I hv installed debian (lenny). My problem is that sometimes it loads perfecly, but on other times it gets stucks at mounted the root. and waiting for the root. wht shd i do?
View 14 RepliesI'm trying to install debian (testing) on my iMac, it boots fine, the keyboard works fine on the first screen, but when it goes to the language selection screen, i can't do anything. I've tried it on graphic install too, and it don't work. Also, i've tried it with an usb keyboard and mouse.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have built a kernel with a ramdisk(ramdisk.image.gz) included. Also in the kernel command line I specified root=/dev/ram0. I am trying to use this ramdisk to load a loopback file as the root filesystem off a fat partition. This is /sbin/init from the ramdisk.

The problem is both umount and blockdev report "device is busy". I want to free up this RAM any suggestions?
Running RHEL 5 in a VMWare image, needed to add a second virtual disk, which worked fine - added it in VMWare, used fdisk and mkfs to format and mounted it as /SI50 so I could then access it. Did all this as root of course. Now I have created a new user and when I log in not only do I not see the new drive, but if I try and mount the drive I get an error "only root can do that". I absolutely have to see this drive as this new user so mounting it only for root to see is no good at all. I'm sure I'm fundamentally doing something wrong here, because obviously the way drives appear in Linux is completely different to windows.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have seen this message more then once and I cannot find information that is understandable to me and which is recent, so maybe the situation has changed with newer kernels/file systems. My question: is this normal behavior with linux and beside from increasing the number of start-ups after which this check runs, is there another way to avoid this? Isn't there a way to do a check after the os has been loaded?

Today I was notified on my netbook that my root folder is running out of space. When I ran the disk analyzer, it showed that most of the space is going towards the videos folder in /media/win7. My ~/Videos folder is symbolically linked to the videos folder on my Windows partition, which is mounted in my fstab using ntfs-3g under /media/win7. The question now is, shouldn't the videos only exist in the windows partition? /media/win7 usage shouldn't affect space usage in my root folder right?

I read some posts about editing the fstab file but I'm not really sure how to do this (if this is the solution) and I believe this could have worked on earlier versions (where HAL was used) Is there anything I can do to make opensuse mount my ipod automatically with full access to normal users?
I am using Gentoo Linux and for a while now, the root file system is mounted read-only on booting. For obvious reasons, this is quite annoying as most services do not start up correctly (I do not use a separate file system for /var). After the system is up, I have to log in, remount the root file system read-write, fix /etc/mtab, mount all other file systems in from /etc/fstab and then start up all the missing daemons. I know that there are ways to make a system run properly with a read-only file system, but I would rather restore the old behaviour of a writable root file system.
The strange thing is that after running mount / -o remount,rw, the file system is mounted in writable mode without any errors. I suspected some problem with fsck, but now I have disabled automatic file system checks on the partition (tune2fs -c0 -i0).When I run dmesg, only these lines mention the partition at all, although I am not sure if not something gets lost because /var/log is not writable:
EXT3-fs (sda5): mounted filesystem with writeback data mode</code>
EXT3-fs (sda5): using internal journal
The line in /etc/fstab looks like this:

All KVM ports are tested and are working fine.
Once the OS is loaded successfully(either automatically or manually), everything works fine.
I just tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 x86 on my netbook (Lenovo S12 - Intel at all) but this is just horrible. The system is dead after a few seconds but after I moved the mouse or pressed a key it goes on normally for a few seconds and then it stucks again and so on.
Ubuntu 10.04 had the same problem but it was not that extreme! Maybe it stucks after 2-3 minutes but not after 3-5 seconds! And after I installed all the updates it runs just fine. What can I do? I really love Ubuntu and it's a pitty that I cannot use it.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm have some desktop computers sharing my Centos 5 server diskpace through NFS. From time to time, without any warning, lockd bugs and all the users that are using GTK applications like Firefox,Gnome.get stuck.
My first atempt is to restart the NFS, but locked files persist because I can kill the lockd pid process, even using root account , I suppose this is because it's a kernel process. Here is the message error I get when restarting NFS matrix kernel: lockd_down: lockd failed to exit, clearing pid
My computer(DELL Latitude D830) halt itself on Fedora 12. When the problem comes,the LED flash and the whole machine loses respond to what I do.The only thing I can do is push down the power button.This problem mostly occure when I'm running VirtualBox or some programme that read or write disk heavily.I don't know how to debug this problem.Is there somewhere any logs which I could see what actually happened when my computer stops working ?

When i type the df command i see that /dev/hda1 as a filesytem that is mounted at '/'(root). Is /dev/hda1 a filesystem. I thought that it is a partition on my hard disk that contains the root file system.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was using the latest stable release of Debian, dual-booted alongside Windows Vista, with the GNOME desktop, installed via netinst, trying to build and install a library that I knew and trusted, when suddenly I couldn't open the Root Terminal. I clicked the link (in Applications->Accessories (I think, whatever the top one is)->Root Terminal), and in the taskbar I saw an item that said "Starting Root Terminal". A few seconds later, that went away, but the terminal still wasn't open. I tried the regular user terminal, to see the same thing happen. Unsure of what was happening, I tried restarting my computer, since that's always the first step you should take in computer problems.
When I restarted, GNOME wouldn't start. The screen would flash a bit for a few seconds, then a dialog box would appear over a background of static that said "The greeter application is crashing. Attempting another one...".t would then go back to the DOS-style kernel, wait a second, and then the same thing would happen. After several of that, I would get a blue screen which said something to the effect of "It has been detected that the desktop environment has crashed six times in the past 30 seconds.
Waiting two minutes before trying again." When it did that, I tried logging in as root to assess the problem. I gave it the correct password, but it said that it was an incorrect login. After several tries (to ensure I didn't mistype the password), I logged in as myself. Same problem. I tried the su command, with the correct password, and it said it couldn't authorise it.
After a lengthy conversation with a friend of mine who was very good with computers, he basically summarised that he had no clue, but that his best guess would be a virus. Upon running the Linux installer, I found the Repair option. Not being particularly familiar with Linux, I used it simply to backup my important files onto a flash drive. I then tried running the Install option, in an attempt to simply write over my existing Linux and make it new again. The installer, however, consistently froze up when trying to start the partitioner, on the "Checking disks..." stage. I figured it was a problem with my partition. In my naivete, I simply used the Windows tools to clear that partition... It destroyed GRUB too, so I couldn't run any OS. I figured my computer was pretty well screwed, and at that point just decided to bring it into the shop and have them completely wipe it.
my computer was backed up onto an external hard driven I brought it back, I reinstalled Windows. Upon restart, it said that it was still looking for GRUB, which made no sense to me. After messing around with it a bit, I decided to just reinstall Linux too. To my lack of surprise, that fixed the problem. Both OS' now ran just fine. The first thing I did on Debian was to install the Clam Anti-Virus, which I understood to be one of the best Linux anti-viruses. However, within about 10 hours, got the same problem as originally. I wasn't doing any of the same things, and between the lack of consistency in activities and the fact that I had an anti-virus running,figured it wasn't a virus. Not knowing what to do, I just left it and have been using Windows since.
My swap is not mounted at boot. get it to mount again? I CAN make it mount after booting but I need to hibernate. I read that I have to edit /etc/fstab but I'm not quite sure as to what I have to do specifically.

# grub-install /dev/hda5
And now my hda5 cannot be mounted with ntfs-3g. Here the error message 'mount' gives:
Failed to mount '/dev/hda5': Invalid argument
The device '/dev/hda5' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
As far as I know, grub-install rewrites the 1st sector of the device, and I've been reading this guide on recover the 1st sector of an NTFS partition. The problem is that the Disk Probe tool is available in Windows only. Is there any similar software in Debian to do the same thing (i.e allows us to edit sectors of the hard drives available in the computer)? Any easier tool / method to restore the NTFS partition without read and write sectors manually.
when I mount DVD-ROM to some files from xterm, the systerm never responsed! I used this command: sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cd I search some info from google ,some guys say these info may help ,but I don't understand why it cab be crashed when I mount the CD from DVD-ROM.

I've been scouring the net and I'm sure it's something simple but here's my problem. I have a BeagleBone Black running Debian from a uSD card. I also have a 1TB WD My Passport external HD. If I have the external drive plugged in when I boot it is mounted under /media/My Passport it is formated NTFS since it was being used for windows. Being that I'm planning on eventually planning on making this a nas/owncloud device mounting at boot is fine but I would like to mount it under another directory. I've looked in /etc/rc.local and /etc/fstab and it does not mention that drive in either place and autofs is not installed.

I edited fstab to automatically mount my windows data partition on boot, but I screwed it up by not specifying the file system type, however that is not the problem, I was able to fix that easily. The problem was that when it failed to mount the partition, Debian automatically entered root and I guess that is to be expected in order for me to fix it, but I never configured a root password and it just gave me full root access without asking any password, not even my user password. I though that was strange so I set the root password and sure thing it asked me for the root password this time without automatically logging into root....
I then tried to lock the root account to see if it will ask me for a password or not, it did but of course I wasn't able to login as root because it was locked now and I was left with no way to access the system. I had to fix fstab from a live cd so that I can login normally as the user....
I didn't know what to search for or if that is the expected behavior if you don't set root password during installation, but it just seemed a bit strange to automatically enter root when you specifically disable root login during installation...
Using one of my Ubu machines (11.04) while his machine is away at rehab. That machine has been running fine, but today he was removing his Android phone and his USB connected NTFS external (both using Safely Remove) and...Phone safely removed Drive gave an error (couldn't remove probably the device busy error) Reboot. Now it won't boot past that point ("stopping system v run level compatibility").

When I try to load up the printer driver downloaded from the Lexmark site I am asked to enter a root administrator password, but when I enter the password I used to setup the OS it will not accept it. I have reviewed the "sudo" terminal password info, but as I am a newbie I was concerned about wrecking the installation.

I tried to install some other software from synaptic but my installation CD isn't being detected like before. What do I do? The CD can be opened etc., but its not getting mounted as /cd-rom/ which the synaptic packagemanger searches most of the time.
