how should i remove a package in a local cache? i tried removepkg packagename.txz and itdeleted its files. but then i tried to install it back, it says its in the local cache so it didn't download the package but instead it installs it right directly. i want it to downloadit once again because the package isn't working.

When I try to locate installed packages I get an error that reports 'No Package Cache Is Available'. It also says 'the package list needs to be rebuilt', 'this should have been done by the backend automatically'. When I click on 'More Details' it says 'Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify it's path and try again'.Can anyone please explain what's going on, and what I need to do to get the package list rebuilt?

Is there anyway to show package size that comes up in the search so you don't have to apt-get install package individually and wait for the installation initiation and then reject to install after it gives u the [y/N] confirmation thing?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install tilp, a program for the link between a computer and a Texas Instruments calculator. I have downloaded all the packages to a local directory. I tried telling yum to install all the packages at the same time, though, the dependencies still fail to resolve (though they are all in the directory). I don't know if it would be safe to force install without the dependencies (even though I would install them later).

I'm a slackware guy and don't use apt but am helping someone else and I almost told them that before I realized that I just made it up out of the blue.
I found that one of my computers was issuing a DNS request to a domain on my local network every time I send a query. I've look around and saw several programs you could install for DNS local cache, but does it not come with some application by default? If it matters, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 with DHCPD and Bind9.Also, I did add nameserver 127.0.0.1 to /etc/resolv.conf, and it's listed before my other nameservers.

Does anybody have some thoughts about a local dns server cache size? What is the optimal one? In terms of memory consumption and number of re-enters into the cache. Lets say that default size is 150, so I've change this to 500 and after some time I see 379 re-enters into the cache. Simply put I need to increase the cache size 2 times. But due to the fact that browser preloads dns names it is not possible to interpret the number of overwrites in terms that it is not possible to say if useful cache entries were overwritten or those that the browser precached ( in other words not needed ). In this case it is ok to overwrite unwanted entries because it is not likely that I'll need these entries anyway
I'm running the dnsmasq on an embedded system with limited ram and with an umts dongle attached. It is important to keep the cache size as small as possible to reduce memory usage and at the same time to reduce number of external lookups because dns latency of the umts connection is high (1-2sec for the dns query)
I had the idea to cache writes to my nfs filesystem on my local hard drive.
It seems CacheFS exists to cache reads, but not writes to nfs.
I would imagine that if I could cache writes to my nfs on a local drive I could have a fast system, but keep all my files where I want them on my network.
I'm thinking about this because I am planning on buying a SSD, and I would imagine if I could set things up this way the system could be lightening fast while keeping things on the network. Currently if I copy a large file (hundreds of MB) it is quite slow, with an SSD and caching, I would imagine the copy could be very fast.
I know I can ssh login without password from a local to a remote. My question is how I can ssh without password from the remote to another remote. Say, I have three machines: A, B, C where A is the local machine. I use the same private/public key pair for all the login. What I can do are:
1. ssh from A to B.
2. ssh from A to C.
3. If I am sitting in the computer B (or B is local), then I can ssh from B to C.
What I am not able to do is:
After I ssh from A to B, I cannot ssh from the B to C. When I try to ssh from B to C, it asks me a passphrase.
I am reading slab allocator, it defines slab cache, i am quite confuse is it same as hardware cache?

I use ubuntu 9.10 karmic(x86). I was using a wifi network in my college,for which i used a proxy. Now i'm back home and am using a broadband connection. When i try to install packages via ..synaptic package manager , it pops with an error saying.. it cannot connect to the proxy "172.16.1.5:8080". Yes ,of course it should not be able to,as i am not in that vicinity anymore. I have changed the settings to direct connection in preferereces->network in the synaptic package manager secondly,changed the network proxy settings and applied it system wide. thirdly, I configured the /etc/apt/apt.conf file.. changed it to Acquire::http :: proxy "false"; But, nothing will work, still getting that error.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.
Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).
I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been reading up on ssh and I don't want anyone to connect to my computer. I am not interested in remote connectivity at all. Should I uninstall ssh? I ran Code: apt-get remove ssh and debian returned "package ssh is not installed. 0 packages removed."
I also looked online and found out about /etc/ssh/ssh_conf but all of the lines on my computer were #'d out. I also added "PermitRootLogin no" at the end. Am I safe from ssh attacks if I don't have ssh? Might be a stupid question but I don't want to fall victim. edit: it seems as though I -do- have openssh-client and openssh-server installed. Should I just leave my ssh config with PermitRootLogin no or apt-get remove openssh-client openssh-server.

I have a long list of files like the following examples mentioned in the Synaptic Package Manager's 'Installed (local or obsolete)':

with the last two digits ranging from 14 to 23.
I currently have Kernel Linux 2.6.24-26-generic loaded (according to System->Administration->System Monitor->'System' tab) [I'm using 8.04 LTS].
I'm hesitating in removing them because I assume that the Synaptic Package Manager would remove these when doing the upgrades. My suspicion is that these are still needed for later versions and removing them would cause a few problems to say the least.
Am I safe to either 'Remove' or 'Completely Remove'?
It would be great to save all that space if these can be removed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOne of Konqueror's unique features is that i can name a local process as the action in a form. When i submit that form, the local process is executed. Very helpful for certain offline tasks. What would make it even better is if i could find a way to pass some data to that local process from the html page. This could be the content of a hidden input item, etc. Alternatively, if there is a way for Konqueror to create or update a local file with data from the html page, that would acheive the same end.
