General :: Remove Proxy In Synaptic Package Manager?
Jun 14, 2010
I use ubuntu 9.10 karmic(x86). I was using a wifi network in my college, for which i used a proxy. Now i'm back home and am using a broadband connection. When i try to install packages via ..synaptic package manager , it pops with an error saying.. it cannot connect to the proxy "172.16.1.5:8080". Yes ,of course it should not be able to,as i am not in that vicinity anymore. I have changed the settings to direct connection in preferereces->network in the synaptic package manager secondly, changed the network proxy settings and applied it system wide. thirdly, I configured the /etc/apt/apt.conf file.. changed it to Acquire::http :: proxy "false"; But, nothing will work, still getting that error.
SPM has just two options 1. Direct connection(no proxy) to internet and 2.manual proxybut my firefox cannot connect to internet with no proxy, It can connect to internet only on auto-detect proxy settings option.Right now my SPM is not working. I can ping the SPM server from my console but apt-get is not working
If I open synaptic pckg mng always have announced an error occurred the following details are provide: E:dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run dpkg --configure -a to correct the problem. E:_CACHE->OPEN()FAILED, PLEASE REPORT
This is my first Linux experience so probably at the prenewbie level. I have installed Xubuntu and played with it for a couple weeks. The question is about software download attempts from Ubuntu Software center. When I attempt to use it I get the error messages: Failed to lock the package manager
Check if you are currently running another software management tool, e.g. Synaptic or aptitude. Only one tool is allowed to make changes at a time. The package indexes are currently changed by apt-get. Does this mean that SPM is active and the Software Center will not function until I change enablement between the two? If so, how do I accomplish the task?
I have used Debian Linux for two years, most recently the seventh or so iteration of Version 5. I use the Gnome desktop and the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Update Manager, for updates because it's easier to build a log with the former. In my most recent update, Synaptic stripped out all the xserver-xorg files47 in all. I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attachedDebian_error_msg.png? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.
E: Type 'nchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu-wine-ppa-maverick.list E: The list of sources could not be read. The above is the console output when i type sudo apt-get update Update manager throws the same error so now I can't install or update software .
It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!
Software center, update manager, Synaptic package manager crashes for no reason. I have not done any recent changes or downloads. I'm running a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04

Got Karmic Koala up on running on my main computer and have been going through Beginning Ubuntu Linux, Fourth Edition. It was printed during Jaunty Jackalope, but it looks like its information applies to most areas.
However, it says I should be able to find msttcorefonts in the Synaptic Package Manage, and it's not there. I double checked Writer and Times New Roman and the other true type staples are not there, so it's not that it was installed with the boot disk.
I'm having a problem where I can't open Synaptic Package Manager. The error message I get is this:

I've just installed Lucid Lynx and it seems to be running fine, except the synaptic package manager is downloading things incredibly slowly. Is this just because the server is busy due to the new release?

I have some programs that I have already uninstalled, but that I now realize have left behind files on my computer. I went to the package manager and selected them for complete removal, but the apply button will not work. Same with ctrl P. Is there a way to get it to completely erase these programs? Is there a better way to go about this?
