I'm trying to launch a root terminal with a profile preloaded, but I'm not yet used to the way gnome handles its syntax, so the default link to root terminal:

But this did not work, probably because in this case I'm not calling directly on gnome's terminal.

General :: Lost Menus In Root Profile?

Jul 12, 2011

I've been handed the role of looking after my company ftp server which is running redhat. I've logged on as root & have somehow lost all of the menu items from the grey toolbar. All i now have on the desktop are the disk & partition icons. I haven't changed / added anything, just logged on to the box. The only way i can log out or reboot is to press in the server power button which cannot be right ? Is there anyway of making the menu options visible so that i can at least familiarise myself with the O/S ?

General :: Adjusting $PATH In /etc/profile Does Not Affect Root

May 25, 2011

I added a directory to the $PATH variable in /etc/profile. This works for my user account but not for root. It's easy to add it to my /root/.bashrc but I would like to understand whats's wrong. It's a widely unmodified Debian 6 so I think my changes should do the trick.

Here is what my /etc/profile looks like:

# /etc/profile: system-wide .profile file for the Bourne shell (sh(1))
# and Bourne compatible shells (bash(1), ksh(1), ash(1), ...).
if [ "`id -u`" -eq 0 ]; then

[code]....

Edit: The path I added is the distcc-stuff. Here is what echo $PATH tells me:

$ echo $PATH
/usr/lib/distcc/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games
# echo $PATH
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin

Software :: Launch Kdesvn To Have The Same Repository Loaded In The Same Working Directory?

Apr 28, 2011

In kdesvn there is the Subversion->Ceneral->check out repository and there is also the File->open,

1) what is the difference between these two?

2) Also is there a way every time I launch kdesvn to have the same repository loaded in the same working directory?

3) When I change something into a file should I do file or whole folder commit? I am not sure what will be the best based on that I only write one comment which in the first case associates with the file only and in the latter associates with the whole folder.

4) What that blame button in the gui does?

General :: Send An Email From Root Console Using A Non Created USER?

Dec 29, 2010

I scan a document with root pressing the scanner button. I would like to send an email using my gmail account. OK. nothing difficult with that... mbsmtp + mutt for sending trhough the sh script.

1-root is to be avoided at max to do some internet duties, due to security. Apt-get is good, but ok surfing or email sending shall be avoided for higher security.

2- sudo or su running mutt through this way, ok, using an existing user. OK, possible and simple, but not comfortable since you have to use an account of an user existing (create a new user for scanner and email?? - no, come on, we have linux and can maybe find a solution)

how to send an Email from root console using an non created USER?

Fedora :: Loaded 13 Recently And Soon Couldn't Access 'Root"?

Old windows user finally real tired of them.. Kudos to Fedora 13 as the only popular Linux OS available for us frugal folk that embraced proprietary hardware on my old pukey hp pavilion laptop dv4000 wi fi card.Sad to report massive issues after allowing some 330+ updates to possibly infect this great OS. I'm currently running this 'Live" so I'm staying brief. My strategy will be to not allow any updating until I'm sure they are trusted and or needed, as this is the chosen OS, and I pledge to be moe involved as I try to figure out where or why this initial install went way south

OpenSUSE :: Cannot Launch LuckyBackup As Root

Feb 25, 2010

After I installed luckyBackup, two icons were added to the 'More applications' window. The first one launches luckyBackup and works fine. The second one is called 'luckyBackup (super user mode' and is supposed to launch luckyBackup with root privileges. However nothing happens when I click on it. I see that the associated command is 'su-to-root -X -c /usr/bin/luckyBackup'. Typing that command in a shell results in an error as su-to-root does not exist. So... is this syntax ('su-to-root -X -c /usr/bin/luckyBackup') supposed to work, or shall I edit it (how?) in order to be able to launch the application as root?
