formatting my media drive. Before the format, it was ext4. then I formatted it to ext4 again because I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing(this mistake only gets made once). Now im looking for away to recover any/all of my data. The drive in question is 1tb. I have not written any new files to this drive.

I am new to ubuntu. I was on windows 7 32 bit, computer was running slow with viruses and full hard drive so i installed ubuntu 10.10 32 bit as i believe it to be more secure. Before installing Ubuntu OS I made a backup DVD-RW data disk, it had my brothers holiday pics when he went turkey and morroco. Once I installed ubuntu I needed a DVD-RW and quick formatted the wrong disk. Is it possible to recover the data? I've read somewhere that the data is possibly can be recover.

I have 2 HDD in my PC . The 2nd one is a 1TB Western Digital Harddisk which was formatted in Win XP NTFS and just 1 partition, using it for archieve (Film- Music - Apps ... ). I was trying to use fdisk command , but unfortunately destroy the data , format and partition it like this picture :

I formatted a thumb drive on Windows (not quick format) that contains files I need (video files). Unfortunately, my attempt to recover them with both PhotoRec and TestDisk failed: neither of them found the files. I know they are still there because I scanned it with some Windows software (File Scavenger) and it detected them. I'd like to try to do this with Linux, to figure out how to do it, and save money at the same time.

I accidentally formatted a drive that was ext4 to NTFS in Windows (using quick format only). I tried TestDisk, it does find a deleted partition but doesn't seem to find any files or be able to recover anything. Is there any way I can recover the files?

Using F12 with a LVM Volume, Single disk with OS on and boot partition. The OS HDD is getting i/o errors, but will still boot to the login screen. I've removed the HDD and connected it to a Fedora Live OS on my laptop, connected the HDD and it registers as :

And it tried to mount /dev/sdd2 to view and see if I can recover some files.

missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
Any way to mount the partition to allow me to try and get some data back, or if trying to do a full backup of the drive you can get it to ignore i/o errors.

I bought a new dell studio 1555 from best buy about a year and a half ago. Got the warranty because I have 4 kids and something is bound to be dropped, spilled or smashed at some point. True to my visions, something did get dropped smashed and spilled, and pennies got stuck in the dvd slot. So I took it in when the screen stopped coming on because of a loose connection in the hinge and they did apparently fix that problem, but also were benevolent enough to wipe out my entire hard drive, operating sytem and all, totally free of charge. I guess they figured since I like accidents so much, I would just LOVE having 18 months of data and programs disappear into thin air. I know all about how I should have backed it up, and I am not whining too much over this. I will roll with the punches. But there are just a FEW things on that hard drive I will really miss. Like a few crucial spreadsheets that I was not able to save to my external drive before the screen went south. Now that windows 7, I am not planning on missing at all. In fact I am loving running my new Ubuntu 11.04 from my usb and knowing that those idiots will not be able to screw this one up next time. But I would really like to be able to recover those files if I can. Is there any way to get those back? And I also cannot figure out how to find device manager. Do I have to install to hard drive to use that? I know these are all probably total newbie questions. But hey, i got here as soon as I could. Everybody has got to start somewhere.

my mother wanted to update her iphone and during the process something happened and all of the phone has been wiped and we don't know what to do, regular recovery tools only work with regular storage media and the iphones file structure is too advanced to the point where you can only do this with a machow can i recover the data if there was no backup on the computer that it was using to upgrade

My main partition having all my data like movies, music, files,etc has become inaccessible. Its file system was NTFS. Due to some recent resizing using GParted, the partition as well as my WIndows 7 OS has become unbootable due to some errors. The data partition's file system has become unknown. I don't care much about the OS but I would like to recover my drive. I am trying to achieve this using Testdisk and Photorec but haven't met with much success so far. The main problem is I can see my partition and all my files through Testdisk but I am not able to copy them to another drive. When I try to copy the option I get is of copying them to the DVD and not to any other partition.

I accidentally formatted a 2TB drive of mine (big oops), but have recovered 2 of the 3 partitions using testdisk. My third partition is a LUKS encrypted partition. Testdisk managed to recover a piece of it, but it won't mount as most of it is unallocated. The partition originally occupied all space from sector 2,930,272,065 to the end of the disk -- sector 3,907,024,064. That is about 473 GBs. Currently, the partition only uses space from sector 2,930,272,065 to 2,930,288,129, about 7.84 MB.
The rest of the space is unallocated. Now what I need to do, is to expand the partition so that it occupies all the space that it used to. How would I do this? I cannot resize the partition, cause it would try to recreate the filesystem AFAIK and I don't want that, as it will fry my data. My data is not terribly important, but I would rather have it then not. I attached a screenie of kpartitionmanager. The partition in question is /dev/sdb2.

This is my 6th install of Fedora, begining with Fedora 4 I have had very good luck with all until 9 and I lost all data on drive by my bad clicks in a frustrated session. Now I have a great install of Fedora 10 with the exception that I fouled up and typed in a user (myself-'andybill') and am finding out that the work I need to do cannot be maximized by operating in user - andybill, I need to be super user. I have just moved and have not done any collaboration with our senior partner in a data development start up that he is the intellectual property in deed and law. For me to get back on track my using this OS I have to be master of all libraries, drivers etc. I am a nu-b (only 2 1/2 years, with no computer science background. I have a 1Tb Western Digital Network drive. I was showing someone the photos on this on their XP computer and noticed that each file also had a capitalized version beside. I assumed this was a copying mistake and highlighted all the capitalized copies and deleted them. To my horror all files have vansihed. The next horror came in that XP apparently doesn't move deleted files to the recycle bin it just deletes them. I rapidly went back to my ubuntu machine and mounted the network drive. However none of my normal recovery file methods work on network drives. PhotoRec doesn't list the drive. and sudo ddrescue -r 3 ~/.gvfs/SFTP for [myname] on [address]/[path] ~/LOGFILE tells me permission is denied.

I was using a Buffalo LinkStation Duo to store pictures and the OS in the unit failed. As far as I know, the data on the two 1 TB drives is fine, and since Buffalo uses a Linux kernel in their LinkStation and the format is xfs, it should be possible to get the data off if I can mount one of the drives on a Linux box. I've put one of the drives into an external USB enclosure and attached it to my Linux system, but I cannot get the drive to mount, probably because it is one element of a Raid 1 array.
Most of what I can find on the Web concerns setting up a new Raid array, not creating an array around a drive that already contains data. I have installed mdadm, and I'm running Mint Linux release 9 (Isadora) on an Intel box. When I run mdadm -D /dev/sdb or sdb6, the device and the partition where the data is located, it reports that the device does not appear to be an md device. I'm not sure what that means. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I've got around 13,000 photos on these disks that have no backup (I figured what could go wrong with mirrored copies?).

I just want one last attempt at seeing if there's a solution. My Dell Studio 15 laptop HDD that runs Vista failed, I booted Ubuntu from a CD knowing that I should be able to recover my data.
However, Ubuntu can't find my HDD, it's not listed and "fdisk -l" doesn't result in anything. The BIOS seems to know that the HDD is there though.

I've been trying to discover how can I recover data from a hard drive that as been previously configured with LVM, although not encrypted,but I have been having mixed results. I've been using LVM more and more lately to configure hard drives and my greatest fear is to have a motherboard fail on me and get locked out of the contents.

I am using software RAID in Ubuntu Server Edition 9.10 to mirror(RAID1) two 1TB harddrives. These are used for data storage and websites.I also have a 80GB harddrive for the operatigsystem. This drive has no backup or RAID at all. Should this drive crash and the system therefore to become no longer bootable, will I be able to recover the data the 1TB drives or should I backup the 80GB drive as well?

I didn't realize my system drive had filled up... and TaskWarrior overwrote my 'pending.data' with a 0-byte copy. d-: I had worked SO hard to get all my tasks imported from various other notes (many of which I deleted along the way), and hadn't yet prepared for the possibility of data loss. Should've set it up to use my Dropbox...why doesn't TaskWarrior make ANY backup buy default? That data is so important, and yet so small and trivial to backup. Anyway, my 'undo.data' is totally intact and seems to contain all the information theoretically needed to reconstruct 'pending.data'. Unfortunately right now I have no sample 'pending.data' to look at. d-: OR: does anybody know of a simple Linux utility I can use to recover previous file versions? It's possible no data was overwritten, since the replacement is empty.

I was docking my laptop wich has 4 or 5 hdd connected and I plugged in a USB stick aswell. I was gonna create a new debian USB but I was to tired to notice I deleted the partition and created a new one on the picture backup hdd and formated I as ext4 and then I dd the image to it. I noises it when the USB did not boot on the other computer and I saw it was the hdd that was containing all the files.
So is it possible to recover all the picture that was formated away and overwritten with dd?

I formatted my sandisk 8gb sdhc card and partitioned it to 2gb partitions so that it would work in my cell phone well that didn't work so I tried to do it another way and I set some of it to empty 00x00 and now it obviously won't work and I cannot reformat and partition it back into an 8gb card with just the one partition. I tried all sorts of things to revert the dang thing but have not been able to get it to do anything but stay broken. I hope that I haven't ruined the thing and need to change it back to the way it was. Each time I have tried to change it back it just goes back to empty 00x00 and I tried to use windows as well to format the partition and it won't even recognize it at all.

I was following a tutorial about 6 months ago that I think may have been for a different version of Fedora than I was running. Long story short I screwed up my installation and cannot get past this screen. The login screen has lost all of it's custom GUI theme and I can't log in. For one reason because after 6 months I can't remember my password (which is also strange because I only use the same few passwords for OS logins). I also get this error that pops up and then goes away on it's own.
Install Problem!
The configuration manager defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator. I also get a caution sign icon like this one in the system tray on the login page. When I click on it it tells me that:
Starting Avahi deamon... [FAILED]
I'm not sure I want to spend the time fixing the install as I was planning on giving KDE a spin. I do, however, want to be able to recover some files on the partitions that Fedora was using. Can I just install Fedora KDE on a fresh hard drive and be able to see those partitions automatically and then transfer it to an external? Or will I have to find and mount all of those partitions manually? Also, will I even be able to gain access to those files considering I don't remember my password?
