Networking :: Local Dns Server Cache Size Optimization

Apr 24, 2011

Does anybody have some thoughts about a local dns server cache size? What is the optimal one? In terms of memory consumption and number of re-enters into the cache. Lets say that default size is 150, so I've change this to 500 and after some time I see 379 re-enters into the cache. Simply put I need to increase the cache size 2 times. But due to the fact that browser preloads dns names it is not possible to interpret the number of overwrites in terms that it is not possible to say if useful cache entries were overwritten or those that the browser precached ( in other words not needed ). In this case it is ok to overwrite unwanted entries because it is not likely that I'll need these entries anyway

I'm running the dnsmasq on an embedded system with limited ram and with an umts dongle attached. It is important to keep the cache size as small as possible to reduce memory usage and at the same time to reduce number of external lookups because dns latency of the umts connection is high (1-2sec for the dns query)

Fedora :: Error: Caching Enabled But No Local Cache Of //var/cache/yum/updates-newkey

I don't understand this error nor do I know how to solve the issue that is causing the error. Anyone care to comment?

I know JohnVV. "Install a supported version of Fedora, like Fedora 11". This is on a box that has all 11 releases of Fedora installed. It's a toy and I like to play around with it.

Software :: Have Local DNS Cache?

Jun 29, 2011

I found that one of my computers was issuing a DNS request to a domain on my local network every time I send a query. I've look around and saw several programs you could install for DNS local cache, but does it not come with some application by default? If it matters, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 with DHCPD and Bind9.Also, I did add nameserver 127.0.0.1 to /etc/resolv.conf, and it's listed before my other nameservers.

Hardware :: Lshw: L2 Cache Size Vs Capacity

May 22, 2010

I just bought a laptop with a T4400. Looking through lshw output turned up the following for the L2 cache:

Code:
*-cache:1
description: L2 cache
physical id: 6
slot: L2 Cache
size: 1MiB
capacity: 4MiB
capabilities: burst internal write-back unified

I'm curious as to why the size (1Mib) and capacity (4MiB) are different. Surely it can't be possible to stick something on the CPU to increase the L2 cache size, right?? So what does this mean?

I'm running 64-bit Linux Mint (derivative of Ubuntu). The kernel config says CONFIG_X86_L1_CACHE_BYTES=64 but I found nothing about the L2 cache.

Can I somehow unlock more cache to get a 4MiB L2 cache for free?

Hardware :: Local Hard Drive As Cache For Nfs Mount Writes?

Jun 18, 2011

I had the idea to cache writes to my nfs filesystem on my local hard drive.

It seems CacheFS exists to cache reads, but not writes to nfs.

I would imagine that if I could cache writes to my nfs on a local drive I could have a fast system, but keep all my files where I want them on my network.

I'm thinking about this because I am planning on buying a SSD, and I would imagine if I could set things up this way the system could be lightening fast while keeping things on the network. Currently if I copy a large file (hundreds of MB) it is quite slow, with an SSD and caching, I would imagine the copy could be very fast.

Networking :: Server On Multiple VLANs Server Not Responding To Pings From Non-local Subnets?

Jul 14, 2010

I've got a machine running Ubuntu Server that is on several VLANs. Each VLAN has its own subnet and the server has an address on each subnet. The switches are set to allow tagged traffic to the server for each VLAN that it is on. Switch ports ending with workstations are given untagged ports on whatever VLAN is appropriate. Workstations are given addresses on a subnet for each VLAN via DHCP. All this works great and hosts on any subnet/VLAN can access the server as normal via its address on that subnet/VLAN.

Accessing the machine by its address on a non-local subnet is where I run into a problem. Inter-subnet traffic has to go through a router, which has been set up appropriately. Running tcpdump on the server and pinging it from a workstation on a subnet, using its address on a different subnet, shows the server receives the ping, but sends no response:

Code:
sudo tcpdump -i vlan4 -n
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Ping Local DNS Server

May 28, 2011

Last night I setup bind9 on my server. I created a local domain (name.local). The server's ip address is 192.168.1.254

The issue that I'm having is that with my ubuntu laptop, I can't ping the name of the server.

Code:
user@prefect:~$ ping name.local
ping: unknown host name.local
But when I do the same ping from both the server and a XP computer, it will respond.

I can ping the laptop with it's name (prefect.name.local) from both the server and the xp computer.

This is my /etc/resolv.conf file:

Code:
user@prefect:~$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
domain name.local
search name.local
nameserver 192.168.1.254

Also, when I do nslookup name.local or dig name.local, the return with no errors.

Why is it that I can't use the name of the server to access it and that only the ip address works?

Ubuntu Networking :: Forwarding A Port Behind A Local DNS Server?

Jul 9, 2010

Here's my (admittedly complex) situation:

I set up a dynamic DNS address for my home network. Let's call it [URL]. Then I set up one of my machines with a bind9 DNS server and pointed my router's DNS setting to it. I did this so that I could resolve awesome.server.com from machines inside my network and have them correctly find my server. Then I set up a second machine to serve web pages using [URL]. I did this by forwarding port 9200 on my router to port 80 on that machine. This works, but of course, it only works from outside my network.

What is the best way to get [URL] to work from inside my network?

I've tried setting up the iptables on my server to forward that port, but it just times out. I used these rules that I found by searching the internet:

Code:
iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 9200 -j DNAT --to 192.168.0.300:80
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW --dport 9200 -i eth1 -j ACCEPT

However, those rules might be failing because they are intended to forward ports requested from outside the network. I must admit, this iptables stuff is way, way over my head. Is there a different method that I must use to make it work inside my network? Or is there a better way besides iptables?

Networking :: Connecting To Local Network Data Server?

Jul 1, 2010

I'm trying to connect to a data server (basically a big hard drive) in my lab with my computer. On the Mac that's at the workbench next to me, you enter Go -> Connect to Server. From there, enter the IP address that I have (I can't find a server name--just the IP.). It asks you which subsystem you want, queries you for a user name & password, and then opens a window with all the files. Meanwhile, on my Ubuntu machine, I have a "Connect to Server" option under "Places" on my main menu. But when I choose that, I need to select what kind of server it is, from several options that don't seem right. (It's not FTP, it's not SSH, it's not a form of HTTP, and that leaves "Windows share?") I've tried several things, but usually get back 'Cannot display location "smb://<IP-ADDRESS>/" The specified location is not mounted'. I've tried many ways of mounting this drive, but it usually gives me permission denied errors (even though I *know* I have the right login and password--I've logged in using the aforementioned Mac).
