I recently assembled a new computer so that all hardware is pretty new. Since then I've been experiencing some problem with IRQs when running Debian 6.0. On random occasions, usually after an hour or so of running I hear a beep and this shows up in dmesg:

We have a COM Express carrier board with Intel Atom processor.What happens is COM board issues a reset signal every 3 sec.I am not sure whether its entering BIOS or not..I could not hear any beep..It is difficult to probe the POST error codes on port 80 in this board.And there is no way for display also..Is there any fatal errors where BIOS resets the CPU..?..As far as I know it just halts on encoutering a fatal error..

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been running to a strange problem. For a few days, a few times a day something seems to take over my machine. Suddenly I can't type, or the key shows up about 5 seconds are being pressed, music players halt, etc. In anticipation, I had top and htop running. Sure enough, when this business begins htop reports all 8 cores firing at near 100% for a few minutes. However, top is telling me nothing about who is too blame. The cup%sy on top shows heavy usage, but the top processes are nothing remarkable, mostly just top and htop and conky, all running at around 1 or 2% on average. I am a bit puzzled as to why I can't see the cpu hog so that I figure out what is going on. My question then: Are there some processes (in kernel space?) that don't show up in top, yet which could be hogging the cpu?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using OpenSUSE for the first time. I quite like it but KDE on 11.3 is really giving me a hard time. My desktop becomes very sluggish after about an hour of usage and the KDE widgets/desktop are no longer rendered properly, with color spilling and bloated borders etc.

I suspect that this might be an issue with drivers for Intel Graphics, though I couldn't find anyone experiencing exactly the same problem as me. I am running a P4 2.4 GHz with onboard intel graphics.
I've come across a really strange issue with one of my RHEL servers. The "free" command shows that 7019 MB of memory are actually in use by my system, but when summing up the actual usage (or even virtual usage like the example below) it doesn't add up - the sum is far less than what is reported by "free":

I recently decided to try KDE4 and would like the change the clock on the panel to display 12 hour format and not the default 24hour format but i can not find where to change this option currently the clock looks like the attached picture. Gnome has this option and I would like to see it in KDE if it exists in the default clock. I am willing to replace the default KDE clock with a seperate widget if one exists for this.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) with Skype, and I can't get the microphone to work. I can hear them, but they can't hear me. I tried the same headset with my Windows system, and it works fine, so the headset is OK.
I looked at "Sound Preferences", and noticed that when I click on the "Input" tab, the area where you can adjust the volume is set at the minimum, and grayed out, so I can't adjust it.
I am running an Opensuse 11.2 system as a backup file server. Several external hard drives are attached via USB and mounted during boot via the fstab file. Recently, I noticed the df command showed the root partition being >65% full, while the du command showed the same drive was only about 20% full. After much investigation, I discovered that some large directories had been created under the /media folder on the root partition that were hidden when the external drives were mounted as directories with the same names under /media. I could only see this when I rebooted with a live CD and mounted the suspect partition without the external drives mounted. Is there a way to examine whether a mounted partition has existing files "hidden" when a separate file system is mounted "on top of it"?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't hear the music playing on my speakers, BUT i can hear the music playing in my headphones when i insert my headphones jack.
I have tried configuring aslamixer, tried configuring the sound devices but nothing seems to work. i have also installed a lot of music players such as asla player, audacity and so on. i also tried configuring the aslamixer from the terminal but it did's work as well.
I must add that i have linux ubuntu netbook remix 9.10 i386 installed and windows xp home edition sp3. In windows, i have no problem playing any sound. (I am new to linux <2 days> but very experimented with windows <17 years>).

At present, after a reboot or a crash the information in dmesg are lost and are not available at the next reboot. Then when you do lsmod, the driver you were calling showed "used by zero". So it seems like the kernel driver was not accessed. In the kernel driver, I had many printk statements, but nothing printed in the buffer. if the driver get accessed and what could cause this?

After getting a SDHC-compatible reader i found it seems there is no part. table on the card and no fdisk(1), badblocks(1) can read that card.
Seems they will wait forever to get a part table.

after installing linux mint 7, I have been getting one beep on shutdown, a google search on this came back as a ram problem...but then i ran across a bunch of posts on ubuntu forums about one beep on shutdown, with an older version of ubuntu, grep does return some paramter errors, but in the mint bug report page those are listed as : benign ignore. it doen't bother me in the least, as long as it isn't a warning of impending hardware failure.

sudo shutdown -h -P 60
Of course this shuts down the computer in an hour. I was wondering if there was a way I could get the computer to beep a few times for the last 10 Minutes and then a few more times for the last 5 minutes?
This may seem like a stupid question (if not completely ridiculous ), but I was wondering if there's a way to configure audio events so that I can use a wav/ogg sound instead of the PC speaker's default beep for small events like hitting backspace in a text editor when it's the beginning of the document (or any other illegal keyboard action), or in Wine applications when it calls for an "asterisk" sound (it just beeps the PC speaker).
I've looked at similar threads, but they mainly just talk about either the beeps that the machine does when it boots up, or simply turning off the beeping completely. What I want to do is substitute the beeps (that are caused by the OS) for an actual sound that's played through the ALSA/OSS/whatever audio device.
I have an indexer for sphinx, and i want it to run once every hour in linux. How would i do this?
