View 5 RepliesI just tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 x86 on my netbook (Lenovo S12 - Intel at all) but this is just horrible. The system is dead after a few seconds but after I moved the mouse or pressed a key it goes on normally for a few seconds and then it stucks again and so on.
Ubuntu 10.04 had the same problem but it was not that extreme! Maybe it stucks after 2-3 minutes but not after 3-5 seconds! And after I installed all the updates it runs just fine. What can I do? I really love Ubuntu and it's a pitty that I cannot use it.
Is there a system admin tool for RHEL on montioring and logging system memory used and released that can dump to a log file?I'm having an issue with memory not being released when an application is closed. I need to have a tool monitor and log so I can troubleshoot to verify that it's an application not the OS.

Now it won't boot past that point ("stopping system v run level compatibility").

View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 2 weeks ago. After a day or so I suddenly couldn't logon anymore. The pc boots, I get the userlist and can enter my username and password, then the userchooser dissappears but the background stays purple and nothing happens anymore. I can still move the mouse and switch to text console but I don't get my desktop. This happens for any user even a new user I created from the command line just to test this. In the end I assumed I messed something up during the upgrade and reinstalled the pc from scratch using Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit.
I was happy for almost 2 weeks but now suddenly I get exactly the same problem. No matter which user account I try I just can't logon (graphically) anymore. Rebooting the system doesn't help. When I run top on a text console I don't see anything hogging the cpu. There is nothing obvious blocking anything. I can't find any clue in /var/log/* or ~/.xsession-errors. I can logon still in text mode as a regular user, my homedir is there, everything looks ok. 1 thing I did notice is that a (few) boots before this started happening autofs suddenly didn't start anymore at boot time (my homedir is mounted from a NAS via NFS). I had to manually start autofs as root to be able to get to my homedir. However this seems to be ok now, automount is running and my homedirs are available. I tried making a new user with a local account just to rule out network issues but even this user can't logon. So the automount issue may be totally unrelated.
Just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid using auto upgrade on Thinkpad T42. Since doing this, I am experiencing random logging off. Suddenly, I get dumped to the log in screen and need to log back in. A search in the forum suggests this was a problem that some people had with Karmic, but is now fixed (I never experienced it with Karmic)
It seems to be associated with Firefox, with it not happened since switching to Chrome, but switching back to Firefox has just resulted in me being logged off. This could be a coincidence of course. This is rather serious problem as I use the Thinkpad to give presentations
I want my Ubuntu 10.04 to login to an Xterm session every time, so I changed it to auto login to Xterm in the login screen settings. This worked fine until I went to do something in a gnome session again, and now even though it is still selected as logging into Xterm automatically, it logs into a Gnome session. Can anyone help me with fixing this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have multiple computers set up in my home (self education on networking) with one used as the main machine, and the others set up as a variety of server types. The main machine is running Lucid, as gui based os. The others are all running the server version. NO Domain controller is installed, no DNS server is installed.
ALL of the server machines boot to a login prompt, allow user name and password entry, and then will fail to login with a timeout error. After anywhere from 8-15 tries, the login will eventually succeed. Error also occurs when logging in via ssh.
I am using Lucid lynx, 1 partition, Linux is the only OS, and I am the only user. Everything is working fine until I click on "Places> File Browser" the system ask for root password.
Then I enter the Root password and I can then go where ever I want. ( It does not do this every time, just most of the time.)
When I open File Browser the first things listed in the left pane are ROOT, DESKTOP, (which is the root desktop), then FILE SYSTEMS, etc.
I think all the little differences I am experiencing are a result of logging on as ROOT user. I think that when I open File Browser (I use this a lot) and it ask for the ROOT password I am then ROOT and remain ROOT until I log off (I never do, because I am the only user). When I am root, things will look and feel different than when I am logged on as Wayne, but there are some things that I cannot do as Wayne (such as open File Browser). I opened K3b to burn a disk and a window poped up saying "it is not wise to run K3b as root..."
I am trying to configure LAMP environment on ubuntu10.04 Lucid system.I am writing the output & attaching files of output of different issues. PHP is not running,I cant figure out why its not working. To add this issue I would like to inform you that nanoweb server is working{I can see the page in web browser"It Works"}.Also MySQL is working fine. To summarize Linux-->Apache/Nanoweb but no bridge between MySQL--X--> PHP. guide me for right direction, how to approach this problem as i am unable to crack this common problem.

I recently installed ubuntu 10.10 and am completely new to linux. Something I recently noticed is that my whole system will freeze 2 times after logging back in, but after that it works fine. I will log in, then it will work fine, but shortly after it will completely freeze. After about a minute, it will unfreeze and everything will work fine. Then after a little longer, the exact same thing will occur. After the second freeze and unfreeze, it never occurs again until I log out and log back in. I do not believe this occurs when first starting the computer.

My first atempt is to restart the NFS, but locked files persist because I can kill the lockd pid process, even using root account , I suppose this is because it's a kernel process. Here is the message error I get when restarting NFS matrix kernel: lockd_down: lockd failed to exit, clearing pid

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an AMD64 system, which I recently upgraded to Lucid 10.04. The system now fails to boot after the upgrade. Recovery mode makes no difference.
When I attempt to boot, I get a series of messages about file systems needing checking, and also some messages from ureadahead-other. (process terminated status 4), though a post here says that status 4 is in fact not an error.
I have sucessfully booted the Lucid desktop install CD in live CD mode, mounted the filesystems, and started parts of my system in a chroot. In that system I tried running an update, and removing plymouth, but it made no difference. how I can get my system working.
I did take a backup of /etc before I upgraded, so I could get back to a karmic install, but the pain in doing so would be considerable, so I would prefer to avoid that if possible.
Since having installed Lucid Lynx, I have several complete system crashes a day, no matter which applications I am using. Lucid crashes without any error message and the system reboots. I have had no problem whatsoever with Karmic Koala (also switched from ext2 to ext4 when installing Lucid Lynx). Is there any probable reason for that or a workaround? Can I paste any logs here for anybody to figure out what might be going on? When I try XP which is also install, the system won't crash (so far...), so I don't think it's a hardware problem.
