View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Opensuse11.4 and have kmail and Firefox. When I click a url: link in kmail it opens a new tab in Firefox. The problem is that the url is linked to my temp cache files as this file:///var/tmp/kdecache-terry/krun/1589.0.ctt
The tab this opens has most of the link icons stripped out and the links to other parts of the website don't work and I get a "file not found" error and the link is to a file which doesn't exist file:///contribute.php3
This is only a minor annoyance as I can right click > copy the url and paste it to the address bar in Firefox then it works ok. I don't think it anything in either programme that's broken because this happened after an update to Opensuse 11.4 on my previous laptop and has happened again on my new laptop with a fresh install.
Does anyone have an UP TO DATE document, or know how to set up a standard RHEL 4.1.2... 64-bit box to be a YUM Proxy machine? I have found several manuals, all being dated a while ago.
View 7 Replies View Relatedwe are running a Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon Upd 5) Kernel 2.4.21-32.ELsmp since several years. The server hosts an old ERP system who will be replaced at the end of the year. However it is necessary that some collegues are able to write some files to that server regulary. Since we are running Windows 7 on several machines, those users aren't anymore able to write to the samba share. Getting files from the share works fine.
But the problem seems not to be situated at the samba service because also the transfer using SSH (WINSCP) from any Win7 system to the server doesn't work.During testing we recogniced that transfering files smaller then 1kb works fine ... any file greater then 1kb ends up in an connection abort. This works with samba and also using SSH.All the workarounds editing some registry entries in Win7 for improving the interoperability between vista / win7 and samba don't work for us ... and also seem not to be the source of the problem. Is there a general known incompatibility between our RHEL version / kernel and Windows 7 regarding file transfers?
let me know how to clear cache memory ( RHEL 5.1 ) as it consumes almost 100% physical memory.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI need to get a backup copy of a huge directory on one of our RHEL servers. Rather than hook the external USB drive up to my PC and manually copy it all across the network, can I just plug it in to one of my USB ports on the server and rsync it?I know how to do the rsync, I just don't know how to get the USB drive to show up when I do a df -h and how to properly remove it before unplugging it from the server. this is a live server, so I can't go playing around and possibly mess something up.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using RHEL 5 on my server. The client machines are windows XP.File sharing is through samba server which is working okay. On this file server there is a shared directory for users. This directory contains files which are used by various users through oracle APP. and DB server.
At present the folders under the "shared" folder are having all permissions i.e. 777. To restrict certain things, I want that users may read and modify the files but may not be in a position to move or delete the files. How to set the permissions on the folders/files in this scenario?
I will be relocating to a permanent residence sometime in the next year or two. I've recently begun thinking about the best way to implement a home-based network. It occurred to me that the most elegant solution might be the use of VM technology to eliminate as much hardware and wiring as possible. My thinking is this: Install a multi-core system and configure it to run several VMs, one each for a firewall, a caching proxy server, a mail server, a web server. Additionally, I would like to run 2-4 VMs as remote (RDP)workstations, using diskless workstations to boot the VMs over powerline ethernet. The latest powerline technology (available later this year) will allow multiple devices on a residential circuit operating at near gigabit speed, just like legacy wired networks.
In theory, the above would allow me to consolidate everything but the disklessworkstations on a single server and eliminate all wired (and wireless) connections except the broadband connection to the Internet and the cabling to the nearest power outlets. It appears technically possible, but I'm not sure about the various virtual connections among VMs. In theory, each VM should be able to communicate with the other as if it was on the same network via the server data bus, but what about setting up firewall zones? Any internal I/O bandwidth bottlenecks? Any other potential "gotchas", caveats, issues? (Other than the obvious requirement of having enough CPU and RAM).Any thoughts or observations welcome, especially if they are from real world experience in a VM environment. BTW--in case you're wondering why I'm posting here, it's because I run Debian on all my workstations/servers (running VirtualBox as a VM for Windows XP on one workstation).
I just got myself a OCZ vertex 2 SSD and have been moving cache directories to a ram drive to try to help extend the life of my SSD and improve system performance. I have created a ram drive /tmp directory in fstab like soCode: tmpfs /tmp tmpfsnodev,nosuid,noexec,mode=1777 0 0 And have since moved my Firefox temporary files to the /tmp directory and it have gotten me thinking, what else can I move here. I am going to upgrade my computer to have 8gbs of ram which is way more than Ill ever need.I would like to move the transmission cache dir there but I dont know how to. Anyone have any tips on that? I was thinking of maybe a script that will run when I login to create a symbolic link?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhat are the bare minimum configuration files that would be needed to rebuild a RHEL server? We are thinking about creating a generic base image and then just copying over the necessary files (fstab, hosts, networking, etc) to get a failed system back up and running in the least amount of time possible. I am fairly new to Linux and have suggested that we have a share on a redundant server that is /server_configs/Svr_name/*.* (names are subject to change and *.* would be all of the pertinent config files to make a fresh build customized enough to emulate the failed server). Is this even possible and/or plausible?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI experienced a full hard drive yesterday due to a massive error_log. We took care of the errors, but later found out we were missing files, including a MySQL database table. Having a shopping cart and ecommerce stuff on the site, we found that some of those files were missing, too.Does RHEL 5 have some sort of feature for automatically deleting files when the partition is full? If it does, I want to turn it off.

I have a backup folder which I need to prune and I've been trying to do a find and destroy action on files in this folder which have not been modified for more than 30 days. I figure if no users complain that their files have been missing for more than 30 days, it's safe to delete them from this folder.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to set up my squid3 proxy as a transparent proxy - right now, I have to manually configure browsers to access via proxy. I understand that I have to put some rules into Iptables and also some further directives in the squid.conf.
I have a couple of specific questions. The proxy server is running on a Ubuntu 10.04 workstation and this machine also acts as a dhcp server for the network. I have just one subnet , namely 192.168.0.1-254 There is only 1 network card. Is it much easier to put in a second network card or is it just as easy to configure the existing lan card as a dual IP?
Is it necessary to configure these 2 IP's ( whether they are via 2 lan cards or dual IP on single card ) to be on different subnets. i.e ETH0 192.168.0.1 and ETH1 192.168.1.1 or is ok to have something like ETH0 192.168.0.1 and ETH1 192.168.0.254 ( where ETH0 is the one facing the LAN and ETH1 points to the modem router / switch i.e The Internet ) Where specifically do I save the Iptables rule configuration file and what must I call it ?
We are planning to migrate our LINUX server from RHEL 3to RHEL 5. What are the configuration difference between RHEL 3 to RHEL 5 for webserver installations?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy server was hit with an injection script which has placed code across many of my clients files. I need a script that can remove a block of php code that spans multiple lines, multiple directories/files and is dynamic, meaning that part of the code changes. I think using find/sed is what I need but cannot seem to figure out how to get it to work. The following is the script that is being injected everywhere. The catch is that they have generated dynamic code at the start/end of the script. (I have commented the parts that are dynamically changing on EVERY instance).PLEASE NOTE: Directly following this script is the start of a valid php script that I do not want to delete.

View 1 Replies View Relatedwe need to log web access of a certain set of users for analysis. We decided to setup a proxy server which just logs all the requests but does not do anything else like caching/access control etc.All users will be using a fixed set of computers and hence we can redirect their requests to the proxy. I came across Squid, but found it to be too heavy for our requirements. Is there any other proxy-server software that is good enough for what we want or is Squid the only way?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a few friends that have seen me bypass firewalls with a socks proxy (SSH). I explained on how it works and how secure it is for browsing the Internet and checking your email in public places. I had at least 6 asked me if I could set up an account on my server for them and they would pay me! Now what I wanted to know was how I can set this up in a server and website where they can register an account and pay me through PayPal! I don't need help setting up the site! Just on how to set up the server to automate this. What tools are needed (ex. ISPConfig, jailkit.... stuff like that?) I don't mind doing this manually but if I get more people that would like this I don't really want to do every single one.
