I can login as root in to Gnome and ssh but not in the console In fact I can login with anyuser in to Gnome and ssh but not in the console. By the console I'm referring to tty1-tty6. When the login screen is showed I write the user and password but then a message is quickly(I cant see it) showed and erased and the login screen is showed again I looked the file /etc/security/access.conf but all the entries are marked as comments. I also looked the file /etc/securetty and this is the content:
console
vc/1
vc/2
vc/3
[code]....
I even can use "su" with root with no problem. The next entries are written in the /var/log/audit/audit.log file everytime I has this error:
I just installed Jessie amd64 for the first time. Few problems so far, but Alt-F2 to Alt-F6 no longer switch to another tty - there's just a black screen with a flashing cursor that doesn't respond to keystrokes. I rely on being able to switch between ttys a lot, so this is inconvenient.
I've searched and found a workaround for grub2, but I'm using grub-legacy (and don't want to switch to grub-pc as it's over complicated IMO). Graphics hardware is AMD 780G/SB700 (using firmware in firmware-linux-nonfree).
How can I start a program from tty1 console text mode to be executed in tty2 console text mode? Actualy I would like to start a program (chat client cli program) in tty8 automaticaly when linux PC boots.
my linux system doesn't have X only console login possible. i would like to deny all user to login from any sources, local machine, remote console (putty, winscp) etc. except root.
i've found something about /etc/security/access.conf and i've put:
+ : root : ALL - : ALL : ALL
but still users other then root are able to login (via putty for example).
Right after logging in, as the graphics starts up the screen goes blank then goes to tty2 with a login prompt and no graphics at all. I have Kubuntu 10.04.1 I used the standard Kubuntu install disc. The Computer is a Compaq dm 220mt desktop 2.80 Ghz, 1.2 GB Ram, 40 GB Hard drive. I originally had Ubuntu 8.04 on it and it ran perfect. So I decided to do a fresh install of Kubuntu 10.04 and it worked great for a day or two, then this issue happens. I am able to log in tty and tried "sudo startx" in hope of getting my graphics back. I get the following errors "Fatal Server error No screens found" and "xinit no such file or directory (errno 2)" and unable to connect to server..
What are the differences between "su -" in a GUI terminal and directly logging in as root in a text mode terminal (tty1-tty6)? Any environment, path or other functionality differences?
New clean install of Fedora 12 (my worst Linux experience so far, should have sticked with Fedora 9, it was old but it was stable, unlike this half-backed... whatever it is). Anyway, to the matter at hand (one of the many):How do I switch to the console from the graphical login screen? CTRL+ALT+Fn doesn't work, CTRL+ALT+Backspace doesn't kill X, it's a NIS machine with only root as local account
I edited the passwd file to modify the default shell for root from bash to tcshnow when I try to login to root it gives me the following error:"su: /bin/tcsh : No such file or directory"
I am new to Fedora. I just put it on my H.P AMD Quad core machine. I have eight gigs of ram and plenty of storage. I loaded it into Microsoft Virtual PC, and it boots fine and seems to work ok in tty1. I am a cit student at a community college and seem to get little to no support from my teacher who is teaching a beginning course on Linux. He told me to ask here. When I use ctrl-alt-f2 or f3-f4 and so on all the way up the levels, I got green lines across the screen, as if the graphics card is not working. I have 23 inch monitor and a Nvidia 9500 GT ddr3 512mb graphics card that I installed after I bought the computer. My host operating system is Windows 7 , and is working fine. I am now two weeks behind on labs for this class and getting nervous, I need to be able to go to tty2 to do these labs.
I wanted to disable root logins in console, so I searched for that. I found that if I change root's bash to "/sbin/nologin" in "/etc/passwd", root user will not be able to login. So I did that. But when I wanted to use sudo command, it didn't show me root bash, but it only do the same thing as logging in as root in single user mode (shows message that this account is disabled). So, how I can disable root logins, but keep enabled sudo command for standard users?
I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared). Why is this happening? Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).
I am trying to get fedora-ds running on a machine. I can't log onto the console at all. If I use the command line below the log shows multiple instances on the following lines. fedora-idm-console -D 9 -x nologo
After the Upgrade of my Fedora Insatallation (FC 10 => 12) I have some problems with Gnome and the Login via console. The system actually boots fine and all kind of services like Postfix, IMAP, Samba, SSHD, Apache, etc. are avialable normally.
If I try however to work directly on the server I only see the completed Fedora progress icon and not as hoped for, the Login to Gnome. Also the attempt to change to a plain console with ALT-CTRL-F1 fails.
Since actually everything seems to work quite fine, I am somewhat helpless, according to should I look for, to get Gnome and the Console Login working again.
I have a need to start an application on bootup on the linux console and I do not have a need for any type of login or security. I do not need any ALT-F1,F2,etc virtual consoles but I would like to allow SSH access via the network port for debugging, loading, etc.
The application is a SDL graphics program running with fbcon as the SDL_VIDEODRIVER if that matters. I'm currently using Fedora 10 and 12 but any distro that supports SDL using the fbcon framebuffer would be acceptable.
How to enable Root login...i cant copy or move something on the HDD...I have administrator rights and password for root but i cant change permissions for the HDD without login on root and root login are not allowed .
I don't what happened but yesterday I was working normally and then I shutdown the computer, today when I opened ubuntu it took me to tyy1 login screen, I entered my username and password then it took me to the normal login screen with the login drums sound and it wrote on my account (logged in) so I clicked it and I entered my password again and then I got to my ubuntu so what went wrong and how to fix it also I noticed that a new terminal in system tools occurred called Kernel (I didn't add it)
I'm using ubuntu 10.10 on Dell inspiron 1520 with Nvidia 8600GT and 3GB RAM
Important: this happened after update to generic-headers-24
I am not able to login to server from console attached to server, every time i enter username & password but it again asks for username & password. But when i try to login to server from remote machine, login happens properly.
I just installed 10.04, and its taking me to the console login, rather than the graphical login. When I tried the live cd, the graphical environment was good. But after installation, I dont get the graphical login , so that I can get into the desktop.
I have a ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 card on ThinkPad T60. Everything was working on 8.10, and I decided to install 10.04 and now it doesnt work.
I notice that by default KDM lets you login as root, yet on GDM is disable. How can I enable GDM to let me login as root, and how to I disable the feature on KDM?
Just downloaded and installed 14.I have downloaded XAMPP as a user and extracted it to the desktop. Now I need to move it to the opt folder and I cannot do that - insufficient permission. When I try to switch user to root it does not accept the password even though I know I am using the correct pw because I can bring up terminal, do su, enter the pw and get terminal access. How do I log in as root or how do I move the folder to opt as a general user?
I'm using fedora 12 along with Windows XP the problem is I'm unable to login as root but I'm able to authenticate with the same password as another user.
Can we log into the gui login screen with root under Fedora 12 because I keep getting an Authentication Failure even when I change the password to a simple password named password? I can login under root in the terminal and when ever it requests the root password in a regular user account.
I am running Fedora 14 and can set my box for SSH after I login as root.
My question is I can script this process but how would I enable the root in the script? Also is there any way I can configure this in the OS where when the machine boots up I can log in remote so SSH will always be on.
I am running a Linux box an would like it to act as a server but keep in mind that it wont always be on and I only use it for educational purposes.
Well I did something pretty stupid and now I can't log in with my user other than the root user. Basically, I wanted to change my username and so I when to the admin > user & accounts - and selected the account I wanted to change. Anyway I did that and then logged out. Since then all I get when I reseted is a spinning mouse ball and a black screen. I can get into the shell prompt - but I'm not sure how I'd go about fixing this issue I created. At the moment I'm logged in the shell with root, and if I type 'id' I can see my old username, but I think the links behind it are broken.
i have a few questions 1)Is it possible for the Root to have auto login? 2)If yes please could any one Guide me.
3)If Not, i want to use /(slash)("root@localhost" instead of "user@localhost") directory directly with out entering the root password in the created user.
I am using rhel 5.3. I am using windows 2003 server 32-bit (the processor is 64 bit. AMD athlon x2). I have installed vmware and installed rhel5.3 64 bit on top of it. Now i am able to login as root from GUI mode (f7 console), but unable to login in text console from f1 to f6. I checked the /etc/securetty. But there was nothing unusual there. I think udev is causing this problem, since google said so. I cant find where the udev.rules file is located that google searches are taking about. How do i enable root login in f1-6 console.
