General :: Editing Windows 7 Bootloader For Sharing Purpose

"Life has been made easier with all Microsoft systems, all versions of Dos and Windows, because each of them has to be installed in an active primary partition and so hence will always has a boot loader in the root partition." So if I already have Windows 7 installed (in a 100gig partition of a 1t hdd) how do I modify the windows booting process so that I can go on to create many additional partitions that will be used for linux distros?

I have 6 Ubuntu 10.10 machines in a network sharing documents. Every time I open a document from a different machine than the origin of the document, I must open a copy of the document to edit it. Is it a way to avoid that?

After installing Windows 7, the GRUB got re-written by the windows bootloader. Now after booting into the live cd and mounting /boot partition (sda2), I tried to reinstall the GRUB with this command grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda as told by this [URL]
But I got the an error which says, Are you sure /dev is mounted? then i tried the same command on the / partition (sda5) which said, cannot find boot directory, Are you sure /dev is mounted?
And installation failed, now after restarting its just a black screen with grub> prompt.

I have windows 7 home premium currently installed and I have just recently installed Linux Mint and it has replaced my MBR with GRUB. Is there any way I can restore the normal Windows 7 Boot Loader and have the secondary option to boot my Linux Mint?

How can i detect what of them got corrupted?
How can i restore bootloader if it's corrupted?
How can i repair bootsector if it's corrupted?
All of these things should be done from linux or from bootable CD.

I want to edit text files on Linux server from Windows, using text editor like Notepad++ or UltraEdit.I've managed to do so using WinSCP. It can edit files remotely and offers me to choose local application to open those files.That is exactly what I need, but when I hit ctrl-s (not every time, in about 50% cases), it waits for around 10 seconds, alerts that connection has failed, and offers me to "abort". When I click abort, it instantly reconnect and save file.

I have windows xp on my first hard drive and Linux on the second hard drive.The windows hard drive is labeled hda1 and the linux hard drive is labeled hdb1.I am using GRUB to boot the linux hard drive and it is installed on hdb.Is there any way to boot the secondary linux hard drive using the windows bootloader?I have tried several online tutorials for it but none of them work.

I have recently purchased a new laptop, which came with Windows 7 pre-installed. I immediately installed Ubuntu alongside it with a dual boot. At first it worked fine, but when I restarted after the first time I used Windows, I ended up with an 'Operating system not found' error. I was able to reinstall the Grub bootloader using an Ubuntu Live CD, which appeared to fix the problem, but the next time I loaded Windows 7 and rebooted, the problem reappeared I think the problem is that Windows 7, for whatever reason, is somehow removing or disabling Grub.

I love how in Linux you can link to folders. get Windows XP to change where My Videos, My Music and My Pictures folders are pointing to, to make them act like Linux symlinks?Is there some way to get the same functionality in Windows XP, maybe by editing the Registry.

I installed Windows XP Pro and RedHat Linux Enterprise 5 on my PC for my purpose. The PC is used by other family members too and they need only Windows OS for browsing. It is becoming problem for them to reboot after the PC enters into Linux by default. I am still learning Linux and I want to edit the /boot/grub.conf file to make Windows as default OS to boot. The following is the content of my grub.conf file (FYI):

Currently my job is to make websites with Django. I use many things like virtualenv, PIL, etc. The problem is, I can't stand Linux on my desktop. I like it on servers, It's greate to use it over the SSH. But for desktop? No way. But for the development Linux is quite essential. Of course almost everything is ported to Windows, but it's not as simple to use as in Linux. For example, Windows shell is awful in comparison with Linux. So I've tried Cygwin, but it's too damn slow. Every time django dev server reloads, it tooks almost 20-30 seconds. In comparison, then using "native" python on Windows or Linux, it reloads instantly. Even worse, Cygwin makes all my system very slow.
I've been thinking about it and have thought up a way to go. I can share a folder with my application with some Linux box. The devserver and everything will run on that box, while I'll be happy editing files and running the browser on my Windows 7. SSH shell is much quickier and handy than Cygwin. Currently there are no Linux boxes in my home network (except for my android phone :) but I have several VDS boxes with Debian.
So, how do I share a Windows folder with VDS box? I can't rely on my desktop IP but I can rely on the VDS's one. I need sharing to be as quick as possible (well, 2-3 seconds ping is OK) and "native" for both systems, so I could use a folder like a normal folder in both Windows and Linux.

I can see the printer in RedHat, but everytime I send a print job, it just does nothing but sit there. As a relative noob with Linux (Ubuntu) I was enjoying learning stuff with Ubuntu Karmic - and everything I tried seemed to work even after my inexpert fiddling - which was nice! However, since installing Ubuntu Lucid I've spent loads of time trying to re-establish the share I had under Karmic whereby my Ubuntu PC's DVDROM was automatically available to my connected Win7 PC.
After a couple of days effort I've got to the point where I can access the CD or DVD mounted in Ubuntu, from Win7 but I cannot access the files within the CD or DVD (Windows Err Mssg: You Do Not Have Permission To Access.. I have noticed that since installing Lucid the mount point seems to be the name of the disk whereas under Karmic it was fixed as something like cdrom1. So if I edit smb.conf I can't specify the mount point as it depends on the disk name. Though to be honest I have no idea if this is anything to do with the problem!
To save what little hair I have left I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. Your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to have my Ubuntu PC's DVDROM available on my Win7 PC for read & write. PS I posted this several days ago on the Ubuntu forum but there's been no replies at all - I was wondering if the question is so daft that they think.

i am having some issues with dual booting my SL6.1 and Windows. The situation is that i recently acquired an old hard drive from a non-working computer of mine with Windows already installed (i know the windows is functional, as i tested it on my new PC with SL6.1 currently installed & everything runs fine)
The problem is that after editing the grub.config to include windows, windows will no longer boot after an attempt to install a legit version of McAffee anti-virus software which coincidently was only after the first attempt at running both OS's in a dual-boot fashion. Except past the windows start up screen before the dreaded blue-screen.
Which is weird because SL6.1 OS will still boot & works perfectly fine like always, so it doesn't really make sense.
My current setup is:
Disk 1: Solid-State:
Boot Partition
SL6 LVM1: Root Partition
Disk 2: Hard Drive:
SL6 LVM2: User, Temp & Swap Space Partitions (Different LVM to Root)
Disk 3: Hard Drive:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
My guess is its windows MBR. The reason i say this is because the Hard Drive contents of the Windows software still appears intact when accessing the drive from the Linux OS. I don't won't to go through the rigmarole of re-installing both OS's. So hopefully their is a relatively simple solution.

How to configure File Sharing server which will be in the same network along with Windows DNS servers and others.Googling showed me that "Samba server" will do the job of file sharing . Okay samba server is configured on Ubuntu Linux machine but how to add this to the existing domain where windows machines are ? Do i have to really add this Samba server to windows Active directory or adding it in the network will do? I've always been confused about this issue of boot partitions. In the past when I install linux I usually have 2-3 partitions.
1. Main OS partition mounted on /
2. Storage partition mounted on /home
3. Swap partition
Why and when would I need to have a boot partition? Even if I dual boot two OSs, I just make one more partition for that other OS. So what's the purpose of a boot partition?

Can you explain me what is purpose of shebang in scripts? I have noticed that my scripts will run without shebang. i.e. When i save my crontab file it says that scripts will be executed in i.e. /bin/sh shell. So, what is the point if I put #!/bin/ksh at the start of script?

I attempted to run various cron jobs as root - just general server make-tidy stuff. But if I edit the /etc/crontab file directly, these tasks don't get run. However, if I use crontab -e as root, these jobs appear to work. Any idea why this might be the case? Also, I understand that user cron jobs are stored in /var/spool/cron/<user> (including root). If this is the case, what's the purpose of the /etc/crontab file?

i turn on my computer today and the windows partition that is normally there is gone, i don't know why or where it went. the part of the harddrive still exsists because i still have the 282GB partition that i can look at through ubuntu.i have is that for some reason since i upgraded to karmic koala, i have a bunch of old kernals also chilling on grub doing nothing, how do i rid myself of those?

I have a folder that may contain text documents, pictures, MP3s, video clips, all sorts of stuff. Supposing that, within reason, I'm not too bothered how long it takes to compress and uncompress them. And suppose I don't care if it's free or open source (well, has to be free as in beer). What's the best compression format/algorithm (whatever it is that I install in Synaptic and choose from the drop down menu in the compression tool) I should use?
