Ubuntu :: Natty: Default System Logging Daemon?
May 16, 2011
Can someone tell me what is the default system logging daemon in Natty, and what other support packages should also be installed?
Since the upgrade to Natty from Maverick none of my system logs are being updated and I need to determine if the correct logging daemon is present.

Is there a system admin tool for RHEL on montioring and logging system memory used and released that can dump to a log file?I'm having an issue with memory not being released when an application is closed. I need to have a tool monitor and log so I can troubleshoot to verify that it's an application not the OS.

When upgrading from 10.10 on my machine, Natty set the default boot image as 2.6.38-8-generic-pae, which didn't boot (stuck at the start image: ubuntu logo with 5 red circles). I can boot to 2.6.38-8-generic if I go into previous versions. Everything, best I can tell, works fine after doing this. I'm a complete idiot when it comes to Ubuntu. How can I uninstall/remove the 2.6.38-8-generic-pae image since it clearly doesn't work? Why would it have set this as my default image in GRUB? How can I set the normal image as default in GRUB?

This may sound like a silly question, but I can't seem to find the answer. How can I go about making Gnome the default desktop session in Natty?

So I did the update to Natty and it went pretty smoothly, with one exception. My rig has two sound cards in it: the integrated motherboard sound card (Intel HDA audio) that I don't use, and a Sound Blaster Audigy (the original Audigy 1) that I do use.
This setup has worked fine in Ubuntu for as long as I can remember, but after the upgrade to Natty it appears that GNOME no longer knows that the Audigy is the card that's in use. It insists on routing things like volume changes via gnome-volume-control to the motherboard. I can confirm this by watching the volume levels for each card in alsamixer while modifying them in gnome-volume-control; the levels move appropriately on the integrated card, and stay stuck on the Audigy.
What makes this bizarre is that it's not that the Audigy isn't recognized -- it's shown in the "Hardware" tab of Sound Preferences, and the system plays back audio just fine through the speakers connected to the Audigy. It's just that I can't change the volume on the sound through the panel applet anymore. Normally I would fix something like this by using the Hardware tab to switch from the one card to the other, but in this case when I make that change it doesn't stick -- if I close the Sound Preferences and then open it again, it's right back to being set to the integrated audio.
Maybe this is a PulseAudio issue with older Audigy cards? I have no idea.
I can change the volume with my speakers' volume knob and my keyboard's media keys, I suppose, but I'm so used to be able to change it via gnome-volume-control that not being able to feels bizarre. Has anyone else out there with add-on sound cards installed alongside motherboard audio experienced this?

I am using Lucid lynx, 1 partition, Linux is the only OS, and I am the only user. Everything is working fine until I click on "Places> File Browser" the system ask for root password.
Then I enter the Root password and I can then go where ever I want. ( It does not do this every time, just most of the time.)
When I open File Browser the first things listed in the left pane are ROOT, DESKTOP, (which is the root desktop), then FILE SYSTEMS, etc.
I think all the little differences I am experiencing are a result of logging on as ROOT user. I think that when I open File Browser (I use this a lot) and it ask for the ROOT password I am then ROOT and remain ROOT until I log off (I never do, because I am the only user). When I am root, things will look and feel different than when I am logged on as Wayne, but there are some things that I cannot do as Wayne (such as open File Browser). I opened K3b to burn a disk and a window poped up saying "it is not wise to run K3b as root..."

I have a Linux box, running rsync, only problem is, I have to turn it off at night. What I want to do is turn it on and when it turns on, rsync will already be running in daemon mode rather then having to run rsync daemon. Does anyone know the solution? I'm sure its simple, I just cannot figure it out

I recently installed ubuntu 10.10 and am completely new to linux. Something I recently noticed is that my whole system will freeze 2 times after logging back in, but after that it works fine. I will log in, then it will work fine, but shortly after it will completely freeze. After about a minute, it will unfreeze and everything will work fine. Then after a little longer, the exact same thing will occur. After the second freeze and unfreeze, it never occurs again until I log out and log back in. I do not believe this occurs when first starting the computer.

i've written small tool in C which makes measurements on my router (OpenWrt White Russian).
It is working as a deamon. If the tool is started manually, everything works fine. If it is started per script on startup, the following system call doesn't work :
Code: sprintf(command,"/bin/cat /root/%s%s | /usr/bin/ssh -p2222 user(at)host -i /root/.ssh/id_rsa "/bin/cat >> result/%s%s"", apmac, source, apmac, dest);
rc = system (command); the returned rc in this case is 256.
first i thought it is a problems with the user rights for the tool, so i have added +s to it. but that didn't help. as i said, when the daemon is started by hand, the system call works fine.

I switched over to Fedora a couple of days ago. I'm using the built-in firewall shipped with it but I can't find out how to enable logging of dropped packets. Among others I'd like to use psad that needs firewall logging. Is there an easy way to do this? I'm not an iptables "expert".

My gnome-control-panel (or System Settings) only shows a 'Users' icon, all the rest are gone. I've tried reinstalling gnome-control-center and all related pkgs, so it's a configuration problem of some sort. I see this if I enter a Unity session, Gnome Classic, or Gnome-Session.Here's a screenshot of what it looks like:

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and I'd like to know when does the update manager upgrade the system to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I do not want it to do the upgrade too early,as this might cause problems.I heard they're going to release Natty by the end of April, when it passes the beta stage but it will take 3-4 months for the bugs to be fixed. Also, please answer my other thread,it has new posts: [URL]

Whenever I'm browsing the web on one of my natty machines, I'm subject to periodic reboots that leave nothing in the syslog. Here's the two constants I've discovered thus far.
It only happens when I'm using a browser (plugin?).
It doesn't matter whether I'm in Chromium or Firefox.
It doesn't matter whether I use Unity or Gnome 2.
This happens every 2-3 days from what I can tell.
This problem is not power related because I've tested it with and without an UPS present.
The computer does a full reboot without any shutdown procedure.
The configuration of this computer is as follows:
Intel i3 2100
ECS H67 Dual Nic
Haupaugge Dual ATSC Tuner
MDADM RAID 10
8GB 1333MHz (MemTested)
The browser plugins are as follows:
Flash 10.3r181
VLC Multimedia Plugin (compatible Totem 2.32.0)
Windows Media Player Plug-in 10 (compatible; Totem)
DivX Web Player version 1.4.0.233
QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6

Chkconfig is a utility to update and query runlevel information for system services. Chkconfig manipulates the numerous symbolic links in /etc/init.d/, to relieve system administrators of some of the drudgery of manually editing the symbolic links.
In Debian, there are several tools with similar functionality, but users coming from other Linux distributions will find the tools in this package more familiar.
Go to Terminal and open it and type the command "chkconfig' press enter. code...
after installing just type "chkconfig"
you can see list of service which one is off or on in your system code...

I've been looking at possible options - I might install new from the CD if I have to. But before I do that, I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to restore the system to the way it would have been if I'd actually done a clean install - but to leave /home intact and perhaps the application also. (I haven't installed that many). I'm running 9.10, upgraded from 8.04>8.10>9.04 - it's working but There are some issues I can't seem to resolve such as stuttering audio.
