Debian Installation :: Blank Screen On Boot - 7.8 On IMac G3

Feb 19, 2015

I have just installed Debian 7.8.0 powerpc on my imac G3 (400Mhz, 256Mb Ram). I had repartitioned the drive with the view of having a dual boot machine, had OS9 installed on partition 1, linux installed on partition 2 and a ext4 data partition and a 1Gb swap partition. After I installed OS9, I ran Debian Installation CD and was successfully installed. Rebooted, got through the on screen text past file system check, then screen went blank. I searched Google and forund that if I ran ctrl+alt+f1 and logged in, then ran lspci, I could get the ID of the graphics. So I did, and:

Code: Select alllspci

Debian Installation :: On IMac: Screen Goes All Black When Chose In Grub-selection List

May 20, 2011

I have installed Debian a few times now (and other distro's), so I'm fairly used to installing linux. I'm not used to installing it on Apple hardware (back in 2009 on my laptop I had some issues that were solved rather quickly, but that's about it). Now I'm installing Debian Squeeze on a new (well, bought today, but it is the previous model: iMac 11,2) desktop iMac.

Installing goes well (resizing partition, rEFIt, booting Debian 6.0.1a netinstall CD, installing packages etc.) I followed a tutorial [URL] to install grub explicitly with force after installing and running gptsync. Everything went according to the tutorial and I rebooted to be welcomed by rEFIt and then grub: perfect!

BUT when I chose Debian in the grub-selection list, I only see a few lines of starting the kernel, and then my screen goes all black. A few seconds later I hear a sound, and iirc it's the sound of gdm prompting to select a user. I cannot switch to a TTY and I have to use the power-button to shut the system down.

Debian Hardware :: Turn Off Screen On Imac G4

Apr 10, 2010

I have Lenny installed on an Imac G4, running command line only. It's primary purpose will be SSH.

I would like to know how I can turn off the screen when I'm not using it. It will be left on running other things for periods of time, and I want to save power. (and the screen)

Since the screen is built-in, it might have a similar solution to what I would do with a laptop. On the other hand, there are no shortcut keys to dim the screen like on a laptop.

Because it is command line mode only, I will need to know what commands to use to dim or shut off the screen, or to configure an auto-off time limit.

CentOS 5 :: KVM - Stucks At GRUB Screen?

Nov 25, 2009

A newly installed CentOS machine when connected to a 4-Port KVM switch stucks at GRUB screen asking for OS selection menu.

Before starting CentOS box
> IF the view of KVM is set to this computer, GRUB automatically selects the default option and loads the kernel
> IF the view of KVM is set to any other computer, GRUB doesn't load the kernel after default time out. I've to press enter key on

GRUB screen everyday.I want this machine to get OS loaded even in my absence.Once i removed the display cable and tried to start the computer but it again stucked at GRUB screen. Can a linux computer boot without monitor?

Note: CentOS 5.2 is only OS installed on this computer.

No issue before connecting to KVM

All KVM ports are tested and are working fine.

Once the OS is loaded successfully(either automatically or manually), everything works fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get 10.4 Live CD For PPC To Work On Old 800 MHz Flat Screen IMac G4

May 20, 2010

I can't get the Ubuntu 10.4 Live CD for PPC to work on my old 800 MHz flat screen iMac G4. I believe it's supposed to work, but the installation dies with a magenta screen about a minute after selection of any boot option in the yaboot dialog.I tried all the sensible boot choices and options, all with the same result: some trundling of the CD reader, display of the messages related to the ramdisk, more trundling, then a blank magenta screen and no more trundling. The iMac becomes totally unresponsive: no more messages, can't enter any command shell. I get the impression (complicated story) that it begins to install the X server and then aborts.

This iMac has a PPC G4, 512 MB of working memory, and a GeForce2 MX video card with an nVIDIA chipset and 32 MB of video memory. There seems to be no hardware problem: OS-X 10.3 and OS-9 run just fine including wireless networking.

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen On IMac G3 After Fresh Install Of Xubuntu 9.10?

Nov 28, 2010

I installed Xubuntu (Karmic 9.10) several times on an old iMac G3 with powerpc processor. Previously I had installed versions as 6.06 and 6.10 succesfully. But no luck this time. All installs were succesfull if alternate cd's were used.

The problem is that when i boot up i see the bootloader 'yaboot' and after that shortly the mouse logo from Xubuntu. After that the screen turns black and the indication light from the powerbutton turns from green to orange, this means no signal (i guess).

I assume that my screen resolution is wrong and cannot be displayed, the Mac uses 1024x768 if i am right.

My question is : How to access any configuration file to change resolution as I believe is the problem?

Edit: Perhaps there is a way to access command line to change config files.. ? Or using a live CD, but this computer is low on memory and has a hard time using live-CD's.

Debian Installation :: Grub Prompt After Install On IMac

Jun 3, 2015

I recently attempted to install Debian 8 on my iMac (late 2011). I partitioned my drive using disk utility to create FAT partitions (100GB for Debian and 2GB for SWAP) and installed rEFInd to boot into Debian.During the installation process I selected the drives I partitioned and set the mount points for each as / and swap.

Everything was fine and installation was successful and was prompted to restart to set up Debian. However when I did Grub did not recognise the Bluetooth keyboard. Unable to do anything it started the "Debian GNU/LINUX option" and loaded into what seems to be the grub prompt/terminal with the following displayed in bold:

[ 3.538535] i8042: No controller found

Ubuntu / Apple :: Screen Brightness On Aluminum 24 Inch Intel IMac

Sep 1, 2010

Screen brightness on aluminium 24 inch Intel iMac

I was just about to re-install Ubuntu to dual boot with OS X on my 24 inch aluminium Intel iMac. Then I remembered the reason I got rid of Ubuntu the last time... screen brightness.

It is a known fault of these machines - the default brightness is set far too high. Sometimes it hurts the eyes. There is an application I have to use with OS X called 'shades'.

If I instal Ubuntu in VirtualBox I can still use 'shades', but when I run it natively as a dual-boot os, I do not have access to the 'shades' app so the screen is far too bright to use for any reasonable length of time.

Is there a workaround for this, without having to do something on every log-in?

(I am using the 64 bit AMD version of Ubuntu.)

Debian Hardware :: IMac G3 Internet Not Working?

Feb 17, 2011

I'm trying to get my iMac G3 on the internet. I'm running Lenny. I have two options: I could (ideally) get the ethernet to work, or else I could use my phone (Palm Pre Plus) as a modem, which I've done under Ubuntu (the GNOME applet makes it a snap, but I can't figure out what it's doing on the command-line side of things).

Relevant line from lspci:
ryan@dinosaur:~$ lspci
...
0002:20:0f.0 Ethernet controller: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth GMAC (Sun GEM) (rev ff)

Relevant line from lsusb:
ryan@dinosaur:~$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 0830:0101 Palm, Inc.
...

ifconfig lists only the local loopback and nothing else.I've googled and googled and googled for drivers but can't seem to find any--same for getting the Pre to work as a modem. Like I said, I can get the Pre working flawlessly under Ubuntu but I can't find no matter how much I search the proper way to connect it using Linux.

Ubuntu :: System Stucks Until Move The Mouse?

Ubuntu 10.04 had the same problem but it was not that extreme! Maybe it stucks after 2-3 minutes but not after 3-5 seconds! And after I installed all the updates it runs just fine. What can I do? I really love Ubuntu and it's a pitty that I cannot use it.

Ubuntu :: Support For Language While Keeping English As Language Used To Display Desktop?
