Apr 15, 2010A computer security researcher has released a plugin for Firefox that provides a wealth of data on Web sites that may have been compromised with malicious code.
The plugin, called Fireshark, was released on Wednesday at the Black Hat conference. The open-source free tool is designed to address the shortcomings in other programs used to analyze malicious Web sites, said Stephan Chenette, a principal security researcher at Websense, which lets Chenette develop Fireshark in the course of his job.

Jul 31, 2011I am building a midi synthesizer that I'd like to be able to control from linux. I know its a rather broad question, but, how do I go about this? At this point the hardware consists of a simple UART bridge, and I've already written a simple C++ program using termios to send the raw midi data to the device. Obviously I don't want to write a player/sequencer from scratch, so where should I start if I wanted to get this thing to work with, say, a sequencer like rosegarden? Do I write the driver for rosegarden, or hook into alsa or what?

Aug 19, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) with Skype, and I can't get the microphone to work. I can hear them, but they can't hear me. I tried the same headset with my Windows system, and it works fine, so the headset is OK.
I looked at "Sound Preferences", and noticed that when I click on the "Input" tab, the area where you can adjust the volume is set at the minimum, and grayed out, so I can't adjust it.

I've recently migrated over from Banshee which was constantly crashing upon loading my music library (17,891 songs). So preferably I'd like to stay with Rhythmbox as it's the only player I've found so far that can load all my music without issues.

I tried the audacious one but it isn't compatible with audacious-2.2 and audacious1.5.1 crashes with a segment fault on karmic. I also found this [URL] It has a plugin called gstreamer0.10-bs2b which sounds like the same thing I've been working on but I tried a bunch of music players (hythmbox, audacious, xmms2, songbird, and quodlibet). None seem to have anyway to enable the plugin.

Problem occurred without error being set. This is a bug in Rhythmbox or GStreamer.

May 27, 2010I can't hear the music playing on my speakers, BUT i can hear the music playing in my headphones when i insert my headphones jack.
I have tried configuring aslamixer, tried configuring the sound devices but nothing seems to work. i have also installed a lot of music players such as asla player, audacity and so on. i also tried configuring the aslamixer from the terminal but it did's work as well.
I must add that i have linux ubuntu netbook remix 9.10 i386 installed and windows xp home edition sp3. In windows, i have no problem playing any sound. (I am new to linux <2 days> but very experimented with windows <17 years>).

Feb 8, 2010I am trying to hook up an external MIDI keyboard to Ubuntu (Studio) with no success. I can play MIDI files but not get the s/w to reguster any events from the MIDI keyboard. I have a soundblaster LIve! with front panel and am usng the MIDI in on this, with a ROland PC-300 kybd. Headphones work fine on the panel so I know this has been connected OK. The software (Rosegarden) 'sees' the keyboard as in input device but nothing happens when I play.

Jul 18, 2010I just bought an M-Audio Keystation 49e off of craigslist and I'm at a bit of a loss on where to start to use it as an input device for muse or rosegarden.
Distro: Debian Lenny
Kernel: 2.6.26-2-686
Laptop: Compaq V5305WM
Everything seems setup, but I'm at a loss on how to use it in the applications. It doesn't have any sound synthesis abilities on the keyboard, it's just an input device. Without the keyboard I usually go this route:
jackd -R -d alsa &
timidity -Oj -iA &
rosegarden
And midi events output sounds and all that jazz. I'm wanting to input notes / record from the keyboard. But still output all sounds in the aforementioned manner. If I could get those to happen while I record that would help a bunch. Maybe it's just too late in the day for me to wrap my brain around it at the moment.

General :: Play A Midi File In Slackware?
May 10, 2011I would like to know how I can play a midi file in Slackware command line. I write "aplaymidi -p (port number) file.mid" and I see that it is working, but I can't hear anything. As I have Windows XP in a computer and Windows 7 in another, I have to convert the midi files into wave files in order to listen to them in Slackware using play. There is another thing that I haven't ever been able to do in spite of the fact that I have had Slackware installed in my computers since 2002, and this thing is: I have never been able to connect Internet using Slackware or any other Linux distribuition. I like Linux very much but I am frustrated at not being able to do these two things: to play a midi file in Slackware and to connect Internet.

Aug 20, 2010I Bought a new PC. In that I have installed dual OS ( windows 07 and ubuntu ( lucid). In ubuntu I Tried to play the mp3 songs from internet using firefox (3.6.x). But my speaker hasn't produce the sound ( I am using external speakers). I can play ..... videos, games and things like that, during this time my speaker will produce the sound.
But If I try to play mp3 songs from the net, It hasn't produce any sound. I can't hear the sound using head set also for this mp3 songs. What may be the problem please help me ?
PC configuration:
=> core 2 due processor
=> intel 41 rq motherboard
( I am not using external sound cared, Only in-build sound card)
=> samsung sata hardisk
=> OS ( windows 7 and ubuntu 10.4 lucid )
=> Using external speaker and head-set
Note: Same problem in windows 07 too. 2 days before it has worked perfectly. But I have done some changes in sound setting in windows, Then this problem started. Still I am confusing. I can't play the song in both side ( ubuntu and windows) after done that changes.

Jul 13, 2010I've installed a tv card but I can't hear the sound through my built-in CMedia soundcard when I watch tv with TVTime. The tv card's audio output is externally connected to my soundcard's line in input. In the 'Input' tab of the 'Sound Preferences' dialog, I can see the input level meter moving.
Audacity can record the tv sound, and I can hear it when I have the 'pass-through' option enabled, or when I play the recording.
I can play media files without a problem, and I can hear the system sounds.
But for some reason I can't get the tv sound to go through to the soundcard's output.
Obviously I've got the audio configured wrong, but I don't know what to do to fix it.

The audio configuration sound test and the answer to the question No returns a message that says: automatic detection of sound card did not work. I am not sure what else is needed to diagnose the problem.
