General :: Local Cache For Apt Packages?
Jun 28, 2011
I have a desktop and laptop at home, both running the same flavour of Debian Testing. How can I configure apt on the laptop so that it first tries to download the packages from the desktop before going to the Internet?

I don't understand this error nor do I know how to solve the issue that is causing the error. Anyone care to comment?

Error: Caching enabled but no local cache of //var/cache/yum/updates-newkey/filelists.sqlite.bz2 from updates-newkey
I know JohnVV. "Install a supported version of Fedora, like Fedora 11". This is on a box that has all 11 releases of Fedora installed. It's a toy and I like to play around with it.

I found that one of my computers was issuing a DNS request to a domain on my local network every time I send a query. I've look around and saw several programs you could install for DNS local cache, but does it not come with some application by default? If it matters, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 with DHCPD and Bind9.Also, I did add nameserver 127.0.0.1 to /etc/resolv.conf, and it's listed before my other nameservers.

I run a gaming clan forum on IPBFree. By all accounts the servers are Down, permanently.
Taking with them 2 years of my Clans Forum posts. I was wondering if maybe Firefox or Chrome keep some sort of local Cache on the HD that i can try and salvage as much data as possible from.

Does anybody have some thoughts about a local dns server cache size? What is the optimal one? In terms of memory consumption and number of re-enters into the cache. Lets say that default size is 150, so I've change this to 500 and after some time I see 379 re-enters into the cache. Simply put I need to increase the cache size 2 times. But due to the fact that browser preloads dns names it is not possible to interpret the number of overwrites in terms that it is not possible to say if useful cache entries were overwritten or those that the browser precached ( in other words not needed ). In this case it is ok to overwrite unwanted entries because it is not likely that I'll need these entries anyway
I'm running the dnsmasq on an embedded system with limited ram and with an umts dongle attached. It is important to keep the cache size as small as possible to reduce memory usage and at the same time to reduce number of external lookups because dns latency of the umts connection is high (1-2sec for the dns query)

I have enabled the option to keep the yum cache when updating Fedora 12 and I was wondering if there was a way in which I could remove old versions of the same package from the cache?
I have Fedora installed on more than one machine and I make them share a common update location for their updates to avoid downloading the same packages twice (bandwidth quota expensive in Australia).
how I could accomplish that? yum clean doesn't seem to have any options to only remove old packages!!!
Example: The yum update cache has:
wireshark-gnome-1.2.5-3.fc12.x86_64.rpm
wireshark-gnome-1.2.6-1.fc12.x86_64.rpm
I wish to only keep the most recent version that is wireshark-gnome-1.2.6-1.fc12.x86_64.rpm, but for all the packages.

I had the idea to cache writes to my nfs filesystem on my local hard drive.
It seems CacheFS exists to cache reads, but not writes to nfs.
I would imagine that if I could cache writes to my nfs on a local drive I could have a fast system, but keep all my files where I want them on my network.
I'm thinking about this because I am planning on buying a SSD, and I would imagine if I could set things up this way the system could be lightening fast while keeping things on the network. Currently if I copy a large file (hundreds of MB) it is quite slow, with an SSD and caching, I would imagine the copy could be very fast.

I ran into some complications with my ubuntu 10.10 install and couldn't boot into the desktop. I decided to use a live CD to get access to my downloaded cached packages and copied them to my windows partition, now I've re-installed ubuntu and manually restored the apps into the /archives/ directory, I've installed a lot of apps from the directory already but AptOnCD has refused to properly reflect the apps I have there, is there something I'm overlooking?

My cache is full, and I've tried doing "apt-get clean" to no avail. I also can't find any apt.conf file in my system.Here is a screenshot of the error message that pops up when I open Synaptic Package Manager:PS: I'm pretty new to Linux, especially Debian; most of my Unix-like OS experience is with Mac OS X. My Musix installation is in a VMWare machine.

I wonder if i can install packages that already exist in local directory using synaptic for example: I downloaded a set of programs with there dependencies and stored them in whatever folder, and i'd reinstalled my distro and i need to install just google chrome browser for instance, it's will be very difficult to install it among other packages. it will be very useful if i forced synaptic to install chrome locally instead of downloading and installing them from the internet.

I have fedora 11 as a host and two guest os rhel5 on VirtualBox. I wan to install a local repository on fedora 11 so that my guest os rhel5 can install packages through http with yum.To do this what I have done so far:
>Install httpd
>chkconfig httpd on
>service httpd start
>createrepo -v /var/www/html/rhel5/
>create file rhel5.repo in guest os /etc/yum.repos.d/
Code:
[RHEL5]
name=rhel5
baseurl=http://192.168.1.1/rhel5
gpgcheck=0
Here 192.168.1.1 is my fedora 11 local IP but have a look on the following error msg:
Code:
[pc5 ~]# yum install nfs*
Loading "rhnplugin" plugin
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
[code]....
fact is same process i have followed when i had rhel5 as a host os and i found no problem.Is there any problem with fedora 11 createrepo command that does not allow rhel5 to install package over http.

I was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.
Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).
I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?

I know there has to be an easier way to do this than to download each file individually. On an ftp site I would just use
PHP Code...
But with those files being on an HTTP server and wget not supporting HTTP file globbing I'm at a loss.
What is a one step method to recursively download all files in a directory on an HTTP server?
